Poly(ionic liquid)-Mediated Morphogenesis of Bismuth Sulfide with a Tunable Band Gap and Enhanced Electrocatalytic Properties

Synthesis of a Novel Spherical-Shell-Structure Polymerized Ionic Liquid Microsphere PILM/Au/Al(OH)3 Catalyst for Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation

In order to selectively oxidize benzyl alcohol, a novel noble metal catalyst based on polymer ionic liquids with a core-shell structure was created. First, polymer ionic liquid microspheres (PILMs) were prepared by free radical polymerization. Second, the in situ adsorption of Au nanoparticles on the surface of PILMs was accomplished, thanks to the strong electrostatic interaction between N atoms and metal ions on the diazole ring of PILMs. Additionally, the introduction of Al(OH)₃ prevented the aggregation of Au nanoparticles and promoted the catalytic reaction. Finally, the PILM/Au/Al(OH)₃ catalyst with a core-shell structure was formed. The effectiveness of the PILM/Au/Al(OH)₃ catalyst was assessed by varying the catalyst's type, quantity, amount of Au, amount of H₂O₂, temperature, and reaction time. After five cycles of experiments, the catalyst was effective and reusable. In addition, the potential catalytic mechanism of the catalyst in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol was proposed.

Microwave-assisted fabrication of g-C3N4 nanosheets sustained Bi2S3 heterojunction composites for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol

In this work, we report a stable g-C₃N₄, Bi₂S₃, and g-C₃N₄/Bi₂S₃ composite catalysts were prepared via a facile one-pot microwave-assisted method and characterized. The orthorhombic phase and nearly spherical shape of the particles with an average diameter of 5-25 nm of g-C₃N₄/Bi₂S₃ composite were obtained from XRD and TEM. The composite also exhibits a high surface area (32.15 m²/g), which may provide convenient transportation and diffusion for substrate molecule. The optical studies were displayed the g-C₃N₄/Bi₂S₃ composite has a sharp absorption band in the visible region, higher charge separation, and reduced recombination rate. These results show that the Bi₂S₃ NPs have good crystallinity and are uniformly deposited on the surface of the g-C₃N₄ sheet. The catalytic performance of the g-C₃N₄/Bi₂S₃ composite for the reduction of 4-NP to 4-AP was exhibited approximately 100%, which is 1.48 and 2.34 times higher than the Bi₂S₃ and g-C₃N₄ catalysts, respectively. The pseudo-first-order rate constant was estimated as 1.648 × 10 ^-2 min^-1 for the reduction of 4-NP using g-C₃N₄/Bi₂S₃ composite in 1 h reaction time. The effect of catalyst dosage (0-30 mg) was also investigated for the reduction of 4-NP using g-C₃N₄/Bi₂S₃ composite catalyst. Moreover, the reusability of the g-C₃N₄/Bi₂S₃ composite was exhibited a better reduction of the 4-NP even after 5 cycles and it was found that 8% reduction in the initial reduction rate. The obtained results from this study show that g-C₃N₄/Bi₂S₃ composite has the potential efficiency and stability to make it an ideal catalyst for the reduction of toxic effluents and wastewater treatment.

Enhanced photoelectrochemical sensing based on novel synthesized Bi2S3@Bi2O3 nanosheet heterostructure for ultrasensitive determination of L-cysteine

The design of a low-cost and highly efficient photoactive heterojunction material for sensing is still a challenging issue. On the basis of the formation of sheet-like Bi₂O₃ via coating Bi₂S₃, a novel Bi₂O₃@Bi₂S₃ heterostructure is controllably synthesized via a facile water bath approach. The prepared Bi₂O₃@Bi₂S₃ nanosheets show a superior photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance for the detection of L-cysteine (L-Cys), and the photocurrent signal is three and four times higher than those of Bi₂S₃ and Bi₂O₃ under visible irradiation, respectively. Also, the heterostructure presents an outstanding linear range for the detection of L-Cys: 0.1-10,000 μM. In addition, the mechanism of improved PEC response of Bi₂O₃@Bi₂S₃ nanosheets is investigated according to the estimated energy band positions. Thus, the integration of the novel heterostructure and the photoelectrochemical technique demonstrates a rapid photocurrent response, showing a great effect on the performance of the sensing system and a new PEC method for highly selective and sensitive chemical detection. Cobalt-Bridged Ionic Liquid Polymer on a Carbon Nanotube for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity

By taking inspiration from the catalytic properties of single-site catalysts and the enhancement of performance through ionic liquids on metal catalysts, we exploited a scalable way to place single cobalt ions on a carbon-nanotube surface bridged by polymerized ionic liquid. Single dispersed cobalt ions coordinated by ionic liquid are used as heterogeneous catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Performance data reveals high activity and stable operation without chemical instability.

Heterostructured Bi2S3-Bi2O3 Nanosheets with a Built-In Electric Field for Improved Sodium Storage

Constructing novel heterostructures has great potential in tuning the physical/chemical properties of functional materials for electronics, catalysis, as well as energy conversion and storage. In this work, heterostructured Bi₂S₃-Bi₂O₃ nanosheets (BS-BO) have been prepared through an easy water-bath approach. The formation of such unique BS-BO heterostructures was achieved through a controllable thioacetamide-directed surfactant-assisted reaction process. Bi₂O₃ sheets and Bi₂S₃ sheets can be also prepared through simply modifying the synthetic recipe. When employed as the sodium-ion battery anode material, the resultant BS-BO displays a reversible capacity of ∼630 mA h g^-1 at 100 mA g^-1. In addition, the BS-BO demonstrates improved rate capability and enhanced cycle stability compared to its Bi₂O₃ sheets and Bi₂S₃ sheets counterparts. The improved electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the built-in electric field in the BS-BO heterostructure, which effectively facilitates the charge transport. This work would shed light on the construction of novel heterostructures for high-performance sodium-ion batteries and other energy-related devices.

Pyrite-Type Nanomaterials for Advanced Electrocatalysis

Since being proposed by John Bockris in 1970, hydrogen economy has emerged as a very promising alternative to the current hydrocarbon economy. Access to reliable and affordable hydrogen economy, however, requires cost-effective and highly efficient electrocatalytic materials that replace noble metals (e.g., Pt, Ir, Ru) to negotiate electrode processes such as oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Although substantial advances in the development of inexpensive catalysts, successful deployment of these materials in fuel cells and electrolyzers will depend on their improved activity and robustness. Recent research has demonstrated that the nanostructuring of Earth-abundant minerals provides access to newly advanced energy materials, particularly for nanostructured pyrites, which are attracting great interest. Crystalline pyrites commonly contain the characteristic dianion units and have cations occurring in octahedral coordination-whose generalized formula is MX₂, where M can be transition metal of groups 8-12 and X is a chalcogen. The diversity of pyrites that are accessible and their versatile and tunable properties make them attractive for a wide range of applications from photovoltaics to energy storage and electrocatalysis. Pyrite-type structures can be further extended to their ternary analogues, for example, CoAsS (cobaltite), NiAsS (gersdorffite), NiSbS (ullmannite), CoPS, and many others. Moreover, improved properties of pyrites can be realized through grafting them with promoter objects (e.g., metal oxides, metal chalcogenides, noble metals, and carbons), which bring favorable interfaces and structural and electronic modulations, thus leading to performance gains. In recent years, research on the synthesis of pyrite nanomaterials and on related structure understanding has dramatically advanced their applications, which offers new perspectives in the search for efficient and robust electrocatalysts, yet a focused review that concentrates the critical developments is still missing. In this Account, we describe our recent progress on the discoveries and applications of nanostructured pyrite-type materials in the area of electrocatalysis. We first briefly highlight some interesting properties of pyrite-type materials and why they are attractive for modern electrocatalysis. Some recent advances on their synthesis that allows access to highly nanostructured pyrite-type materials are reviewed, along with the grafting of resultant pyrites with foreign materials (e.g., metal oxides, metal chalcogenides, noble metals, and carbons) to enable improved catalytic performances. We finally spotlight the exciting examples where pyrite nanostructures were used as efficient electrocatalysts to drive the OER, HER, and methanol-tolerant ORR. It is reasonable to assume that, with significant efforts and focus, the next few years will bring new advances on the pyrites and other minerals for electrocatalysis.
