Identification and Spectroscopic Characterization of Nonheme Iron(III) Hypochlorite Intermediates

Mechanism for the Halogenation and Azidation of Lysine Catalyzed by Non-heme Iron BesD Enzyme

Selective halogenation is important in synthetic chemistry. BesD, a new member of the non-heme Fe(II)/α-ketoglutarate (αKG)-dependent halogenase family, can activate the sp3 C-H bond and halogenate lysine, in particular without a carrier protein. Using the density functional calculations, a chlorination mechanism in BesD has been proposed, mainly including the formation of Cl-Fe(IV)=O through the αKG decarboxylation, the isomerization of Cl-Fe(IV)=O, the substrate hydrogen abstraction by Fe(IV)=O, and the rebound of chloro to the substrate carbon radical. The hydrogen abstraction is rate-limiting. The isomerization of Cl-Fe(IV)=O is essential for the hydrogen abstraction and the chiral selectivity. The BesD-catalyzed bromination and azidation of lysine adopt the same mechanism as the chlorination. The hardly-changed overall barriers indicate that the introduced ligands (X) do not affect the reaction rate significantly, implying that the X-introduced reactions catalyzed by BesD may be extended to other X anions.

Crystallographic Evidence for a Sterically Induced Ferryl Tilt in a Non-Heme Oxoiron(IV) Complex that Makes it a Better Oxidant

Oxoiron(IV) units are often implicated as intermediates in the catalytic cycles of non-heme iron oxygenases and oxidases. The most reactive synthetic analogues of these intermediates are supported by tetradentate tripodal ligands with N-methylbenzimidazole or quinoline donors, but their instability precludes structural characterization. Herein we report crystal structures of two [Fe^IV (O)(L)]²⁺ complexes supported by pentadentate ligands incorporating these heterocycles, which show longer average Fe-N distances than the complex with only pyridine donors. These longer distances correlate linearly with log k₂ ' values for O- and H-atom transfer rates, suggesting that weakening the ligand field increases the electrophilicity of the Fe=O center. The sterically bulkier quinoline donors are also found to tilt the Fe=O unit away from a linear N-Fe=O arrangement by 10°.

On the Lewis Acidity of the Oxoiron(IV) Unit in a Tetramethylcyclam Complex

The correlation between oxidation state and Lewis acidity is well established for hexaquairon complexes in the +II and +III oxidation state, in which the higher oxidation state leads to a lower pK_a for the bound H₂ O ligand. This article addresses the Lewis acidity of the oxoiron(IV) complex [Fe^IV (O)(TMC)(OH₂ )]²⁺ (1-OH₂ ; TMC=1,4,8,11-tetramethylcyclam) by determining the pK_a of the H₂ O ligand. We establish that 1-OH₂ has a pK_a of 6.9±0.5, a value that falls in between those found for [Fe^III (OH₂ )₆ ]³⁺ and [Fe^II (OH₂ )₆ ]²⁺ . This intermediate value can be readily rationalized by the presence of the highly basic oxide ligand that mitigates the Lewis acidity of the iron(IV) center. Although the oxo ligand occupies only one position in 1-OH₂ , anti to all four methyl groups that protrude from the same face of the nonplanar TMC ligand, its conjugate base 1-OH exists as a mixture of syn and anti tautomers, which are related by proton transfer between the oxo and the hydroxo ligands.

Remarkable Anion-Dependent Spin-State Switching in Diiron(III) μ-Hydroxo Bisporphyrins: What Role do Counterions Play?

Addition of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (HTNP) to an ethene-bridged diiron(III) μ-oxo bisporphyrin (1) in CH₂ Cl₂ initially leads to the formation of diiron(III) μ-hydroxo bisporphyrin (2⋅TNP) with a phenolate counterion that, after further addition of HTNP or dissolution in a nonpolar solvent, converts to a diiron(III) complex with axial phenoxide coordination (3⋅(TNP)₂ ). The progress of the reaction from μ-oxo to μ-hydroxo to axially ligated complex has been monitored in solution by using ¹ H NMR spectroscopy because their signals appear in three different and distinct spectral regions. The X-ray structure of 2⋅TNP revealed that the nearly planar TNP counterion fits perfectly within the bisporphyrin cavity to form a strong hydrogen bond with the μ-hydroxo group, which thus stabilizes the two equivalent iron centers. In contrast, such counterions as I₅ , I₃ , BF₄ , SbF₆ , and PF₆ are found to be tightly associated with one of the porphyrin rings and, therefore, stabilize two different spin states of iron in one molecule. A spectroscopic investigation of 2⋅TNP has revealed the presence of two equivalent iron centers with a high-spin state (S=5/2) in the solid state that converts to intermediate spin (S=3/2) in solution. An extensive computational study by using a range of DFT methods was performed on 2⋅TNP and 2⁺ , and clearly supports the experimentally observed spin flip triggered by hydrogen-bonding interactions. The counterion is shown to perturb the spin-state ordering through, for example, hydrogen-bonding interactions, switched positions between counterion and axial ligand, ion-pair interactions, and charge polarization. The present investigation thus provides a clear rationalization of the unusual counterion-specific spin states observed in the μ-hydroxo bisporphyrins that have so far remained the most outstanding issue.

Mononuclear Nonheme Iron(III)-Iodosylarene and High-Valent Iron-Oxo Complexes in Olefin Epoxidation Reactions

High-spin iron(III)-iodosylarene complexes are highly reactive in the epoxidation of olefins, in which epoxides are formed as the major products with high stereospecificity and enantioselectivity. The reactivity of the iron(III)-iodosylarene intermediates is much greater than that of the corresponding iron(IV)-oxo complex in these reactions. The iron(III)-iodosylarene species-not high-valent iron(IV)-oxo and iron(V)-oxo species-are also shown to be the active oxidants in catalytic olefin epoxidation reactions. The present results are discussed in light of the long-standing controversy on the one oxidant versus multiple oxidants hypothesis in oxidation reactions.
