Abstract
Phosphahelicenes with thiophosphinic acid and ester functions have been obtained by the oxidative photocyclisation of olefins bearing both a benzophenanthrene and a benzophosphole unit. When the method has been extended to olefins bearing a partially saturated benzophospholene unit, a divergent regioselectivity of the photocyclisation step has been observed, leading to new helicenes in which the phosphorus function is located on the external rim of the helical backbone. The observed regioselectivity correlates well with the free-valence numbers of the atoms involved in the photocyclisation reaction (DFT calculations).

Abstract
A highly diastereo- and enantio-selective method for the asymmetric synthesis of molecules containing helicenes and stereogenic axes was developed based on organocatalysis. Various compounds bearing both helical and axial stereogenic elements were obtained in excellent enantioselectivities. The mechanism study revealed that the reaction proceeded through two stages: 1) The first cyclization produces a reaction intermediate containing a stereogenic axis. 2) The dynamic kinetic resolution of helix reaction intermediate following with cyclization generates a helix and another stereogenic axis.

Abstract
Herein, the experimental physicochemical and chiroptical properties of a series of phosphahelicenes are reported, focusing on their UV/Vis absorption, luminescence, electronic circular dichroism, optical rotations, and circularly polarized luminescence. Furthermore, detailed analysis of absorption and ECD spectra performed with the help of quantum-chemical calculations allowed us to highlight general features of these helicenic phosphines. Finally, due to well-suited electrochemical properties and thermal stability, the systems were successfully used as emitters in organic light-emitting diodes.

Abstract
A straightforward phosphine-catalyzed formal [4+2] annulation between α-branched allenoates and arylidene azlactones has been developed to access highly functionalized spirocyclohexenes. This cyclization favors the γ-addition of the phosphine-activated allenoates over a β'-addition pathway. Detailed computational studies support the proposed mechanism and provide a reasonable explanation for the observed regioselectivity and the noted effect of the catalyst.

Abstract
An efficient route to the synthesis of benzo[5]helicene derivatives functionalized on the interior side of the helix was developed, and resulted in a series of 1,16-diaryl-substituted benzo[5]helicene derivatives starting from easily available 7-methoxytetralone. X-ray crystal structures showed that the benzo[5]helicene derivatives had highly helical, twisted structures, and could all create hierarchical packing architectures with alternating P and M layers in the solid state. Moreover, seven pairs of enantiomers based on 1,16-diaryl-substituted benzo[5]helicene derivatives were also obtained by efficient resolution through HPLC with semipreparative chiral columns. The enantiomers all showed clear mirror-image circular dichroism (CD) spectra and high specific optical rotations, and their absolute configurations were determined by X-ray crystallography. Interestingly, a helical nanotubular structure was formed by the self-assembly of one enantiomer through halogen bonding. Furthermore, the enantiomers were found to have high racemization barriers and thermostability, which might be caused by the introduction of aryl substituents at the C1(C16) position.

Abstract
Twisted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were prepared by the successive rhodium-catalyzed annulation and dehydrogenative cyclization of bis(arylethynyl)arenes with di-tert-butylbiphenyl-2-ylboronic acid. The molecular structures of the PAHs were determined by single-crystal XRD analysis. The PAHs showed up to four fjord regions, and the twisting angle was 46.7°. The nonplanarity (NP) and harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) were calculated by using the structural data obtained from XRD analysis. The PAHs derived from dialkynyl naphthalenes showed low planarity and HOMA of the central ring. The optical properties of the PAHs were investigated by UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy analyses. The absorption and emission maxima of the PAHs with a larger planar region appeared at a longer wavelength. DFT calculations support that the absorption band at λ≈450 nm can be mainly attributed to the HOMO-LUMO transition.

Abstract
The synthesis of redox-active p- and o-quinones 2-phenylamino-4-phenylimino[6]helicene-1-one 1, 2-phenylamino[6]-helicene-1,4-dione 2, and 4-phenyl[6]helicene-1,2-dione 3 in their enantiopure forms by post-functionalization of (P)- and (M)-1,2-dimethoxy[6]helicene is presented. Structural characterization in solution and in the solid state was accomplished by 2D NMR spectroscopy methods and X-ray diffraction analysis, respectively. Interpretation of electrochemical redox data was accompanied by a detailed orbital picture, derived from DFT calculations. The electronic structures of compounds 1-3 were investigated by UV/Vis and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy, complemented by TD-DFT calculations. Quinones 1-3 were chemically reduced to study the EPR signatures of their respective radical anions. DFT methods were used for the atom assignment of the hyperfine coupling constants. The results are discussed within the context of electrochromic chiral switches and molecular recognition.
