Abstract
In SERS analysis, the specificity of molecular fingerprints is combined with potential single-molecule sensitivity so that is an attractive tool to detect molecules in trace amounts. Although several substrates have been widely used from early on, there are still some problems such as the difficulties to bind some molecules to the substrate. With the development of nanotechnology, an increasing interest has been focused on plasmonic metal nanoparticles hybridized with (2D) nanomaterials due to their unique properties. More frequently, the excellent properties of the hybrids compounds have been used to improve the drawbacks of the SERS platforms in order to create a system with outstanding properties. In this review, the physics and working principles of SERS will be provided along with the properties of differently shaped metal nanoparticles. After that, an overview on how the hybrid compounds can be engineered to obtain the SERS platform with unique properties will be given.

Abstract
Design and application of stimulus-responsive microgels is still in its infancy but is an exhilarating topic in controllable sensing device. Here, we have fabricated a dual-responsive platform capable of both sensitive on-spot fluorescence analysis and reliable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) quantification of water and temperature by in-situ encapsulating 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB), meso-formyl-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl pyrromethene fluoroborate (FPF) probe and Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microgels. The smart microgels exhibit ultra-sensitive (detection limit 10-4% v/v) and reversible response towards water due to the liner relationship between network volume and SERS performance of the microgels. Furthermore, the presence of water triggers the conversion of FPF to aldehyde hydrate, facilitating visual assay of trace water in matrix samples through the enhanced fluorescence signals. Interestingly, the SERS signals can be precisely tuned by the thermo-sensitive microgels substrate, thus achieving the temperature monitoring from 32 to 50 °C. The microgels-based sensor has fast-response (2 min), excellent stability, and enables accurate and reliable response of water in organic solvent and pharmaceutical products. As a smart and flexible sensor, the hybrid microgels will facilitate the field of POC analysis, as well as molecular recognition in the future.

Abstract
The dependence of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of noble-metal nanomaterials on refractive index makes LSPR a useful, label-free signal transduction strategy for biosensing. In particular, by decorating gold nanomaterials with molecular recognition agents, analytes of interest can be trapped near the surface, resulting in an increased refractive index surrounding the nanomaterial, and, consequently, a red shift in the LSPR wavelength. Ionic poly( N-isopropylacrylamide- co-methacrylic acid) (PNM) hydrogels were used as protein receptors because PNM nanogels exhibit a large increase in refractive index upon protein binding. Specifically, PNM hydrogels were synthesized on the surface of silica gold nanoshells (AuNSs). This composite material (AuNS@PNM) was used to detect changes in the concentration of two protein biomarkers of chronic dry eye: lysozyme and lactoferrin. Both of these proteins have high isoelectric points, resulting in electrostatic attraction between the negatively charged PNM hydrogels and positively charged proteins. Upon binding lysozyme or lactoferrin, AuNS@PNM exhibits large, concentration-dependent red shifts in LSPR wavelength, which enabled the detection of clinically relevant concentration changes of both biomarkers in human tears. The LSPR-based biosensor described herein has potential utility as an affordable screening tool for chronic dry eye and associated conditions.

Abstract
Feature film: Thin films made by exponential layer-by-layer growth display high diffusivity and can be readily infiltrated with inorganic nanoparticles. They can sequestrate molecular systems from solution as a function of the composition of their layers, while providing intense surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signals (see picture).
