Abstract
Pd-based molecular square Pd4 L4 and triangle Pd3 L3 represent the molecular ancestors of metal-coordination polyhedra that have been an integral part of the field for the last 30 years. Conventional solution-based reactions between cis-protected Pd ions and 2,2'-bipyridine exclusively give Pd4 L4 and/or Pd3 L3 as the sole products. We herein show that, under solvent-free mechanochemical conditions, the self-assembly energy landscape can be thermodynamically manipulated to form an elusive cyclic dimer Pd2 L2 for the first time. In the absence of solvent, Pd2 L2 is indefinitely stable in the solid-state, but converts rapidly to its thermodynamic products Pd3 L3 and Pd4 L4 in solution, confirming Pd2 L2 as a short-lived kinetic species in the solution-based self-assembly process. Our results highlight how mechanochemistry grants access to a vastly different chemical space than available under conventional solution conditions. This provides a unique opportunity to isolate elusive species in self-assembly processes that are too reactive to both "see" and "capture".

Abstract
Non-covalent interactions are important for directing protein folding across multiple intermediates and can even provide access to multiple stable structures with different properties and functions. Herein, we describe an approach for mimicking this behavior in the self-assembly of metal-organic cages. Two ligands, the bend angles of which are controlled by non-covalent interactions and one ligand lacking the above-mentioned interactions, were synthesized and used for self-assembly with Pd2+ . As these weak interactions are easily broken, the bend angles have a controlled flexibility giving access to M2 (L1)4 , M6 (L2)12 , and M12 (L2)24 cages. By controlling the self-assembly conditions this process can be directed in a stepwise fashion. Additionally, the multiple endohedral hydrogen-bonding sites on the ligand were found to play a role in the binding and discrimination of neutral guests.

Abstract
A kinetic trap is the metastable species that is transiently or constantly produced during the reaction by trapping in a deep energy well. In most cases, the reactivity of kinetically trapped species is relatively low under the reaction conditions. Herein, we report another type of kinetically trapped species that is an incomplete cage (IC) intermediate produced during the self-assembly of a Pd2 L4 cage from ditopic ligand (L) and PdII ions with a certain lifetime, although IC has a high enough reactivity to be converted into the cage with the reaction of free L, which was confirmed by the reaction of the isolated IC and L under the self-assembly conditions. IC was kinetically trapped not because IC lies on the bottom of a deep energy well but because the conversion of the intermediates essential for the conversion of IC to the cage preferentially takes place; IC was kinetically trapped independently of the shape of the energy landscape of the self-assembly.

Abstract
The self-assembly of eight PdII cations and sixteen phenanthrene-derived bridging ligands with 60° bite angles yielded a novel M8 L16 metallosupramolecular architecture composed of two interlocked D4h -symmetric barrel-shaped containers. Mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray analysis revealed this self-assembled structure to be a very large "Hopf link" catenane featuring channel-like cavities, which are occupied by NO3- anions. The importance of the anions as catenation templates became imminent when we observed the nitrate-triggered structural rearrangement of a mixture of M3 L6 and M4 L8 assemblies formed in the presence of BF4- anions into the same interlocked molecule. Furthermore, the densely packed structure of the M8 L16 catenane was exploited in the preparation of a hexyloxy-functionalized analogue, which further self-assembled into vesicle-like aggregates in a reversible manner.

Abstract
Pentaphosphaferrocenes [CpR Fe(η5 -P5 )] (1) and CuI halides are excellent building blocks for the formation of discrete supramolecules. Herein, we demonstrate the potential of Cu(CF3 SO3 ) for the construction of the novel 2D polymer [{Cp*Fe(μ4 ,η5:1:1:1 -P5 )}{Cu(CF3 SO3 )}]n (2) and the unprecedented nanosphere (CH2 Cl2 )1.4 @[{CpBn Fe(η5 -P5 )}12 {Cu(CF3 SO3 )}19.6 ] (3). The supramolecule 3 has a unique scaffold beyond the fullerene topology, with 20 copper atoms statistically distributed over the 30 vertices of an icosidodecahedron. Combinatorics was used to interpret the average disordered structure of the supramolecules. In this case, only two pairs of enantiomers with D5 and D2 symmetry are possible for bidentate bridging coordination of the triflate ligands. DFT calculations showed that differences in the energies of the isomers are negligible. The benzyl ligands enhance the solubility of 3, enabling NMR-spectroscopic and mass-spectrometric investigations.

Abstract
Synthetic self-assembly is a powerful technique for the bottom-up construction of discrete and well-defined polyhedral nanostructures resembling the spherical shape of large biological systems. In recent years, numerous Archimedean-shaped coordination cages have been reported based on the assembly of bent monodentate organic ligands containing two or more distal pyridyl rings and square-planar PdII ions. The formation of photoactive PdII metallamacrocycles and cages, however, remain rare. Here we report the first examples of emissive and homochiral supramolecular cages of the form [Ir8 Pd4 ]16+ . These cages provide a suitably sized cavity to host large guest molecules. Importantly, encapsulation and energy transfer have been observed between the blue-emitting NBu4 [Ir(dFppy)2 (CN)2 ] guest and the red-emitting Δ8 -[Ir8 Pd4 ]16+ cage.

Abstract
A pentanuclear coordination complex assembled from any palladium(II) component and non-chelating ligands is hitherto unreported. The pentanuclear complex [Pd5 (L1)5 (L2)5 ](BF4 )10 , 1 reported here was prepared by the spontaneous complexation of [Pd(DMSO)4 ](BF4 )2 with the non-chelating bidentate ligands 1,4-phenylenebis(methylene) diisonicotinate, L1 and 4,4'-bipyridine, L2 in a one-pot method at room temperature. The planar polycyclic complex 1 with outer diameters of ≈3 nm is termed as a "molecular star" owing to its resemblance with a pentagram shape. Interim paths leading to the star were also probed to decipher related dynamics of the system.

Abstract
Physiological and pathological functions of glycans are promoted through their clustering effects as exemplified by a series of gangliosides, sialylated glycosphingolipids, which serve as acceptors for bacterial toxins and viruses. Furthermore, ganglioside GM1 clusters on neuronal cell membranes specifically interact with amyloidogenic proteins, triggering their conformational transitions and leading to neurodegeneration. Here we develop a self-assembled spherical complex that displays a cluster of the GM1 pentasaccharide, and successfully demonstrate its ability to interact with amyloid β and α-synuclein. Due to the lack of hydrophobic lipid moieties, which would stably trap these cohesive proteins or give rise to toxic aggregates, this artificial cluster enabled NMR spectroscopic characterization of the early encounter stage of protein interactions with its outer carbohydrate moieties, which were not observable with previous glycan clusters.
