Enhancement of Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence and Radical Stability by Peripheral Multidonors on Alkynylpyrene Derivatives

One-Pot Synthesis of Pyreno[2,1-b]furan Molecules with Two-Photon Absorption Properties

The development of large π-conjugated polycyclic heteroaromatic materials is of immense interest, both in the academic as well as the industrial community. Herein, we present the efficient one-pot synthesis of novel pyreno[2,1-b]furan molecules from a newly designed intermediate, which display intense green emission (505-516 nm) in solution and a large red shift emission (625-640 nm) in the solid state, because of strong π-π stacking. More interestingly, the compounds exhibit novel two-photon absorption (TPA) properties, and the TPA cross-section (δ) value was increased to 533 GM by regulating the electronic effects of the substituents of the pyreno[2,1-b]furan molecules. This study not only offers a facile strategy for constructing new pyrene-fused luminescence materials with two-photon absorption properties but also provides a new chemical intermediate that opens up a new pathway to advanced materials.

Highly Conducting and Flexible Radical Crystals

Together with high conductivity, high flexibility is an important property required for next generation organic electronic components. Both properties are difficult to achieve together especially when the components are crystalline because of the intrinsic high brittleness of organic molecular crystals. We report an organic radical crystal system that has both high flexibility and high conductivity. The crystal consists of 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene radical cation (BPEA^.+ ) units, and shows flexibility under pressure with high conductivity in ambient condition exhibiting average conductivity of 2.68 S cm^-1 when normal linear shape, as well as 2.43 S cm^-1 when bent. The structural analysis reveals that both a short π-π distance (3.290 Å) between BPEA^.+ units that are aligned along the crystal length direction, and the presence of PF₆ ^- counter ions induce flexibility and high electrical conductivity.

Photophysics, Electrochemistry and Efficient Electrochemiluminescence of Trigonal Truxene-Core Dyes

We synthesized and characterized a series of dyes built from a spirofluorene or truxene core. The quadrupolar spirofluorene system is the initial building unit for the design and preparation of more complex star-shaped dyes consisting of a truxene core bearing three di- or triphenylamine moieties with or without a thiophene connector. Their photophysical, electrochemical, and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) properties were first investigated in solution. Structure/activity relationships were derived and rationalized by comparing the quadrupolar system and trigonal truxene-core derivatives using computational studies. The photophysical and redox characteristics are drastically tuned by the introduction of a thiophene bridge and electron-donor substituents at their terminal branches. These comparative studies show the essential role of the stability of both radical cations and anions to obtain efficient ECL dyes. The stabilization of the radicals is directly related to the charge delocalization due to the π-conjugation by the thiophene bridge. The brightest ECL is achieved by annihilation and coreactant (benzoyl peroxide) pathways with the blue-emitting truxene dye, which is 2- and 4.5-times greater than that of the quadrupolar compound and reference [Ru(bpy)₃ ]²⁺ emitter, respectively. Such an extensive study on these extended π-conjugated molecules presenting different core structures may guide the design and synthesis of new ECL dyes with a strong efficiency.

Heli(aza)cene: A Helical Molecular Tweezer with Tunable Intra- and Intermolecular Charge Transfer

Non-planar fluorophores offer unique avenues of intra- and intermolecular energy transfer not available in their planar counterparts. We have rationally designed a molecular tweezer based on the pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide framework having two structurally similar arms with extended π-surface. We termed this molecular tweezer as Heli(aza)cene (HAC) due to its spontaneous adoption of helical conformation stabilized by the amide and imine moieties present in it. In the helical conformation, the two arms of HAC are twisted unequally. This asymmetry confers dissimilar electronic character to the two arms and results in intramolecular charge transfer interactions in HAC. Homochiral stacking of the P- and the M- helices in crystal, and profound redshifting of the emission at higher concentrations of HAC was attributed to intermolecular charge-transfer interactions in aggregated/crystal state. Exposure of HAC, in solution as well as in the solid state, to Lewis/Brønsted acids results in rapid and vibrant color changes. This is the first example of a π-layered helical molecule exhibiting tunable intra-/intermolecular charge-transfer characteristics.
