Abstract
A newly designed zinc Lewis acid/base hybrid catalyst was developed. By adjusting the Lewis acidity of the zinc center, aldol-type additions of 2-picolylamine Schiff base to aldehydes proceeded smoothly to afford syn-aldol adduct equivalents, trans-N,O-acetal adducts, in high yields with high selectivities. NMR experiments, including microchanneled cell for synthesis monitoring (MICCS) NMR analysis, revealed that anti-aldol adducts were formed at the initial stage of the reactions under kinetic control, but the final products were the trans-(syn)-N,O-acetal adducts that were produced through a retro-aldol process under thermodynamic control. In the whole reaction process, the zinc catalyst played three important roles: i) promotion of the aldol process (C-C bond formation), ii) cyclization process to the N,O-acetal product (C-O bond formation), and iii) retro-aldol process from the anti-aldol adduct to the syn-aldol adduct (C-C bond cleavage and C-C bond formation).

Abstract
A natural product inspired synthesis of 6,6,5-tricyclic compounds via a silver(I)-catalyzed formal 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of coumarins with α-iminoesters was developed. The reaction proceeds in a stepwise reaction course under formation of the trans-substituted diastereomer with respect to the 1,3-dipole and shows a broad substrate scope.

Abstract
The first catalytic enantioselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides to α-aminoacrylate catalyzed by a AgOAc/ferrocenyl oxazolinylphosphine (FOXAP) system was developed, which exhibits excellent exo- and enantioselectivity (92-99 % ee). This process provides efficient access to useful 4-aminopyrrolidine-2,4-dicarboxylic acid (APDC)-like compounds containing a unique quaternary α-amino acid unit.

Abstract
Asymmetric [3+2] cycloaddition of α-aminoester Schiff bases with substituted olefins is one of the most efficient methods for the preparation of chiral pyrrolidine derivatives in optically pure form. In spite of its potential utility, applicable substrates for this method have been limited to Schiff bases that bear relatively acidic α-hydrogen atoms. Here we report a chiral silver amide complex for asymmetric [3+2] cycloaddition reactions. A silver complex prepared from silver bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (AgHMDS) and (R)-DTBM-SEGPHOS worked well in asymmetric [3+2] cycloaddition reactions of α-aminoester Schiff bases with several olefins to afford the corresponding pyrrolidine derivatives in high yields with remarkable exo- and enantioselectivities. Furthermore, α-aminophosphonate Schiff bases, which have less acidic α-hydrogen atoms, also reacted with olefins with high exo- and enantioselectivities. The stereoselectivities of the [3+2] cycloadditions with maleate and fumarate suggested that the reaction proceeded by means of a concerted mechanism. An NMR spectroscopic study indicated that complexation of AgHMDS with the bisphosphine ligand was not complete, and that free AgHMDS, which did not show any significant catalytic activity, existed in the catalyst solution. This means that significant ligand acceleration occurred in the current reaction system.
