Palladium-Catalyzed [2+3] Cycloaddition/Cross-Coupling Reaction: Z/E and Diastereoselective Synthesis of Dendralene-Functionalized Dihydrofurans

Herein, we describe a Pd-catalyzed [2+3] cycloaddition/cross-coupling reaction of allenyl acetates for the Z/E selective and diastereoselective synthesis of dendralene-functionalized dihydrofurans. Remarkably, mechanistic studies show the formation of an epoxide from a carbonyl bond via cycloaddition, which is practically and mechanistically significant for the construction of other bioactive heterocyclic epoxides. This research also revealed the utility and potential of allenic esters as C2 synthons and 1,2-biselectrophiles in cycloaddition reactions.

Mild Intermolecular Synthesis of a Cyclopropane-Containing Tricyclic Skeleton: Unusual Reactivity of Isobenzopyryliums

Cyclopropanes embedded in a polycyclic bridged architecture are a versatile structural motif, but such complex frameworks often impose substantial synthetic challenges. Herein we introduce a new approach for the expedient access to such spring-loaded strained systems via an exceptionally mild intermolecular convergent process between the readily available isobenzopyryliums and vinyl boronic acids. Different from the typical conventional approaches, our protocol does not involve the highly active carbenoid intermediates or strong conditions in order to overcome the disfavored kinetic and thermodynamic problems. Instead, the key cyclopropane ring was formed between the well-positioned nucleophile and electrophile in the adduct from the regioselective [4+2] cycloaddition. Thus, this unusual process also represents a new reactivity of the versatile isobenzopyryliums. The choice of a Brønsted acid catalyst with proper acidity is crucial to the high efficiency and selectivity for this multiple bond-forming process. The strained products are precursors to other useful synthetic building blocks.

C,O-Chelated BINOL/Gold(III) Complexes: Synthesis and Catalysis with Tunable Product Profiles

Unprecedented stable BINOL/gold(III) complexes, adopting a novel C,O-chelation mode, were synthesized by a modular approach through combination of 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diols (BINOLs) and cyclometalated gold(III) dichloride complexes [(C^N)AuCl₂ ]. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that the bidentate BINOL ligands tautomerized and bonded to the Au^III atom through C,O-chelation to form a five-membered ring instead of the conventional O,O'-chelation giving a seven-membered ring. These gold(III) complexes catalyzed acetalization/cycloisomerization and carboalkoxylation of ortho-alkynylbenzaldehydes with trialkyl orthoformates.

Catalyst-dependent divergent synthesis of pyrroles from 3-alkynyl imine derivatives: a noncarbonylative and carbonylative approach

A novel Ru(0)- and Rh(I)-catalyzed noncarbonylative and carbonylative cycloisomerization of readily available 3-alkynyl imine derivatives has been developed to provide 3,4-fused or nonfused pyrrole derivatives efficiently in moderate to excellent yields. The key steps involve the formation of a ruthenium carbenoid intermediate or a rhodacycle intermediate, respectively. In these reactions, CO can serve as a ligand or a reagent.
