Abstract
The chiral self-assembly of trispentahelicene propellers on a gold surface has been investigated in ultrahigh vacuum by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. The trispentahelicene propellers aggregate into mirror domains with an enantiomeric ratio of 2 : 1. Thermally induced cyclodehydrogenation leads to planarization into nanographenes, which self-assemble into closed-packed layers with two different azimuths. Further treatment induces in part dimerization and trimerization by intermolecular cyclodehydrogenation.

Abstract
The phenomenon of chiral crystallization into homochiral crystals is known for more than 170 years, yet it is still poorly understood. Studying crystallization on surfaces under well-defined condition seems a promising approach towards better understanding the intermolecular chiral recognition mechanisms during nucleation and growth. The two-dimensional aggregation of racemic trioxaundecahelicene on the single crystalline silver(100) surface has been investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy and with non-contact atomic force microscopy, as well as molecular modeling simulations. A transition from homochiral cluster motifs to heterochiral assembly into large islands with increasing coverage is observed. Force field modelling confirms higher stability of heterochiral arrangements from twelve molecules on. Results are discussed with respect to previous findings for the all-carbon heptahelicene on the same surface.

Abstract
We investigated the adsorption of three related cyano-functionalized tetraphenyl porphyrin derivatives on Cu(111) by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) with the goal to identify the role of the cyano group and the central Cu atom for the intermolecular and supramolecular arrangement. The porphyrin derivatives studied were Cu-TCNPP, Cu-cisDCNPP, and 2H-cisDCNPP, that is, Cu-5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(p-cyano)-phenylporphyrin, Cu-meso-cis-di(p-cyano)-phenylporphyrin and 2H-meso-cis-di(p-cyano)-phenylporphyrin, respectively. Starting from different structures obtained after deposition at room temperature, all three molecules form the same long-range ordered hexagonal honeycomb-type structure with triangular pores and three molecules per unit cell. For the metal-free 2H-cisDCNPP, this occurs only after self-metalation upon heating. The structure-forming elements are pores with a distance of 3.1 nm, formed by triangles of porphyrins fused together by cyano-Cu-cyano interactions with Cu adatoms. This finding leads us to suggest that two cyano-phenyl groups in the "cis" position is the minimum prerequisite to form a highly ordered 2D porous molecular pattern. The experimental findings are supported by detailed density functional theory calculations to analyze the driving forces that lead to the formation of the porous hexagonal honeycomb-type structure.

Abstract
Optically pure dicyano oxa[7]helicenes and helicene-like molecules have been prepared and investigated for their optical behavior. The isomers of the intermediate 4,4'-biphen-anthrene-3,3'-diol were resolved by physically separating their 1-menthyl carbonate derivatives. In this work a mild method was developed to cleave ArOMe in presence of a cyano group. The optical rotation of atropisomeric diol, helicenes-like compounds and the oxa[7]helicenes was observed to be in increasing order, while the molecules also showed good response to circularly polarized luminescence.

Abstract
The synthesis of redox-active p- and o-quinones 2-phenylamino-4-phenylimino[6]helicene-1-one 1, 2-phenylamino[6]-helicene-1,4-dione 2, and 4-phenyl[6]helicene-1,2-dione 3 in their enantiopure forms by post-functionalization of (P)- and (M)-1,2-dimethoxy[6]helicene is presented. Structural characterization in solution and in the solid state was accomplished by 2D NMR spectroscopy methods and X-ray diffraction analysis, respectively. Interpretation of electrochemical redox data was accompanied by a detailed orbital picture, derived from DFT calculations. The electronic structures of compounds 1-3 were investigated by UV/Vis and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy, complemented by TD-DFT calculations. Quinones 1-3 were chemically reduced to study the EPR signatures of their respective radical anions. DFT methods were used for the atom assignment of the hyperfine coupling constants. The results are discussed within the context of electrochromic chiral switches and molecular recognition.

Abstract
The self-assembly of cyano-functionalized triarylamine derivatives on Cu(111), Ag(111) and Au(111) was studied by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Different bonding motifs, such as antiparallel dipolar coupling, hydrogen bonding and metal coordination, were observed. Whereas on Ag(111) only one hexagonally close-packed pattern stabilized by hydrogen bonding is observed, on Au(111) two different partially porous phases are present at submonolayer coverage, stabilized by dipolar coupling, hydrogen bonding and metal coordination. In contrast to the self-assembly on Ag(111) and Au(111), for which large islands are formed, on Cu(111), only small patches of hexagonally close-packed networks stabilized by metal coordination and areas of disordered molecules are found. The significant variety in the molecular self-assembly of the cyano-functionalized triarylamine derivatives on these coinage metal surfaces is explained by differences in molecular mobility and the subtle interplay between intermolecular and molecule-substrate interactions.
