A Dynamic Thermodynamic Resolution Strategy for the Stereocontrolled Synthesis of Streptonigrin

We report that axially chiral biaryl boronic esters can be generated with control of atroposelectivity by a Binol-mediated dynamic thermodynamic resolution process. These intermediates can be progressed to enantioenriched products through stereoretentive functionalization of the carbon-boron bond. Finally, we have exploited this method in the first highly stereoselective total synthesis of P-streptonigrin.

Advances of Sulfenate Anions in Catalytic Asymmetric Synthesis of Sulfoxides

In recent years, sulfenate anions as key intermediates in enantioselective synthesis have attracted considerable attention. Typically, development of novel synthetic methods to generate sulfenate anions allows for the preparation of various enantiopure sulfoxides, which are prevalently used as auxiliaries, ligands, organocatalysts, and biologically active compounds. This review presents the in situ preparation methods and the recent applications of sulfenate anions in catalytic asymmetric synthesis of chiral sulfoxides.

Atropisomerism in Diarylamines: Structural Requirements and Mechanisms of Conformational Interconversion

In common with other hindered structures containing two aromatic rings linked by a short tether, diarylamines may exhibit atropisomerism (chirality due to restricted rotation). Previous examples have principally been tertiary amines, especially those with cyclic scaffolds. Little is known of the structural requirement for atropisomerism in structurally simpler secondary and acyclic diarylamines. In this paper we describe a systematic study of a series of acyclic secondary diarylamines, and we quantify the degree of steric hindrance in the ortho positions that is required for atropisomerism to result. Through a detailed experimental and computational analysis, the role of each ortho-substituent on the mechanism and rate of conformational interconversion is rationalised. We also present a simple predictive model for the design of configurationally stable secondary diarylamines.

Control of the helical chirality of enantiopure sulfinyl (Z)-azobenzene-based photoswitches

A new class of enantiopure ortho,ortho-disubstituted azobenzene photoswitches has been synthesized from (S)-2-(p-tolylsulfinyl)benzoquinone and arylhydrazines. The sulfoxide acts as a unidirectional controller of the helical chirality that arises in the Z isomer after photoisomerization. Highly congested E-azobenzenes 5 c showed two atropisomeric diastereoconformers in the solid state that converged upon irradiation into a unique Z isomer with defined helicity (M), as evident in the X-ray structure. The chiroptical properties of this three-state enantiopure switch can be externally tuned both photochemically and/or thermally. Theoretical CD spectra calculated by using time-dependent DFT methods support the existence of two atropoisomeric E isomers and only one Z isomer with (M) helicity. Complementary to the classical azobenzene-based switches, the photoswiching event is promoted under green/blue light and do not occur under UV irradiation.
