Abstract
A new reaction mode of palladium/norbornene (Pd/NBE) cooperative catalysis is reported involving the selective coupling of two different carbon-based electrophiles for vicinal double C-H functionalization of five-membered heteroarenes in a site-selective and redox-neutral manner. The key is to use alkynyl bromides as the second electrophile, which allows vicinal difunctionalization of a wide range of heteroarenes including pyrroles, thiophenes and furans at their C4 and C5 positions. One- or two-step tetrafunctionalizations of simple pyrrole and thiophene have also been realized. The C2-substituted NBEs prove most effective in these reactions, and the mechanistic exploration discloses the origin of the high selectivity of this transformation. Synthetic utility of this method has been exemplified in the concise preparations of thiophene-containing organic materials and a protein kinase inhibitor analogue. Preliminary success has also been achieved in a direct annulation event, using a tethered ketone as the second electrophile.

Abstract
We report herein a radical-mediated amination of cyclopropenes. The transformation proceeds through a cleavage of the three-membered ring after the addition of an azide radical on the strained double bond and leads to tetrasubstituted alkenyl nitrile derivatives upon loss of N2 . With 1,2-diaryl substituted cyclopropenes, this methodology could be extended to a one-pot synthesis of highly functionalized polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). This transformation allows the synthesis of nitrile-substituted alkenes and aromatic compounds from rapidly accessed cyclopropenes using only commercially available reagents.

Abstract
Herein, we report a novel catalytic synthesis of substituted 9H-fluoren-9-ols starting from aryl iodides and secondary ortho-bromobenzyl alcohols in the presence of palladium/norbornene as a catalytic system. The present protocol exhibits high functional group tolerance, mild reaction conditions and moderate to good yields. This transformation is based on two sequential pathways: (i) Pd(ii)-mediated oxidation of the secondary alcohol to the corresponding ketone and (ii) Pd(0)/norbornene-catalyzed reaction of the in situ generated ortho-bromoacetophenone with the aryl iodide.

Abstract
To show the synthetic utility of palladium/norbornene (Pd/NBE) cooperative catalysis, here we report concise syntheses of indenone-based natural products, pauciflorol F and acredinone A, which are enabled by direct annulation between aryl iodides and unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydrides. Compared to the previous indenone-preparation approaches, this method allows simple aryl iodides to be used as substrates with complete control of the regioselectivity. The total synthesis of acredinone A features two different Pd/NBE-catalyzed ortho acylation reactions for constructing penta-substituted arene cores, including the development of a new ortho acylation/ipso borylation.

Abstract
Herein we report a direct annulation between aryl iodides and epoxides through palladium/norbornene (Pd/NBE) cooperative catalysis. An iso-propyl ester substituted NBE was found to be most efficient to suppress the formation of multiple-NBE-insertion byproducts and affords the desired 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives in 44-99 % yields. The reaction is scalable and tolerates a range of functional groups. Asymmetric synthesis is realized using an enantiopure epoxide. Application of this method into a concise synthesis of insecticide fufenozide is demonstrated.

Abstract
Starting from γ-ketoesters with an o-iodobenzyl group we studied a palladium-catalyzed cyclization process that stereoselectively led to bi- and tricyclic compounds in moderate to excellent yields. Four X-ray crystal structure analyses unequivocally defined the structure of crucial cyclization products. The relative configuration of the precursor compounds is essentially transferred to that of the products and the formed hydroxy group in the newly generated cyclohexane ring is consistently in trans-arrangement with respect to the methoxycarbonyl group. A transition-state model is proposed to explain the observed stereochemical outcome. This palladium-catalyzed Barbier-type reaction requires a reduction of palladium(II) back to palladium(0) which is apparently achieved by the present triethylamine.

Abstract
A convenient and highly efficient synthesis of indenamines has been developed via ruthenium-catalyzed [3+2] carbocyclization under very mild conditions. A catalyst system of Ru(II) π-allyl precursor and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand promotes facile coupling between aromatic N–H ketimines with internal alkynes at mild temperatures, without added oxidants or other metal salts, and in non-polar solvents. A proposed mechanism involves imine-directed activation of aromatic C–H bond, alkyne insertion, and carbocyclization by intramolecular imine insertion into Ru–alkenyl linkages.
