Abstract
Macrocyclic conformations play a crucial role in regulating their properties. Our understanding of the determinants to control macrocyclic conformation interconversion is still in its infancy. Here we present a macrocycle, octamethyl cyclo[4](1,3-(4,6)-dimethylbenzene)[4]((4,6-benzene)(1,3-dicarboxylate) (OC-4), that can exist at 298 K as two stable atropisomers with C2v and C4v symmetry denoted as C2v-OC-4 and C4v-OC-4, respectively. Heating induces the efficient stepwise conversion of C2v- to C4v-OC-4 via a Cs-symmetric intermediate (Cs-OC-4). It differs from the typical transition state-mediated processes of simple C-C single bond rotations. Hydrolysis and further esterification with a countercation dependence promote the generation of C2v- and Cs-OC-4 from C4v-OC-4. In contrast to C2v-OC-4, C4v-OC-4 can bind linear guests to form pseudo-rotaxans, or bind C60 or C70 efficiently. The present study highlights the differences in recognition behavior that can result from conformational interconversion, as well as providing insights into the basic parameters that govern coupled molecular rotations.

Abstract
Due to the highly symmetrical structures generated from one-pot syntheses, the partial functionalization of macrocycles is usually beset with low yields and onerous purifications of the target multifunctional macrocycles. To improve this circumstance, taking pillar[6]arenes as an example, a two-step fragment coupling method is developed for synthesizing symmetrically tetra-functionalized pillar[6]arenes, namely X-pillar[6]arenes. This method is simple and versatile, which makes hetero-fragment coupling and pre-functionalization available. Nine new macrocycles and a pillar[6]arene-based cage are prepared. In addition, one of the newly synthesized macrocycles, COOEtEtXP[6] , exhibits a strong cyan luminescence in the solid state under irradiation by 365 nm UV light. This emission originates from intramolecular through-space conjugation. Meanwhile, formation of a supramolecular polymer by multiple non-covalent intra/intermolecular interactions help rigidify the structure and make COOEtEtXP[6] an efficient solid-state emitter. It is believed that this fragment coupling can also be used to realize the multi-functionalization of other macrocycles.

Abstract
Structural designs combining cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) backbone with planar chiral [2.2]Paracyclophane ([2.2]PCP) lead to optical-active chiral macrocycles with intriguing properties. X-ray crystal analysis revealed aesthetic necklace-shaped structures and size-dependent packages with long-range channels. The macrocycles exhibit unique photophysical properties with high fluorescence quantum yield of up to 82%, and the fluorescent color varies with ring size. In addition, size-dependent chiroptical properties with moderately large CPL dissymmetry factor of 10 -3 and CPL brightness in the range of 30 - 40 M -1 cm -1 were observed.

Abstract
"Chirality" governs many fundamental properties in chemistry and biochemistry. While early investigations on stereochemistry are primarily dedicated to static chirality, there is an increasing interest in the field of dynamic chirality (chiral switches). These chiral switches are essential in controlling the directionality in molecular motors. Dynamic chiralities are equally crucial in switchable stereoselectivity, switchable asymmetric catalysis and enantioselective separation. Herein, we limit our discussion to recent advances on stimuli-induced chiroptical switching of axial, helical, and planar chirality in response to external stimuli. We also discuss a few examples of applications of the switchable chirality.

Abstract
Herein, we report the precise synthesis of a 3D highly strained all-phenylene bismacrocycle, termed conjoined (1,4)[10]cycloparaphenylenophane (SCPP[10]). This structure consists of a twisted benzene ring which is bridged twice by phenylene units anchored in two para-positions. The conjoined structure of SCPP[10] was confirmed in real space at the atomic scale by scanning tunneling microscopy. Theoretical calculations indicate that this bismacrocycle has a very high strain energy of 110.59 kcal mol-1 and the largest interphenylene torsion angle of 46.07° caused by multiple repulsive interactions. Furthermore, a 1:2 host-guest complex of SCPP[10] and [6,6]-phenyl-C61 -butyric acid methyl ester was investigated, which represents the first peanut-shaped 1:2 host-guest complex based on bismacrocycles.

Abstract
A new and simple strategy towards electric-field-driven multiple chirality switching device has been designed and fabricated by combining a newly synthesized base-responsive chiroptical polymer switch (R-FLMA) and p-benzoquinone (p-BQ) via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. Clear and stable triple chirality states (silence, positive, negative) of this device in visible band can be regulated reversibly (>1000 cycles) by adjusting voltage programs. Furthermore, such chiral switching phenomena are also accompanied by apparent changes of color and fluorescence. More importantly, the potential application of this device for a spatial light modulator has also been demonstrated.

Abstract
A new type of macrocyclic arenes, named pagoda[4]arene (P4) and i-pagoda[4]arene (i-P4), were conveniently synthesized by the TFA-catalyzed one-pot condensation of 2,6-dimethoxylanthracene and paraformaldehyde in dichloromethane at room temperature. P4 and i-P4 showed unique square pagoda structures and fixed conformations in solution and also exhibited strong blue fluorescence. Moreover, P4 and i-P4 with deep and rich-electron cavities could not only encapsulate n-hexane and one or two dichloromethane molecules in the solid state but also showed strong binding abilities toward neutral dinitriles with different chain lengths and various nitrogen-containing heterocyclic salts to form 1:1 stable host-guest complexes in both solution and the solid state. In particular, it was also found that with the increase in the alkyl chain length of the dinitriles, the association constants for their complexes with both P4 and i-P4 were markedly increased from glutaronitrile to octanedinitrile as a result of the deep cavities of the macrocycles and multiple intermolecular interactions. Since P4 and i-P4 had stable planar chirality, their efficient resolutions were further achieved by HPLC with a chiral column. Interestingly, the two enantiomers showed mirror-imaged CD signals and excellent CPL properties, which could allow them to have potential applications in chiral luminescent materials.

Abstract
The contradiction between the rising demands of optical chirality sensing and the failure in chiral detection of cryptochiral compounds encourages researchers to find new methods for chirality amplification. Inspired by planar chirality and the host-guest recognition of pillararenes, we establish a new concept for amplifying CD signals of cryptochiral molecules by pillararene host-guest complexation induced chirality amplification. The planar chirality of pillararenes is induced and stabilized in the presence of the chiral guest, which makes the cryptochiral molecule detectable by CD spectroscopy. Several chiral guests are selected in these experiments and the mechanism of chiral amplification is studied with a non-rotatable pillararene derivative and density functional theory calculations. We believe this work affords deeper understanding of chirality and provides a new perspective for chiral sensing.

Abstract
A chiral electrochemically responsive molecular universal joint (EMUJ) was synthesized by fusing a macrocyclic pillar[6]arene (P[6]) to a ferrocene-based side ring. A single crystal of an enantiopure EMUJ was successfully obtained, which allowed, for the first time, the definitive correlation between the absolute configuration and the circular dichroism spectrum of a P[6] derivative to be determined. The self-inclusion and self-exclusion conformational change of the EMUJ led to a chiroptical inversion of the P[6] moiety, which could be manipulated by both solvents and changes in temperature. The EMUJ also displayed a unique redox-triggered reversible in/out conformational switching, corresponding to an occupation/voidance switching of the P[6] cavity, respectively. This phenomenon is an unprecedented electrochemical manipulation of the capture and release of guest molecules by supramolecular hosts.

Abstract
Three chiral bicyclic pillar[5]arene derivatives termed as molecular universal joints (MUJs), were synthesized and separated enantiomerically. These MUJs showed temperature-driven chirality switching in certain solvents. Herein, it is demonstrated that temperature-driven chirality switching could also be realized by mixing two miscible organic solvents, in each of which chirality inversion is not accomplishable. Additionally, solvent mixing drastically varied the inversion temperature of the MUJs, for example, from far below zero to room temperature. Moreover, the temperature-driven Sp /Rp to Rp /Sp chirality switching direction could be reversed by the solvent mixing and it was critically controlled by the mixing ratios of the two solvents. These observations allowed precise manipulation of the chirality switching behavior of the MUJs. Such a chirality switching was ascribed to the influences of solvent and temperature on the in-out equilibrium of the side rings, which is delicately controlled by several processes, including the solvation/desolvation and the inclusion/exclusion of the side rings and solvent molecules. Crucially, the solvent mixing introduced new supramolecular processes, in particular the desolvation of solvent molecules from the mixed solvent system and the solvation of the side ring by the mixed solvent, which significantly disturbed the original in-out equilibrium of MUJs and drastically switched the entropy and enthalpy changes of conformational interconversion.

Abstract
Planar chirality inversion of pillar[5]arenes bearing d- or l-alanine substituents on both rims was investigated upon addition of guest molecules having pyridinium or imidazole moieties and long alkyl chains. The d- and l-alanine-substituted pillar[5]arenes exhibited pS and pR planar chirality, respectively. However, this planar chirality was inverted upon inclusion of certain achiral molecules, comprising pyridinium or imidazole moieties and long alkyl chains with terminal hydroxyl or methyl groups.

Abstract
Some biological receptors change their shapes and rigidity by metalation to recognize substrates precisely via adaptive guest binding process. Herein we present a semi-flexible tricyclic host molecule whose conformation is rigidified by dimetalation to uptake organic guests selectively. Considering two metal binding sites and an empty space between them, pillar[5]-bis-thiacrown (L) was synthesized. The tricyclic host L forms a disilver(I) complex [Ag2 L(NO3 )2 ], with an Ag⋅⋅⋅Ag separation of 9.976 Å. Binding studies based on 1 H NMR including 2D NOESY and DOSY experiments towards α,ω-dicyanoalkanes [CN(CH2 )n CN, n=2-6, shortly C2-C6] demonstrated that the dimetalated L, Ag2 L preferentially recognizes C2 over other guests than that of free L. Furthermore, the dimetalated the host only uptakes C2 in the presence of other guests. Crystal structures support the idea that the space between two silver(I) centers plays a decisive role on the selective guest binding forming an Ag-C2-Ag@L arrangement via the length-selective recognition. This work demonstrates the chemical example of the adaptive guest binding and presents a new perspective on the metallosupramolecules of pillararenes.
