Characterization of Highly Coordinated Allylgermanes: Pivotal Players for Enhanced Nucleophilicity and Stereoselectivity

Allylgermanes with a 4-, 5-, and 6-coordinated germanium center were characterized by X-ray crystallography. Cationic 6-coordinated group 14 allylmetals, which were hitherto assumed to be a transition-state structure of allylations, were successfully isolated. Forming high coordination states significantly enhanced the reactivity of the allylgermanes. In contrast to the 4-coordinated allylgermanes with low reactivity, the highly coordinated species readily reacted with several aldehydes. Furthermore, the high coordination states exerted a significant effect on the E/Z selectivity of allylation depending on external additives. The coordination structure had a dramatic influence on the electronic and steric environments around the Ge center, enabling the geometrically controlled allylation of aldehydes.

Tetrylones: An Intriguing Class of Monoatomic Zero-valent Group 14 Compounds

Tetrylones (ylidones) represent a class of zero-valent group 14 compounds with the general formula EL₂ (E=C, Si, Ge, Sn, or Pb; L=neutral σ-donating ligand), wherein the tetrel atom, E(0), possess its four valence electrons in the form of two electron lone pairs, and is moreover coordinated by two ligands (L) via donor-acceptor interactions (L→E←L). This review focuses on the synthesis, structure, reactivity, and computational examination of the isolable heavier tetrylones (Si, Ge, Sn) that have been discovered recently. A comprehensive review on carbone chemistry is beyond the scope of this review. It should also be noted that tetrylones contain two different types of lone pairs, that is, one that exhibits p-type and one that exhibits s-type characteristics. Different behavior should thus be expected when these lone pairs react with Lewis acids.

Reductive Elimination of Hydrogen from Bis(trimethylsilyl)methyltin Trihydride and Mesityltin Trihydride

Alkyltin trihydride [(Me₃ Si)₂ CHSnH₃ ] was synthesized and the reductive elimination of hydrogen from this species was investigated. A methyl-substituted N-heterocyclic carbene reacts with the organotrihydride in dependence on stoichiometry and solvent to give a series of products of the reductive elimination and dehydrogenative tin-tin bond formation. Besides characterization of the carbene adduct of the alkyltin(II) hydride, a Sn₄ chain was also isolated, encompassing two stannyl-stannylene sites, which are stabilized each as NHC-adducts. Complete dehydrogenation resulted to give either a carbene-stabilized distannyne or a metalloid Sn₉ -cluster salt. Reductive elimination of hydrogen was also achieved with an excess of diethylmethylamine to give the alkyltin(II) hydride as a Lewis base free tetramer [(RSnH)₄ ]. The method of cluster formation at low temperatures by hydrogen elimination was also transferred to the mesityl-substituted tin trihydride MesSnH₃ . In this case [(MesSn)₁₀ ], showing a [5]prismane structure, was isolated in good yield and characterized. NMR spectroscopic features of the propellane-type cluster [Trip₆ Sn₆ ] are reported.
