Non-Topotactic Transformation of Silicate Nanolayers into Mesostructured MFI Zeolite Frameworks During Crystallization

Indirectly Detected DNP-Enhanced 17 O NMR Spectroscopy: Observation of Non-Protonated Near-Surface Oxygen at Naturally Abundant Silica and Silica-Alumina

Recent studies have shown that dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) can be used to detect ¹⁷ O solid-state NMR spectra of naturally abundant samples within a reasonable experimental time. Observations using indirect DNP, which relies on ¹ H mediation in transferring electron hyperpolarization to ¹⁷ O, are currently limited mostly to hydroxyls. Direct DNP schemes can hyperpolarize non-protonated oxygen near the radicals; however, they generally offer much lower signal enhancements. In this study, we demonstrate the detection of signals from non-protonated ¹⁷ O in materials containing silicon. The sensitivity boost that made the experiment possible originates from three sources: indirect DNP excitation of ²⁹ Si via protons, indirect detection of ¹⁷ O through ²⁹ Si nuclei using two-dimensional ²⁹ Si{¹⁷ O} D-HMQC, and Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill refocusing of ²⁹ Si magnetization during acquisition. This ²⁹ Si-detected scheme enabled, for the first time, 2D ¹⁷ O-²⁹ Si heteronuclear correlation spectroscopy in mesoporous silica and silica-alumina surfaces at natural abundance. In contrast to the silanols showing motion-averaged ¹⁷ O signals, the framework oxygens exhibit unperturbed powder patterns as unambiguous fingerprints of surface sites. Along with hydroxyl oxygens, detection of these moieties will help in gaining more atomistic-scale insights into surface chemistry.

Removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from waste air stream using ozone assisted zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles coated on zeolite

The release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from stationary and mobile sources increases the concentration of these pollutants in the environment. These compounds have the potential to cause adverse effects on human health and the environment. The adoption of management and engineering procedures to control the emission of these pollutants to the air has become essential. The aim of this study was to use an advanced oxidation process namely the catalytic ozonation to reduce the concentration of these pollutants in industrial output. In this experimental study, the catalytic ozonation process in the presence of ZnO nanoparticles coated on zeolite media was used in a laboratory scale to treat the air contaminated with BTEX compounds as indicators of VOCs. For this purpose, First the nanocomposites were synthesized based on chemical co-precipitation method. SEM, XRD, BET and FT-IR analyses were performed to investigate the characteristics of nanocomposites. The variables including initial concentrations of BTEX (50-200 ppm), polluted air flow rate (5-20 l/h), humidity (0-75%) and ozone dose (0.25-1 g/h) were investigated. The concentration of BTEX compounds was measured by the Gas Chromatography (GC) technique according to the NIOSH 1501 manual. The results of SEM, XRD, BET and FT-IR analyses showed the proper synthesis of nanocomposites. According to the laboratory results, the optimal conditions of the process were found to be as follows: the initial concentration of pollutants equal to 50 ppm, inlet air flow rate of 5 l/h, relative air humidity of 25-35%, and inlet ozone concentration equal to 1 g/h. Under these conditions, the removal efficiency of the compounds: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene were obtained 98, 96, 92 and 91%, respectively. Simple ozonation and adsorption processes were less efficient than catalytic ozonation. This process had the ability to reduce the concentration of BTEX compounds to standard level.

Molecular level nucleation mechanisms of hierarchical MFI and MOR zeolite structures via non-stochastic pathways

Understanding the chemical mechanism of crystal nucleation at the molecular level is crucial for the design of architectural structures of valuable materials in the future. In this study, it has been revealed that amorphous silicate precursors, which play a role in the nucleation processes of zeolitic frameworks, can be regularly fragmented in mass spectroscopy due to the hydroxyl functional groups in their molecular structures. In this way, by using the mass spectra acquired from LDI-TOF MS, the systematic evolution stages of a common 1D precursor converting to the 3D unit cells of MFI and MOR zeolite structures observed in the same reaction medium were constructed through a nucleation mechanism at the molecular level for the first time. Here we show a novel nucleation pathway that does not occur via stochastic assembly of atoms or distinct building blocks by molecular recognition. Each of the proposed nucleation mechanisms of these different frameworks carrying structural similarities is from different combinations of sequential self-attaching intramolecular covalent couplings of identical origin precursors. The dynamic molecular structure capable of forming finite building units of target frameworks during the nucleation process of this precursor, which is the polymerized form of simple 6-membered siloxane chains, has been arranged around structure directing agents before a hydrothermal reaction.
