A Trinuclear Defect-Grid Iron(II) Spin Crossover Complex with a Large Hysteresis Loop that is Readily Silenced by Solvent Vapor

Spin-state versatility in FeII4L6 supramolecular cages with a pyridyl-hydrazone ligand scaffold modulated by solvents and counter anions

Discrete spin crossover (SCO) tetranuclear cages are a unique class of materials that have potential use in next-generation molecular recognition and sensing. In this work, two new edge-bridged SCO FeII4L6 (L = 2,7-bis(((E)-pyridin-2-ylmethylene)amino)benzo[lmn] [3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone) supramolecular cages with different counter anions: ClO4- (2) and CF3SO3- (3) were constructed via subcomponent self-assembly to investigate both solvent and anion influences on their magnetic properties and compare them to cage 1 with a BF4- anion. Pyridyl-hydrazone bidentate ligand scaffolds were employed to replace the 'classical' imidazole/thiazolyl-imine coordination units to induce SCO behaviour in these cages. 2 and 3 were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Magnetic susceptibilities of 1-3 and 1-3·desolvated indicate that the solvents' presence is in favor of the low-spin (LS) state. While different counter anions in 1-3·desolvated affect the spin-state configurations of the four FeII metal centers. According to the 57Fe Mössbauer spectral analysis, the spin-state distributions in 1-3 at 80 K are [2 high-spin (HS)-2LS], [1HS-3LS] and [2HS-2LS], respectively and density functional theory calculations were employed to investigate the reasons. These findings provide insights to regulate the spin-state versatility of SCO FeII cage systems in the solid state.

Unravelling of a [High Spin-Low Spin] ↔ [Low Spin-High Spin] Equilibrium in Spin-Crossover Iron(II) Dinuclear Helicates Using Paramagnetic NMR Spectroscopy

Spin-crossover between high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states of selected transition metal ions in polynuclear and polymeric compounds is behind their use as multistep switchable materials in breakthrough electronic and spintronic devices. We report the first successful attempt to observe the dynamics of a rarely found broken-symmetry spin state in binuclear complexes, which mixes the states [HS-LS] and [LS-HS] on a millisecond timescale. The slow exchange between these two states, which was identified by paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy in solutions of two spin-crossover iron(II) binuclear helicates that are amenable to molecular design, opens a path to double quantum dot cellular automata for information storage and processing.

A Family of Heterobimetallic Cubes Shows Spin-Crossover Behaviour Near Room Temperature

Using 4-(4'-pyridyl)aniline as a simple organic building block in combination with three different aldehyde components together with metal(II) salts gave three different Fe8 Pt6 -cubes and their corresponding Zn8 Pt6 analogues by employing the subcomponent self-assembly approach. Whereas the use of zinc(II) salts gave rise to diamagnetic cages, iron(II) salts yielded metallosupramolecular cages that show spin-crossover behaviour in solution. The spin-transition temperature T1/2 depends on the incorporated aldehyde component, giving a construction kit for the deliberate synthesis of spin-crossover compounds with tailored transition properties. Incorporation of 4-thiazolecarbaldehyde or N-methyl-2-imidazole-carbaldehyde yielded cages that undergo spin-crossover around room temperature whereas the cage obtained using 1H-4-imidazolecarbaldehyde shows a spin-transition at low temperatures. Three new structures were characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and all structures were characterized by mass spectrometry, NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy.

Reversible Guest Binding in a Non-Porous Fe(II) Coordination Polymer Host Toggles Spin Crossover

Formation of either a dimetallic compound or a 1 D coordination polymer of adiponitrile adducts of [Fe(bpte)](2+) (bpte=[1,2-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)thio]ethane) can be controlled by the choice of counteranion. The iron(II) atoms of the bis(adiponitrile)-bridged dimeric complex [Fe2 (bpte)2 (μ2 -(NC(CH2 )4 CN)2 ](SbF6 )4 (2) are low spin at room temperature, as are those in the polymeric adiponitrile-linked acetone solvate polymer {[Fe(bpte)(μ2 -NC(CH2 )4 CN)](BPh4 )2 ⋅Me2 CO} (3⋅Me2 CO). On heating 3⋅Me2 CO to 80 °C, the acetone is abruptly removed with an accompanying purple to dull lavender colour change corresponding to a conversion to a high-spin compound. Cooling reveals that the desolvate 3 shows hysteretic and abrupt spin crossover (SCO) S=0↔S=2 behaviour centred at 205 K. Non-porous 3 can reversibly absorb one equivalent of acetone per iron centre to regenerate the same crystalline phase of 3⋅Me2 CO concurrently reinstating a low-spin state.

A two-in-one pincer ligand and its diiron(II) complex showing spin state switching in solution through reversible ligand exchange

A novel pyrazolate-bridged ligand providing two {PNN} pincer-type compartments has been synthesized. Its diiron(II) complex LFe2(OTf)3(CH3CN) (1; Tf = triflate) features, in solid state, two bridging triflate ligands, with a terminal triflate and a MeCN ligand completing the octahedral coordination spheres of the two high-spin metal ions. In MeCN solution, 1 is shown to undergo a sequential, reversible, and complete spin transition to the low-spin state upon cooling. Detailed UV/Vis and (19)F NMR spectroscopic studies as well as magnetic measurements have unraveled that spin state switching correlates with a rapid multistep triflate/MeCN ligand exchange equilibrium. The spin transition temperature can be continuously tuned by varying the triflate concentration in solution.
