Copper(I)-Catalyzed Chemoselective Coupling of Cyclopropanols with Diazoesters: Ring-Opening C−C Bond Formations

Palladium-Catalyzed Stagewise Strain-Release-Driven C-C Activation of Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanyl Alcohols

A palladium-catalyzed chemoselective coupling of readily available bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanyl alcohols (BCP-OH) with various halides is reported, which offers expedient approaches to a wide range of cyclobutanone and β,γ-enone skeletons via single or double C-C activation. The chemistry shows a broad substrate scope in terms of both the range of BCP-OH and halides including a series of natural product derivatives. Moreover, dependency of reaction chemodivergence on base additive has been investigated through experimental and density functional theory (DFT) studies, which is expected to significantly enrich the reaction modes and increase the synthetic potential of BCP-OH in preparing more complex molecules.

Three-Component Reaction for the Synthesis of Highly Functionalized Propargyl Ethers

Multicomponent reactions provide efficient means to access molecular complexity. Herein, we report a copper-catalyzed three-component reaction of diazo compounds, alcohols and ethynyl benziodoxole (EBX) reagents for the synthesis of propargyl ethers. Extensive variations of the three partners of the reaction is possible, leading to highly functionalized and structurally diverse products under mild conditions. Alkynylation of a copper ylide intermediate is postulated as key step for this transformation.

Blue Light-promoted Carbene Transfer Reactions of Tosylhydrazones

Metal-free photochemical carbene-transfer reactions of tosylhydrazones were developed under blue light irradiation at room temperature. This reaction constructs C-X (X=C, N, O, S) bonds and cyclopropanes from readily available and stable starting materials.

A silver-catalyzed radical ring-opening reaction of cyclopropanols with sulfonyl oxime ethers

A silver-catalyzed ring-opening reaction of cyclopropanols with sulfonyl oxime ethers has been developed. The protocol was conducted under mild reaction conditions to provide a series of γ-keto oxime ethers with moderate to good yields. The reaction proceeded in a stereoselective manner for CF3-containing oxime ethers to provide a single stereoisomer, while an inseparable E and Z mixture was obtained for CN-containing oxime ethers. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction proceeded via a radical mechanism.

Computational Investigation of the Selective Cleavage of Diastereotopic Cyclopropane Bonds in 5-Spirocyclopropane Isoxazolidines Rearrangement

The complete path of the Brandi-Guarna rearrangement of 5-spirocyclopropane isoxazolidines has been investigated by means of density functional theory calculations to rationalize the competing formation of tetrahydropyridones and enaminones by the determination of the minimum energy reaction paths. Our calculations confirm that the rearrangement is triggered by the homolysis of the isoxazolidine N-O bond followed by cleavage of one of the two C-CH₂ cyclopropane bonds as previously proposed by the Fabian group [ Eur. J. Org. Chem. 2001, 2001, 4223]. In addition, the results of this work suggest that in the presence of a stereogenic center at isoxazolidine C-4', the formation of a piperidinone or an enaminone as the final product depends on which of the two diastereotopic C-CH₂ bonds of cyclopropane is cleaved in the second step of the process. The result can be of great interest for the understanding of other processes involving the opening of a cyclopropane ring.
