Controlled Ring‐Opening Polymerization of O ‐Carboxyanhydrides Using a β‐Diiminate Zinc Catalyst

Advancing the Development of Recyclable Aromatic Polyesters by Functionalization and Stereocomplexation

The development of innovative synthetic polymer systems to overcome the trade-offs between the polymer's depolymerizability and performance properties is in high demand for advanced material applications and sustainable development. In this contribution, we prepared a class of aromatic cyclic esters (M1-M5) from thiosalicylic acid and epoxides by facile one-pot synthesis. Ring-opening polymerization of Ms afforded aromatic polyesters P(M)s with high molecular weights and narrow dispersities. The physical and mechanical properties of P(M)s can be modulated by stereocomplexation and regulation of the side-chain flexibility of the polymers, ultimately achieving high-performance properties such as high thermal stability and crystallinity (T_m up to 209 °C), as well as polyolefin-like high mechanical strength, ductility, and toughness. Furthermore, the functionalizable moieties of P(M)s have driven a wide array of post-polymerization modifications toward access to value-added materials. More importantly, the P(M)s were able to selectively depolymerize into monomers in excellent yields, thus establishing its circular life cycle.

Switchable Polymerization Organocatalysis: From Monomer Mixtures to Block Copolymers

One-pot production of sequence-controlled block copolymer from mixed monomers is a crucial but rarely reached goal. Using a switchable Lewis-pair organocatalyst, we have accomplished sequence-selective polymerization from a mixture of O-carboxyanhydride (OCA) and epoxide. Polymerization of the OCA monomer occurs first and exclusively because of its exceedingly high polymerizability. When OCA is fully consumed, alternating copolymerization of epoxide and CO₂ liberated in OCA polymerization is triggered from the termini of the first block. The two polymerizations thus occur in tandem, both in chemoselective fashion, so that a sequence-controlled block polymer with up to 99 % CO₂ conversion is furnished in this one-pot protocol. Calculations and experimental results demonstrate a chemoselective and cooperative mechanism, where the high polymerizability of the OCA monomers guarantees exquisite sequence selectivity and the cooperative decarboxylation partly arose from the stabilization effect by triethylborane, which facilitates the smooth transformation of the chain end from carbonate to alkoxide.

Facile Synthesis of Unimodal Polymethacrylates with Narrow Dispersity via NIR LED Light-Controlled Bromine-Iodine Transformation Reversible-Deactivation Radical Polymerization

A facile and clean strategy for synthesizing unimodal polymethacrylates with narrow dispersity (Đ < 1.10) is successfully developed by a near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diode (LED) light (λ_max = 740 nm)-controlled in situ bromine-iodine transformation reversible-deactivation radical polymerization system without the use of NIR dyes and expensive catalysts. In this system, alkyl iodide ethyl α-iodophenylacetate (EIPA) initiator is generated in situ by the nucleophilic substitution reaction between an alkyl bromide compound ethyl α-bromophenylacetate and sodium iodide (NaI). At the same time, excessive NaI is also acted as a highly active catalyst by forming halogen bonds with terminal iodine of the polymer chains in this system to make it capable of precisely synthesizing polymethacrylates with narrow dispersities (Đ = 1.03-1.10). In addition, the strong penetration ability of NIR LED light is illustrated by the successful polymerization even through 11 pieces of A4 paper.

Monomer Controlled Switchable Copolymerization: A Feasible Route for the Functionalization of Poly(lactide)

Switchable polymerization is an attractive strategy to enable the sequential selectivity of multi-block polyesters. Besides, these well-defined multi-block polyesters could enable further modification for wider applications. Herein, based on the reversible insertion of CO₂ by Salen-Mn^III , a new monomer controlled self-switchable polymerization route was developed. Chemoselective ring opening copolymerization of O-carboxyanhydrides (OCAs) and lactide (LA) was explored without cocatalyst. The sequential conversion of OCAs and LA into the polymer chain could form multi-block polyesters. Based on this strategy, a series of multi-block polyesters with different pendant groups were synthesized. Furthermore, by modifying the propargyl-containing copolymers with quaternary ammonium groups, we have realized antibacterial functionalization of PLA. These results imply the potential application of this strategy for the fabrication of functional polymers for biomedical applications.

Exploiting poly(α-hydroxy acids) for the acid-mediated release of doxorubicin and reversible inside-out nanoparticle self-assembly

Biodegradable poly(α-hydroxy acid) copolyesters consisting of benzyl-protected glutamic acid and carboxybenzyl-protected lysine derived blocks possess the capability to self-assemble to form stable nanoparticles in aqueous solution (pH 7.4), that are able to withhold doxorubicin, prior to its directed release in acidic solution. Such pH-responsive nanoparticles are non-toxic against a panel of human breast cancer cell lines, but demonstrated comparable toxicities to free doxorubicin when loaded with doxorubicin. Significantly, comparable efficacy to free doxorubicin was observed even against triple negative breast cancer cells, highlighting the potential of the materials generated as drug delivery vehicles for cancer treatment. Facile block copolymer deprotection resulted in a polymer that presents an altered self-assembly/disassembly profile; forming nanoparticles when stored in either acidic or alkaline solution, but undergoing self-disassembly when added to aqueous solution of pH 7.4. This second polymer highlights the considerable versatility that poly(α-hydroxy acids) inherently possess.
