Abstract
A one-step method for the conversion of nitroarenes into phenols under operationally simple, transition-metal-free conditions is described. This denitrative functionalization protocol provides a concise and economical alternative to conventional three-step synthetic sequences. Experimental and computational studies suggest that nitroarenes may be substituted by an electron-catalysed radical-nucleophilic substitution (SRN 1) chain mechanism.

Abstract
Recently, inexpensive and readily available tBuOK has seen widespread use in transition-metal-free reactions. Herein, we report the use of tBuOK for S-S, S-Se, N[double bond, length as m-dash]N and C[double bond, length as m-dash]N bond formations, which significantly extends the scope of tBuOK in chemical synthesis. Compared with traditional methods, we have realized mild and general methods for disulfide, azobenzenes imine etc. synthesis.

Abstract
A transition-metal (TM)-free and halogen-free NaOtBu-mediated oxidative cross-coupling between the sp3 C-H bond of oxindoles and sp2 C-H bond of nitroarenes has been developed to access 3-aryl substituted and 3,3-aryldisubstituted oxindoles in DMSO at room temperature in a short time. Interestingly, the sp3 C-H bond of oxindoles could also react with styrene under TM-free conditions for the practical synthesis of quaternary 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles. The synthesized 3-oxindoles have also been further transformed into advanced heterocycles, that is, benzofuroindoles, indoloindoles, and substituted indoles. Mechanistic experiments of the reaction suggests the formation of an anion intermediate from the sp3 C-H bond of oxindole by tert-butoxide base in DMSO. The addition of nitrobenzene to the in-situ generated carbanion leads to the 3-(nitrophenyl)oxindolyl carbanion in DMSO which is subsequently oxidized to 3-(nitro-aryl) oxindole by DMSO.

Abstract
Activation of the carbon-halogen bonds in aryl halides is a key step in transition-metal-free cross-coupling reactions. In this paper, a new and efficient radical initiation system for the activation of iodoarenes to produce aryl radicals was discovered, which employs the combination of N-methylanilines and tBuOK. This radical initiation system is robust and versatile, enabling various types of aryl-radical-related reactions.

Abstract
Dyes can CO do it: Organic dyes and pigments are usually applied in textile dyeing, which can be dated back to the Neolithic period. Interestingly, the possibility to use organic dyes as photoredox catalysts has also been noticed by organic chemists and applied in organic synthesis. Carbonylation reactions as a powerful procedure in carbonyl-containing compound preparation have also been studied. In this manuscript, the recent achievements in using organic dyes as visible-light sensitizers in carbonylation chemistry are summarized and discussed.

Abstract
Novel conditions for the transformation of gem-dibromomethylenes to ketones are described. gem-Dibromo compounds were treated with acetic anhydride and triethylamine in dichloromethane/water at room temperature under an air atmosphere to give the corresponding ketones in moderate yields. A radical mechanism is proposed based on experimental results.

Abstract
Back to basics: A transition-metal-free method developed for the synthesis of indazoles involves an inexpensive catalytic system composed of a diamine and K2CO3. Various (Z)-2-bromoacetophenone tosylhydrazones were converted into indazoles at room temperature in excellent yields (see example; Ts = p-toluenesulfonyl). The yield was improved by photoisomerization with UV light when E/Z isomeric mixtures of the starting material were used.
