Design of Microstructure-Engineered Polymers for Energy and Environmental Conservation

With the ever-growing demand for sustainability, designing polymeric materials using readily accessible feedstocks provides potential solutions to address the challenges in energy and environmental conservation. Complementing the prevailing strategy of varying chemical composition, engineering microstructures of polymer chains by precisely controlling their chain length distribution, main chain regio-/stereoregularity, monomer or segment sequence, and architecture creates a powerful toolbox to rapidly access diversified material properties. In this Perspective, we lay out recent advances in utilizing appropriately designed polymers in a wide range of applications such as plastic recycling, water purification, and solar energy storage and conversion. With decoupled structural parameters, these studies have established various microstructure-function relationships. Given the progress outlined here, we envision that the microstructure-engineering strategy will accelerate the design and optimization of polymeric materials to meet sustainability criteria.

Protein-Templated Reactions Using DNA-Antibody Conjugates

DNA-templated chemical reactions have found wide applications in drug discovery, programmed multistep synthesis, nucleic acid detection, and targeted drug delivery. The control of these reactions has, however, been limited to nucleic acid hybridization as a means to direct the proximity between reactants. In this work a system capable of translating protein-protein binding events into a DNA-templated reaction which leads to the covalent formation of a product is introduced. Protein-templated reactions by employing two DNA-antibody conjugates that are both able to recognize the same target protein and to colocalize a pair of reactant DNA strands able to undergo a click reaction are achieved. Two individual systems, each responsive to human serum albumin (HSA) and human IgG, are engineered and it is demonstrated that, while no reaction occurs in the absence of proteins, both protein-templated reactions can occur simultaneously in the same solution without any inter-system crosstalk.

Lewis Acids Activated Spontaneous Alternating Copolymerization of Maleic Anhydride and Styrene Derivatives

Synthesis of maleic anhydride (MA) and styrene (St) copolymers possessing ultra-high molecular weight, strictly alternating regularity and high glass transition temperature simultaneously is still an issure with great challenge. Herein, the spontaneous alternating copolymerization of MA and St derivatives were investigated by using various Lewis acids. In the presence of alkyl aluminum or butyl magnesium, the MA-St alternating copolymers with ultra-high molecular weight (M_n ≤166.5×10⁴ ) and high glass transition temperature (211 °C≤T_g ≤216 °C) were produced and the microstructure of MA-St copolymers were analyzed by ¹ H and ¹³ C NMR spectra. The copolymerizations of MA with St derivatives, including divinylbenzene, p-butenyl styrene, p-methoxystyrene, trans-anethole, p-fluorostyrene and p-chlorostyrene, also were explored by using AlOctyl₃ as an activator in toluene at 50 °C.

Shear Stress-Responsive Polymersome Nanoreactors Inspired by the Marine Bioluminescence of Dinoflagellates

Some marine plankton called dinoflagellates emit light in response to the movement of surrounding water, resulting in a phenomenon called milky seas or sea sparkle. The underlying concept, a shear-stress induced permeabilisation of biocatalytic reaction compartments, is transferred to polymer-based nanoreactors. Amphiphilic block copolymers that carry nucleobases in their hydrophobic block are self-assembled into polymersomes. The membrane of the vesicles can be transiently switched between an impermeable and a semipermeable state by shear forces occurring in flow or during turbulent mixing of polymersome dispersions. Nucleobase pairs in the hydrophobic leaflet separate when mechanical force is applied, exposing their hydrogen bonding motifs and therefore making the membrane less hydrophobic and more permeable for water soluble compounds. This polarity switch is used to release payload of the polymersomes on demand, and to activate biocatalytic reactions in the interior of the polymersomes.

From Interaction to Function in DNA-Templated Supramolecular Self-Assemblies

DNA-templated self-assembly represents a rich and growing subset of supramolecular chemistry where functional self-assemblies are programmed in a versatile manner using nucleic acids as readily-available and readily-tunable templates. In this review, we summarize the different DNA recognition modes and the basic supramolecular interactions at play in this context. We discuss the recent results that report the DNA-templated self-assembly of small molecules into complex yet precise nanoarrays, going from 1D to 3D architectures. Finally, we show their emerging functions as photonic/electronic nanowires, sensors, gene delivery vectors, and supramolecular catalysts, and their growing applications in a wide range of area from materials to biological sciences.

Alternating copolymerization by nitroxide-mediated polymerization and subsequent orthogonal functionalization

A novel method for the preparation of functionalized alternating copolymers is presented. Nitroxide-mediated polymerization of hexafluoroisopropyl acrylate with 7-octenyl vinyl ether provides the corresponding alternating polymer, which can be chemically modified using two orthogonal polymer-analogous reactions. A thiol-ene click reaction followed by amidation provides dual-functionalized alternating copolymers. The potential of this method is illustrated by the preparation of a small library (15 examples) of functionalized alternating copolymers.

Reactions templated by nucleic acids: more ways to translate oligonucleotide-based instructions into emerging function

The programmability of oligonucleotide recognition offers an attractive platform to direct the assembly of reactive partners that can engage in chemical reactions. Recently, significant progress has been made in both the breadth of chemical transformations and in the functional output of the reaction. Herein we summarize these recent progresses and illustrate their applications to translate oligonucleotide instructions into functional materials and novel architectures (conductive polymers, nanopatterns, novel oligonucleotide junctions); into fluorescent or bioactive molecule using cellular RNA; to interrogate secondary structures or oligonucelic acids; or a synthetic oligomer.
