Abstract
Mono-alkene-inserted [n]cycloparaphenylenes 1 [(ene)-[n]CPP] with n=6, 8, and 10, mono-ortho-phenylene-inserted [6]CPP 2, and di-alkene-insertved [n]CPP 3 [(ene)2 -[n]CPP] with n=4, 6, and 8 were synthesized by fusing CPP precursors and alkene or ortho- phenylene groups through coupling reactions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that the strips formed by the π-surfaces of 1 and 2 exhibited a Möbius topology in the solid state. While the Möbius topology in the parent 1 and 2 in solution was lost due to the free rotation of the paraphenylene unit even at low temperatures, ene-[6]CPP 4 with eight 1-pyrrolyl groups preserved the Möbius topology even in solution. Despite a twist, 1 has in-plane conjugation and possesses a unique size dependence of the electronic properties: namely, the opposite size dependency of the HOMO-LUMO energy relative to conventional π-conjugated molecules.

Abstract
Global aromaticity in 3D π-conjugated molecular cages remains largely unexplored. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a fully conjugated molecular cage ( 1 ) containing two bridged triphenylamine units and three quinoidal bithiophene arms. X-ray crystallographic analysis, NMR/ESR measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that: ( 1 ) its dication ( 1 2+ ) has an open-shell singlet ground state and is 3D globally aromatic, with individual macrocycles being 2D Hückel aromatic; (2) its tetracation ( 1 4+ ) has a triplet ground state and is also 3D globally aromatic, with individual macrocycles being 2D Baird aromatic; and (3) its hexacation ( 1 6+ ) has a closed-shell nature and shows local aromaticity. The study revealed a close relationship between 2D Hückel/Baird aromaticity and 3D global π-aromaticity.

Abstract
3,7,23,27-Tetrabromo[36]octaphyrin 2 was synthesized as a novel octaphyrin bearing two meso-free positions. Surprisingly, its ZnII and NiII complexation reactions produced a directly fused porphyrin(2.1.1.1) dimer 6, and a meso-α fused N-confused porphyrin (NCP) dimer 7, as the first example of NCP tape, respectively, via transannular C-C bond formation. While 6 exhibits a diatropic ring-current effect owing to the global 36π Möbius aromaticity, 7 shows a paratropic ring-current effect due to the global Hückel 36π antiaromaticity. In addition, the oxidation of 7 with PbO2 allowed for formation of its two-electron oxidized species 9 that exhibited a diatropic ring-current effect due to the global Hückel 34π aromaticity. This work has demonstrated that meso-free large expanded porphyrins can be a promising platform to produce novel fused porphyrinoids.

Abstract
By their conformational flexibility, Möbius aromatic hexaphyrins provide a dynamic chirality attractive to develop stimuli responsive systems such as chiroptical switches. A regular [28]hexaphyrin has been equipped with a chiral coordinating arm to achieve transfer of chirality from a fix stereogenic element to the dynamic Möbius one. The arm allows straightforward formation of labile monometallic ZnII complexes with an exogenous ligand, either a carboxylato or an amino with opposite inwards/outwards orientations relative to the Möbius ring. As a corollary, the chiral coordinating arm is constrained over the ring or laterally, inducing opposite P and M Möbius configurations with unprecedented high stereoselectivity (diast. excess greater than 95 %). By tuning the transfer of chirality, these achiral effectors generate electronic circular dichroism spectra with bisignate Cotton effect of opposite signs. Switching between distinct chiroptical states was ultimately achieved in mild conditions owing to ligand exchange, with high robustness (10 cycles).

Abstract
Four examples of stable nonaromatic pyridine containing heteroheptaphyrins (pyrithiaheptaphyrins) 2-5 were synthesized in 8-13% yields by [5+2] condensation of newly synthesized pyridine-based pentapyrrane 8 and bithiophene diol 9 a-d. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of macrocycle 2 proved that the macrocycle assumes a highly planar structure with two inverted thiophene rings. The heteroheptaphyrins 2-5 are asymmetric and showed a greater number of resonances in 1 H NMR spectra compared to our previously reported symmetric heterohexaphyrin (pyrithiahexaphyrin) 1 c. Most of the macrocyclic core protons in pyrithiahepaphyrins 2-5 experienced upfield/downfield shifts compared to pyrithiahexaphyrin 1 c indicating the alteration of π-conjugation in the macrocycles. The absorption bands were significantly red-shifted and located in the NIR region in macrocycles 2-5 compared to 1 c supporting the increase of π-delocalization. The theoretical studies support the experimental findings and NICS(0) value supports the non-aromaticity of the macrocycles.

Abstract
Di-2,7-naphthihexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1), a non-aromatic carba-analogue of the hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1), incorporating two built-in 2,7-naphthylene moieties was synthesized as two separate, conformationally locked stereoisomers. Both conformers followed complex protonation pathways involving structurally different species, which can be targeted under kinetic and thermodynamic control. The neutralization of the ultimate dicationic product, accessible from both stereoisomers of the free base, allowed to realize the complex conformational switching cycle involving six structurally different species.

Abstract
Diphenanthrioctaphyrin(1.1.1.0.1.1.1.0), an expanded carbaporphyrinoid incorporating two phenanthrenylene moieties, exists as two separate, yet interconvertible, locked stereoisomers. These species demonstrate complex dynamic behavior upon protonation, consisting in multiple conformational rearrangements and anion-binding events. The formation of one of the final dicationic forms is accompanied by the inclusion of a complex anion(s) within the macrocyclic cavity yielding a pseudorotaxane-like host-guest complex. Protonation with trifluoroacetic or dichloroacetic acids followed by neutralization afforded a conformation-switching cycle, which involves six structurally different species. Analogous acidification with chiral 10-camphorsulfonic acid and subsequent neutralization generated one of the free base stereoisomers with enantiomeric excess. Therefore, it was shown that the simple acid-base chemistry of diphenanthrioctaphyrin can act as stimulus, inducing chirality into the system, allowing for the manipulation of the stereochemical information imprinted into the enantiomers of the macrocycle.

Abstract
Highly twisted structures of expanded porphyrin provide a prominent basis to unravel the relationship between aromaticity and chirality. Here we report the synthesis of bis-Ge(IV) complexes of [38]octaphyrin that display rigid figure-eight structures. Two bis-Ge(IV) [38]octaphyrin isomers with respect to the stereochemistry of the axial hydroxy groups on the germanium ions were obtained and found to be aromatic. Upon oxidation with MnO2 , these [38]octaphyrin complexes were converted to a single syn-type isomer of [36]octaphyrin with retained figure-eight conformation. The enantiomers have been successfully separated by HPLC equipped with a chiral stationary phase. While aromatic [38]octaphyrin Ge(IV) complexes showed quite large molar circular dichroism of up to Δϵ=1500 M-1 cm-1 with a dissymmetry factor gabs of 0.035, weakly antiaromatic [36]octaphyrin Ge(IV) complexes underscored moderate values; Δϵ=540 M-1 cm-1 with gabs of 0.023. Thus, the figure-eight octaphyrin scaffold has been proved to be an attractive platform for novel chiroptical materials with tunable aromaticity.

Abstract
An [18]thiaporphyrin[36]dithiaoctaphyrin-[18]thiaporphyrin tricyclic macrocycle, fused through the 2,5-thienylene bridging moiety, was isolated during the preparation of 2,5-thienylene-strapped [26]hexaphyrin containing o-dichlorophenyl groups as meso substituents. The spectroscopic data of the 2,5-thienylene-strapped [26]hexaphyrin verified contributions of aromaticity from ring currents of both the [18]thiaporphyrin and the [26]hexaphyrin. The crystal structure of the tricyclic macrocycle revealed a distorted [36]dithiaoctaphyrin central core with two [18]thiaporphyrin sidewheels oriented nearly perpendicular to the mean-plane of dithiaoctaphyrin, implying the existence of independent π-conjugated systems. Both the absorption maximum at 441 nm and the chemical shifts in the 1 H NMR spectrum of the tricyclic macrocycle are dominated by diatropic ring currents of two aromatic [18]thiaporphyrin sidewheels.

Abstract
We report expanded porphyrins with pyridine rings and two neighboring carbonyl groups, which allow NiII ions to coordinate to the tripyrrinone-type NNNO coordination structure with Ni-O bonds. The selectivity of tripyrrinone is superior to other pyrrolic or pyridinic cavities of expanded porphyrins. Introduction of α-carbonyl pyridine next to the tripyrrolic conjugated structure is a powerful strategy for regioselective metalation of flexible expanded porphyrinoids.

Abstract
Three distinct conformational structures of carbaoctaphyrins were prepared by incorporating bis-4,4'-biphenyl units in the macrocyclic core. The free-base form adopts a figure-eight conformation, whereas the protonation triggers a conformational change with a pyrrole ring inversion and acquires an open-framework structure. The insertion of bis-RhI metal ion in the macrocyclic core affords a singly twisted conformational structure. Furthermore, the local aromaticity in the bis-4,4'-biphenyl ring dominates the overall macrocyclic aromaticity in all three forms, and thus adopts nonaromatic characteristics. These results are supported by spectral as well as theoretical studies, and they are unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystal analyses.

Abstract
Vinylene-bridged hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) was synthesized from dipyrrolyl diphenylethenes by acid-catalyzed condensation reactions. Freebase hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) forms a distorted structure with non-aromatic characteristics. The aromaticity and molecular configuration of non-planar hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) can be controlled by insertion of metal ions. Freebase and zinc complexes show a distorted structure without macrocyclic aromaticity, whereas copper complexes show a figure-of-eight structure with macrocyclic aromaticity. It is the first example of aromaticity conversion of a distorted expanded porphyrin involving vinylene bridges.

Abstract
5,20-Bis(ethoxycarbonyl)-[28]hexaphyrin was synthesized by acid catalyzed cross-condensation of meso-diaryl-substituted tripyrrane and ethyl 2-oxoacetate followed by subsequent oxidation. This hexaphyrin was found to be a stable 28π-antiaromatic compound with a dumbbell-like conformation. Upon oxidization with PbO2 , this [28]hexaphyrin was converted into an aromatic [26]hexaphyrin with a rectangular shape bearing two ester groups at the edge side. The [28]hexaphyrin can incorporate two NiII or CuII metals by using the ester carbonyl groups and three pyrrolic nitrogen atoms to give bis-NiII and bis-CuII complexes with essentially the same dumbbell-like structure. The antiaromatic properties of the [28]hexaphyrin and its metal complexes have been well characterized.

Abstract
Syntheses of core-modified 24π pentaphyrin 7 and 20π homoporphyrin 8 are reported. The freebase form of 7 exhibits optical and 1 H NMR spectroscopic behavior corresponding to a 4nπ nonaromatic topology at 298 K. However, upon lowering the temperature to 188 K, 7 exhibits weak aromaticity because of a small conformational change. Protonation of the imine pyrrolic nitrogen atoms results in sharpening of the absorption band with more than 100 nm red shift and two-fold increase in ϵ values. The 1 H NMR spectra show large shielding and deshielding of specific protons accompanied by twisting of pyrrole and thiophene rings from the mean plane of the macrocycle. These observations suggest a major structural change upon protonation. The single-crystal X-ray structure of protonated 7 a reveals a severe twisting of the macrocycle, especially at the ethene bridge, and the two thiophene rings adjacent to the ethene bridge are pointed above and below the plane of the ethene bridge (49.07° and 49.08°). The nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) values calculated at the center of the macrocycle for the freebase and protonated derivatives of 7 a and 7 b are -5.6, -8.3 ppm and -5.3, -8.4 ppm, respectively. The anisotropy-induced current density (AICD) plots suggest a clockwise circulation of π electrons. Taken together, the changes occurring in the optical spectra, 1 H NMR spectra, single-crystal X-ray structure and NICS calculation reflect a Möbius aromatic topology for protonated 7. However, the homoporphyrin 8 remains nonaromatic both in the freebase and protonated form.

Abstract
The structurally prearranged carbaporphyrins 22-methyl- and 22-ethyl-m-benziporphyrins provide the platform stabilizing aromatic rhodium(III) 22-(μ-methylene-m-benziporphyrin) and rhodium(III) 22-(μ-ethylidene-m-benziporphyrin). An intramolecular conversion facilitated by the m-phenylene reactivity and observed for both aromatic complexes efficiently leads to rhodium(III) 21-(μ-methylene)-21-carbaporphyrin and rhodium(III) 21-(μ-ethylidene)-21-carbaporphyrin. The distinctive macrocyclic environment of rhodium(III) 21-carbaporphyrin created an opportunity to trap unique organometallic transformations of inner core substituents affording the fulvene-like bond pattern or the rearrangement to 21-vinyl substituent. The one-electron reduction of the rhodium(III) carbaporphyrin anion π-radical with a (dxy )2 (dxz )2 (dyz )2 -(P.- ) electronic configuration is demonstrated. The further process of reduction of paramagnetic species triggers the ethyl migration from carbon(22) to rhodium(III), affording the diamagnetic rhodium(III) meta-benziporphyrin containing the apically coordinated σ-ethyl ligand providing an example of reversible C(sp2 )-C(sp3 ) bond cleavage.

Abstract
An unstable conjugated homoporphyrin was successfully stabilized by introducing meso-aryl substitutents. It was evident from the moderate diatropic ring current found by NMR analysis that the newly formed 20π conjugated free base and its protonated form exhibited Möbius aromatic character. Furthermore, complexation as a ligand with an RhI ion afforded a unique binding mode and retained the Möbius aromaticity. Overall, these compounds are the smallest Möbius aromatic molecules, as confirmed by spectral and crystal-structure analysis and supported by theoretical studies.

Abstract
Five congeners of [n]cyclo-3,6-phenanthrenylene with 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 panels were obtained from one-pot macrocyclization of dibromophenanthrene, and their crystal structures with diverse molecular shapes were revealed by X-ray crystallography. The compounds, except the four-panel congener, were highly fluorescent in solution, with quantum yields up to 85 %. The least fluorescent four-panel congener showed the smallest change in its absorption spectrum from that of monomeric phenanthrene, which provided an interesting structure-activity relationship for fluorescent macrocycles to guide future studies.

Abstract
A rectangular 5,20-di(4-pyridyl) [26]hexaphyrin was reduced with NaBH4 to give the corresponding twisted Möbius aromatic [28]hexaphyrin. Subsequent double N-methylation gave a dicationic 5,20-di(N-methyl-4-pyridinium) [28]hexaphyrin, which was converted to a doubly zwitterionic and Hückel antiaromatic [28]hexaphyrin upon deprotonation with sodium methoxide.

Abstract
Large aza-analogues of curved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with a double-helicene structure present unique features for molecular photonics. We present the preparation and characterization of three such structures. The synthesis of these heterocyclic nanographenes involves only a few high-yield steps that use readily available starting materials. X-ray analysis revealed that each of these new dyes has three conformational isomers: one diastereoisomer in a meso form and two enantiomers in twisted forms [(P,P)] and [(M,M)]. The low energy barriers between the conformers, however, prevent their separation by using chiral HPLC, and the NMR spectra show only one set of signals for each of these curved compounds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations quantify the small energy difference and the small energy barriers between the chiral and meso forms, which fully supports the experimental results. Their optical absorption lacks any sensitivity to the solvent environment, whereas their fluorescence features exhibit pronounced solvatochromism. This rarely observed solvatofluorochromism of centrosymmetric molecules without either electron-withdrawing groups or -donating substituents was probed by using time-resolved spectroscopy. These studies suggest that, similar to 9,9'-bianthryl, the nonpolar locally excited state shows negligible solvatochromism, whereas the charge-transfer state is sensitive to solvent polarity.

Abstract
Herein, the Zimmerman Möbius/Hückel concept is extended to pericyclic reactions involving transition metals. While sigmatropic hydrogen shifts in parent hydrocarbons are either uniquely antarafacial or suprafacial, we have shown by theoretical orbital topology considerations and quantum chemical computations at DFT level that both modes of stereoselectivity must become allowed in the same system as a consequence of Craig-Möbius-type orbital arrays, in which a transition metal d orbital induces a phase dislocation in metallacycles. This may have fundamental implications for the understanding of reactivity and bonding in organometallic chemistry.

Abstract
A rectangular [28]hexaphyrin bearing outer straps at the long side has been synthesized by SN Ar reaction of [26]hexaphyrin with allyl alcohol, intramolecular olefin metathesis by using Hoveyda-Grubbs second-generation catalyst, and reduction with NaBH4 . The peripheral straps enforce a rectangular conformation for the [28]hexaphyrin, which shows Hückel antiaromatic character, as confirmed by its planar X-ray structure, a strong paratropic ring current, characteristic UV/Vis/NIR absorption features, small electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gap, and very fast S1 decay.
