Abstract
Chemoresponsive supramolecular systems with infinite switching capability are important for applications in recycled materials and intelligent devices. To attain this objective, here a chemoresponsive polypseudorotaxane is reported on the basis of a bis(p-phenylene)-34-crown-10 macrocycle (H) and a cyano-substituted viologen guest (G). H and G form a [2]pseudorotaxane (H⊃G) both in solution and in the solid state. Upon addition of AgSF6 , a polypseudorotaxane (denoted as [H⋅G⋅Ag]n ) forms as synergistically driven by host-guest complexation and metal-coordination interactions. [H⋅G⋅Ag]n depolymerizes into a [3]pseudorotaxane (denoted as H2 ⋅G⋅Ag2 ⋅acetone2 ) upon addition of H and AgSF6 , while it reforms with successive addition of G. The transformations between [H⋅G⋅Ag]n and H2 ⋅G⋅Ag2 ⋅acetone2 can be switched for infinite cycles, superior to the conventional chemoresponsive supramolecular polymeric systems with limited switching capability.

Abstract
Frequently encountered in crystalline materials, aromatic embraces (AEs) are formed when arylated molecules interact through multiple concerted aromatic interactions. AEs are a robust motif that is suitable for the preparation of amorphous bulk supramolecular polymers (BSPs). Crystal engineering revealed that the polymorphic compound (PPh3 )(Cp)Fe(CO){CO(CH2 )5 CH3 } (Cp=cyclopentadienyl), known as FpC6 , assembled into various chain structures through several AE motifs. Upon melting, FpC6 always adopted the same AE motif, which extended into the corresponding embracing "ladder" chains. The resultant BSP displayed typical polymer behaviour, including the presence of a glass transition and viscoelasticity, which allowed the effect of thermal history on the polymerisation behaviour to be explored. The ladder chains formed by the AE remain assembled at temperatures of up to 130 °C and were able to effectively suppress crystallisation during cooling. The ability of the AE to form chains at high temperatures and suppress crystallisation is a new opportunity to advance the field of BSPs and supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract
Pillararenes, as a new type of macrocyclic hosts, possess columnar structures and electron-rich cavities. Pillararenes not only recognize suitable cations, but also bind many neutral molecules. Due to the easy modification of pillararenes, various functional groups can be conveniently attached to the rim of pillararenes to provide suitable interaction sites, and the modified pillararenes even bind anionic guests. Thus, pillararenes and their derivatives have presented intriguing and unique host-guest recognition nature in the past few years, which make them ideal building blocks for the preparation of supramolecular polymers. Pillararene-based supramolecular polymers (PSPs) not only possess many merits of traditional covalent polymers but also have many specific properties, such as self-reparability, degradability, and self-adaptation. This feature paper gives an overview of the preparation of PSPs and covers recent research advance and future trends of pillararene-based host-guest pairs, assembly methods, topological architectures, stimuli-responsiveness, and functional features. We expect that the review will be helpful to researchers working in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science.

Abstract
We designed and synthesized a "hybrid" molecular container 1, which is structurally related to both cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) and pillar[n]arene type receptors. Receptor 1 was fully characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, IR, MS and X-ray single crystal diffraction. The self-association behavior, host-guest recognition properties of 1, and the [salt] dependence of Ka were investigated in detail by 1 H NMR and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Optical transmittance and TEM measurements provide strong evidence that receptor 1 undergoes co-assemble with amphiphilic guest C10 in water to form supramolecular bilayer vesicles (diameter 25.6±2.7 nm, wall thickness ≈3.5 nm) that can encapsulate the hydrophilic anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) and the hydrophobic dye Nile red (NR). The release of encapsulated DOX or NR from the vesicles can be triggered by hexamethonium (8 c) or spermine (10) which leads to the disruption of the supramolecular vesicles.

Abstract
Phenylalanine functionalised norbornene (9:Na) functions as a potent, low molecular-mass (MW = 333 Da) ionic organogelator with a minimum gelating concentration of 0.5 wt% in THF, i-PrOH, 1,4-dioxane and n-BuOH. Fibrous crystals form in the gel and X-ray crystallography identified a cation mediated helical assembly process controlled by the chirality of the phenylalanine. In addition to excellent gelating properties 9:Na readily forms aqueous biphasic and triphasic systems.

Supramolecular polymers exemplify the need to employ several computational techniques to study processes and phenomena occuring at varied length and time scales. Electronic processes, conformational and configurational excitations of small aggregates of chromophoric molecules, solvent effects under realistic thermodynamic conditions and mesoscale morphologies are some of the challenges which demand hierarchical modelling approaches. This review focusses on one-dimensional supramolecular polymers, the mechanism of self-assembly of monomers in polar and non-polar solvents and properties they exhibit. Directions for future work are as well outlined.

Abstract
Molecular self-assembly has played an important role in nanofabrication. Due to the weak driving forces of noncovalent bonds, developing molecular nanoassemblies that have both robust preparation conditions and stable structure is a challenge. In our previous work, we have developed a reversible self-assembly system of Au(I)-thiolate coordination polymer (ATCP) to form colloidal lamellar sheets and demonstrated the high tailorability and stability of their structures, as well as their promising applications in gold nanocluster/nanoparticle fabrication and UV light shielding. Here, we first reported our progress in exploring a robust and green assembly protocol toward ATCP colloidal lamellar sheets in water by allowing the molecular precursors of HAuCl4 and the thiol ligand to form ATCP preassembled intermediates. In this way, colloidal ATCP lamellar sheets can be prepared in a wide range of synthetic concentrations ([Au]0 ≥ 2 × 10-4 M) and at broad assembly temperatures (80-100 °C) with similar high yields (>80%). The assembly kinetics at different conditions are also studied in detail to help understand the robust assembly process. The robust and green synthetic protocols will pave a way for their real applications.

Abstract
Herein, a new reductive-responsive pillar[5]arene-based, single-molecule-layer polymer nanocapsule is constructed for drug delivery. The functionalized system shows good biocompatibility, efficient internalization into targeted cells and obvious triggered release of entrapped drugs in a reducing environment such as cytoplasm. Besides, this smart vehicle loaded with anticancer drug shows excellent inhibition for tumor cell proliferation and exhibits low side effect on normal cells. This work not only demonstrates the development of a new reductive-responsive single molecular layer polymer nanocapsule for anticancer drug targeting delivery but also extends the design of smart materials for biomedical applications.

Abstract
The structural complexity of mechanically interlocked molecules are very attractive to chemists owing to the challenges they present. In this article, novel mechanically interlocked molecules with a daisy-chain-containing hetero[4]rotaxane motif were efficiently synthesized. In addition, a novel integrative self-sorting strategy is demonstrated, involving an ABB-type (A for host, dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8), and B for guest, ammonium salt sites) monomer and a macrocycle host, benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7), in which the assembled species in hydrogen-bonding-supported solvent only includes a novel daisy-chain-containing hetero[4]pseudorotaxane. The found self-sorting process involves the integrative recognition between B21C7 macrocycles and carefully designed components simultaneously containing two types of secondary ammonium ions and a host molecule, DB24C8 crown ether. The self-sorting strategy is integrative to undertake self-recognition behavior to form one single species of pseudorotaxane compared with the previous report. This self-sorting system can be used for the efficient one-pot synthesis of a daisy-chain-containing hetero[4]rotaxane in a good yield. The structure of hetero[4]rotaxane was confirmed by 1 H NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution electrospray ionization (HR-ESI) mass spectrometry.

Abstract
Using fluorometry to study the interactions between guests and host cavities is often challenging, especially for hosts with small cavities because the fluorophore may not be close to the binding site. Therefore, it is critical to overcome this hurdle to broaden the applicability of fluorometry in supramolecular chemistry. Herein, we designed a fluorescent-cavity host (H1) by conjugating the binding site of a pillar[5]arene cavity and studied its host-guest recognition mechanism in the cavity. Distinct fluorescent responses of H1 were observed for cyano homologues: the fluorescence was enhanced for succinonitrile but quenched for malononitrile. Such an unusual phenomenon with such subtle difference in guest structure was attributed to the different host-guest interactions induced by the subtle difference of guest locations within the H1 cavity. Our results indicate that developing fluorescent-cavity hosts as probes will provide a powerful and insightful way to explore the exquisite detail of host-guest recognition, self-assembly, and molecular machinery.

Abstract
Chemosensors (CSs) with dynamically tunable detection ranges have important significance for their expansion in practical applications; however, most CSs possess an unchangeable detection limit. In this work, we report the first example of a supramolecular polymer vesicle (SPV) chemosensor with a dynamically tunable detection range. SPVs containing porphyrin (PP) moieties and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/azobenzene (Azo) host-guest interactions were first constructed. The obtained SPVs were used to detect Zn2+ with a high selectivity and sensitivity over a wide detection limit range of 8.67×10-9 to 1.99×10-11 under UV light irradiation. The corresponding sensing mechanism was attributed to the synergistic effects of the triple noncovalent interactions, including the metal-ligand coordination of PP/Zn2+ and the double host-guest interactions of β-CD/Azo and β-CD/PP.

Abstract
Multifunctional 2-amino-5-sulfobenzoic acid (H2afsb) can exhibit a variety of roles during the construction of supramolecular coordination polymers. The pendant carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid and amino groups could not only play a role in directing bonding but could also have the potential to act as hydrogen-bond donors and acceptors, resulting in extended high-dimensional supramolecular networks. Two new CuIIcoordination compounds, namelycatena-poly[[[diaquacopper(II)]-μ-1,6-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)hexane-κ2N4:N4′] bis(3-amino-4-carboxybenzenesulfonate) dihydrate], {[Cu(C10H16N6)2(H2O)2](C7H6NO5S)2·2H2O}nor {[Cu(bth)2(H2O)2](Hafsb)2·2H2O}n, (1), and bis(μ-2-amino-5-sulfonatobenzoato-κ2O1:O1′)bis{μ-1,2-bis[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene-κ2N3:N3′}bis[aquacopper(II)] trihydrate, [Cu2(C7H5NO5S)2(C14H14N4)2(H2O)2]·3H2O or [Cu2(afsb)2(obix)2(H2O)2]·3H2O, (2), have been obtained through the assembly between H2afsb and the CuIIion in the presence of the flexible N-donor ligands 1,6-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)hexane (bth) and 1,2-bis[(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene (obix), respectively. Compound (1) consists of a cationic coordination polymeric chain and 3-amino-4-carboxybenzenesulfonate (Hafsb−) anions. Compound (2) exhibits an asymmetric dinuclear structure. There are hydrogen-bonded networks within the lattices of (1) and (2). Interestingly, both (1) and (2) exhibit reversible dehydration–rehydration behaviour.

Abstract
The self-assembly of internally ion-paired, neutral AA/BB-type supramolecular polymers composed of complementary di-ionizable homoditopic pairs of monomers is reported. Host-to-guest double-proton transfer mediates the recognition between bis-calix[5]arenedicarboxylic acids and α,ω-diaminoalkanes to yield cyclic, doughnut-shaped assemblies with morphologies (i.e., cyclic vs. linear) that can be controlled by means of external chemical stimuli. The behavior of these intriguing aggregates, both in solution and on surfaces, has been investigated by a combination of 1 H and DOSY NMR spectroscopy, light-scattering, and atomic force microscopy.

Abstract
A new method of supramolecular polymerization at the water-oil interface is developed. As a demonstration, an oil-soluble supramonomer containing two thiol end groups linked by two ureidopyrimidinone units and a water-soluble monomer bearing two maleimide end groups are employed. Supramolecular interfacial polymerization can be implemented by a thiol-maleimide click reaction at the water-chloroform interface to obtain supramolecular polymeric films. The glass transition temperature of such supramolecular polymers can be well-tuned by simply changing the polymerization time and temperature. It is highly anticipated that this work will provide a facile and general approach to realize control over supramolecular polymerization by transferring the preparation of supramolecular polymers from solutions to water-oil interfaces and construct supramolecular materials with well-defined properties.

Abstract
Conjugated pillar[5]arene-diketopyrrolopyrrole copolymer (P1) is synthesized by the copolymerization of a difunctionalized pillar[5]arene and a diketopyrrolopyrrole-based monomer, which shows large extinction coefficients (1.1 × 104 m-1 cm-1 ) at 519 nm and strong emission at 587 nm. P1 exhibits very strong host-guest binding affinity towards adiponitrile but low binding affinity towards 1,4-dihalobutane and 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-yl)butane. Such an enhanced selectivity is first found in the polypseudorotaxane between pillararene and neutral guests in organic solution and is successfully used for the recognition and adsorption of adiponitrile by the formation of a P1-adiponitrile polypseudorotaxane.

Abstract
On the basis of many literature measurements, a critical overview is given on essential noncovalent interactions in synthetic supramolecular complexes, accompanied by analyses with selected proteins. The methods, which can be applied to derive binding increments for single noncovalent interactions, start with the evaluation of consistency and additivity with a sufficiently large number of different host-guest complexes by applying linear free energy relations. Other strategies involve the use of double mutant cycles, of molecular balances, of dynamic combinatorial libraries, and of crystal structures. Promises and limitations of these strategies are discussed. Most of the analyses stem from solution studies, but a few also from gas phase. The empirically derived interactions are then presented on the basis of selected complexes with respect to ion pairing, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic contributions, halogen bonding, π-π-stacking, dispersive forces, cation-π and anion-π interactions, and contributions from the hydrophobic effect. Cooperativity in host-guest complexes as well as in self-assembly, and entropy factors are briefly highlighted. Tables with typical values for single noncovalent free energies and polarity parameters are in the Supporting Information.
