Revisiting the Bonding Model for Gold(I) Species: The Importance of Pauli Repulsion Revealed in a Gold(I)-Cyclobutadiene Complex

Understanding the bonding of gold(I) species has been central to the development of gold(I) catalysis. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of the first gold(I)-cyclobutadiene complex, accompanied with bonding analysis by state-of-the-art energy decomposition analysis methods. Analysis of possible coordination modes for the new species not only confirms established characteristics of gold(I) bonding, but also suggests that Pauli repulsion is a key yet hitherto overlooked element. Additionally, we obtain a new perspective on gold(I)-bonding by comparison of the gold(I)-cyclobutadiene to congeners stabilized by p-, d-, and f-block metals. Consequently, we refine the gold(I) bonding model, with a delicate interplay of Pauli repulsion and charge transfer as the key driving force for various coordination motifs. Pauli repulsion is similarly determined as a significant interaction in AuI -alkyne species, corroborating this revised understanding of AuI bonding.

Formation of Agostic Structures Driven by London Dispersion

Agostic interactions between a C-H bond and a transition metal are commonly crucial in catalytic polymerization processes. Herein, a quantitative study of the nature of β-agostic interactions in a series of systems of importance in C-H bond activation reactions is reported. The analysis, characterized by the use of a coupled-cluster-based energy decomposition scheme, demonstrates that short-range London dispersion between the agostic C-H bond and the metal center plays a fundamental role in affecting the structural stability of these systems, contrary to a widely held view. These results are used to rationalize a series of previously published experimental findings.

Methanol-Water Aqueous-Phase Reforming with the Assistance of Dehydrogenases at Near-Room Temperature

As an excellent hydrogen-storage medium, methanol has many advantages, such as high hydrogen content (12.6 wt %), low cost, and availability from biomass or photocatalysis. However, conventional methanol-water reforming usually proceeds at high temperatures. In this research, we successfully designed a new effective strategy to generate hydrogen from methanol at near-room temperature. The strategy involved two main processes: CH₃ OH→HCOOH→H₂ and NADH→HCOOH→H₂ . The first process (CH₃ OH→HCOOH→H₂ ) was performed by an alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), an aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), and an Ir catalyst. The second procedure (NADH→HCOOH→H₂ ) was performed by formate dehydrogenase (FDH) and the Ir catalyst. The Ir catalyst used was a previously reported polymer complex catalyst [Cp*IrCl₂ (ppy); Cp*=pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, ppy=polypyrrole] with high catalytic activity for the decomposition of formic acid at room temperature and is compatible with enzymes, coenzymes, and poisoning chemicals. Our results revealed that the optimum hydrogen generation rate could reach up to 17.8 μmol h^-1  g_cat^-1 under weak basic conditions at 30 °C. This will have high impact on hydrogen storage, production, and applications and should also provide new inspiration for hydrogen generation from methanol.

Selectively measuring π back-donation in gold(I) complexes by NMR spectroscopy

Even though the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model has been successfully used by chemists since the 1950s, no experimental methodology is yet known to unambiguously estimate the constituents (donation and back-donation) of a metal-ligand interaction. It is demonstrated here that one of these components, the metal-to-ligand π back-donation, can be effectively probed by NMR measurements aimed at determining the rotational barrier of a C-N bond (ΔHr (≠) ) of a nitrogen acyclic carbene ligand. A large series of gold(I) complexes have been synthesized and analyzed, and it was found that the above experimental observables show an accurate correlation with back-donation, as defined theoretically by the appropriate charge displacement originated upon bond formation. The proposed method is potentially of wide applicability for analyzing the ligand effect in metal catalysts and guiding their design.

A quantitative view of charge transfer in the hydrogen bond: the water dimer case

The hydrogen bond represents a fundamental intermolecular interaction that binds molecules in vapor and liquid water. A crucial and debated aspect of its electronic structure and chemistry is the charge transfer (CT) accompanying it. Much effort has been devoted, in particular, to the study of the smallest prototype system, the water dimer, but even here results and interpretations differ widely. In this paper, we reassess CT in the water dimer by using charge-displacement analysis. Besides a reliable estimate of the amount of CT (14.6 me) that characterizes the system, our study provides an unambiguous context, and very useful bounds, within which CT effects may be evaluated, crucially including the associated energy stabilization.
