Abstract
Heterobimetallic [BiRh] tetracarboxylate catalysts endowed with 1,3-disilylated phenylglycine paddlewheels benefit from interligand London dispersion. They were originally designed for asymmetric cyclopropanation but are now shown to perform very well in asymmetric C-H functionalization reactions too. Because of the confined ligand sphere about the derived donor/acceptor carbenes, insertions into unhindered methyl groups are kinetically favored, although methylene units also react with excellent levels of asymmetric induction; even gaseous ethane is a suitable substrate. Moreover, many functional groups in both partners are tolerated. The resulting products are synthetically equivalent to the outcome of traditional asymmetric ester alkylation, allylation, benzylation, propargylation and aldol reactions and therefore constitute a valuable nexus to more conventional chemical logic.

Abstract
Peripheral substitution of a π-extended porphyrin with bulky groups produces a curved chromophore with four helical stereogenic units. The curvature and stereochemistry of such porphyrins can be controlled by varying the substituents, coordinated metal ions, and apical ligands. In particular, when the achiral saddle-shaped free bases are treated with large metal ions, i.e., CdII or HgII , the resulting complexes convert to chiral propeller-like configurations. X-ray diffraction analyses show that apical coordination of a water molecule is sufficient to induce a notable bowl-like distortion of the cadmium complex, which however retains its chiral structure. For phenyl- and tolyl-substituted derivatives, the conversion is thermodynamically controlled, whereas complexes bearing bulky 4-(tert-butyl)phenyl groups transform into their chiral forms upon heating. In the latter case, the chiral Hg porphyrin was converted into the corresponding free base and other metal complexes without any loss of configurational purity, ultimately providing access to stable, enantiopure porphyrin propellers.

Abstract
High-valent iron-nitrido species are nitrogen analogues of iron-oxo species which are versatile reagents for C-H oxidation. Nonetheless, C-H activation by iron-nitrido species has been scarcely explored, as this is often hampered by their instability and short lifetime in solutions. Herein, the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactivity of an Fe porphyrin nitrido species (2 c) toward C-H substrates was studied in solutions at room temperature, which was achieved by nanosecond laser flash photolysis (LFP) of its FeIII -azido precursor (1 c) supported by a bulky bis-pocket porphyrin ligand. C-H bonds with bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) of up to ≈84 kcal mol-1 could be activated, and the second-order rate constants (k2 ) are on the order of 102 -104 s-1 m-1 . The Fe-amido product formed after HAT could further release ammonia upon protonation.

Abstract
We have established a method for the highly regio- and enantioselective functionalization of tert-butyl groups via intramolecular amide carbene insertion into C-H bonds, yielding γ-lactams with 91% ee in up to 99% yield. This reaction uses a ruthenium(II) phenyl oxazoline (Ru(II)-Pheox) complex. The catalytic intramolecular carbene transfer reaction to the primary C-H bond proceeds rapidly and selectively compared to that with secondary C-H, benzylic secondary C-H, tert-C-H, or sp2C-H bonds in the presence of 1 mol % Ru(II)-Pheox catalyst. This is the first example of a catalytic carbenoid insertion into an unactivated tert-butyl group with enantiocontrol at the carbenoid carbon.

Abstract
A rhodium(II)-catalyzed reaction of newly prepared 4-acyl-1-sulfonyl-1,2,3-triazoles with benzene, and its derivatives, is investigated. Acceptor/acceptor carbenoids generated from 4-acyltriazoles undergo selective insertion at aromatic C(sp2 )-H bonds in the presence of benzylic C(sp3 )-H bonds to produce N-sulfonylenaminones.

Abstract
A rhodium(II)- or copper(I)-catalyzed formal intramolecular carbene insertion into vinylic C(sp2 )-H bonds is reported herein. This method provides straightforward access to 1H-indenes with high efficiency and excellent functional-group compatibility. Mechanistically, the reaction is proposed to involve the following sequence: metal carbene formation, intramolecular nucleophilic addition of the double bond to the electron-deficient carbene carbon atom, dearomatization, and finally a 1,5-H shift.

Abstract
Recent experimental reports of heme carbene C-H insertions show promising results for sustainable chemistry due to good yield and selectivity, low cost of iron, and low/no toxicity of hemes. But mechanistic details are mostly unknown. Despite structural similarity and isoelectronic nature between heme carbene and the FeIV =O intermediate, our quantum chemical studies with detailed geometric and electronic information for the first time reveal an FeII -based, concerted, hydride-transfer mechanism, which is different from the FeIV -based stepwise hydrogen atom transfer mechanism for C-H functionalization by native heme enzymes. A trend of broad range experimental C-H insertion yields (0-88 %) of five different C-H bonds, including mostly non-functionalized moieties, was well reproduced. Results suggest that the substrate selectivity originates from the hydride formation capability. The predicted kinetic isotope effects were also in excellent agreement with experiment. Useful geometry, charge, and energy parameters well correlated with barriers were reported. These results provide the first theoretical evidence that carbene formation is the overall rate-limiting step, and suggest a key role of the formation of strong electrophilic heme carbene in developing heme-based C-H insertion catalysts and biocatalysts.

Abstract
A protocol on chemoselective cobalt(II) porphyrin-catalyzed intramolecular cyclopropanation of N-alkyl indoles/pyrroles with alkylcarbenes has been developed. The reaction enables the rapid construction of a range of nitrogen-containing polycyclic compounds in moderate to high yields from readily accessible materials. These N-containing polycyclic compounds can be converted into a variety of N-heterocycles with potential synthetic and biological interest. Compared to their N-tosylhydrazone counterparts, the use of bulky N-2,4,6-triisopropylbenzenesulfonyl hydrazones as carbene precursors allows cyclopropanation to occur under milder reaction conditions.

Abstract
Iron porphyrin carbenes (IPCs) are thought to be intermediates involved in the metabolism of various xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, as well as in chemical reactions catalyzed by metalloporphyrins and engineered P450s. While early work proposed IPCs to contain Fe(II), more recent work invokes a double-bond description of the iron-carbon bond, similar to that found in Fe(IV) porphyrin oxenes. Reported herein is the first quantum chemical investigation of IPC Mössbauer and NMR spectroscopic properties, as well as their electronic structures, together with comparisons to ferrous heme proteins and an Fe(IV) oxene model. The results provide the first accurate predictions of the experimental spectroscopic observables as well as the first theoretical explanation of their electrophilic nature, as deduced from experiment. The preferred resonance structure is Fe(II)←{:C(X)Y}(0) and not Fe(IV)={C(X)Y}(2-), a result that will facilitate research on IPC reactivities in various chemical and biochemical systems.

Abstract
Diastereoselectivity in control The combined C—H functionalization/Cope rearrangement (CHCR) is a highly diastereoselective process that typically proceeds through a chair transition state. A recent computational study of a model system for the CHCR reaction revealed that a boat transition state was only slightly less favored than a chair transition state. Guided by these computational results, this study describes the design of substrates that would react by means of a boat transition state. The resulting C—H functionalization products are the opposite diastereomeric series to what had been previously obtained with this chemistry.
