In Situ Synthesis of a Supramolecular Hydrogelator at an Oil/Water Interface for Stabilization and Stimuli-Induced Fusion of Microdroplets

Hybrid Hydrogels from Nongelling Polymers Using a Fibrous Peptide Hydrogelator at Low Concentrations

Nature-made hydrogels typically combine a wide range of multiscale fibers into biological composite networks, which offer an adaptive property. Inspired by nature, we report a facile approach to construct hybrid hydrogels from a range of natural or commercially available synthetic nongelling polymers (e.g., poly(ethylene glycol), poly(acrylic acid), carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal, and sodium alginate) at a concentration as low as 0.53 wt % using a nonionic fibrous peptide hydrogelator. Through simply mixing the peptide hydrogelator with a polymer aqueous solution, stable hybrid hydrogels can be formed with the concentration of hydrogelator at ∼0.05 wt %. The gel strength of the resulting hydrogels can be effectively modulated by the concentration, molecular weight, and terminal group of the polymer. We further demonstrate that the molecular interactions between the peptide hydrogelator and the polymer are very crucial for the formation of hybrid hydrogel, which synergically induce the gelation at considerably low concentrations. A peptide hydrogelator can be easily obtained by aminolysis of alkyl-oilgo(γ-benzyl-l-glutamate) samples. Live/Dead assays indicate low cytotoxicity of the hybrid hydrogel toward HeLa cells. Combining the low-cost, scalable synthesis, and biocompatibility, the prepared peptide hydrogelator presents a potential candidate to expand the scope of polymer hydrogels for biomedical applications and also shows considerable commercial significance.

Interfacial Polymerization: From Chemistry to Functional Materials

Interfacial polymerization, where a chemical reaction is confined at the liquid-liquid or liquid-air interface, exhibits a strong advantage for the controllable fabrication of films, capsules, and fibers for use as separation membranes and electrode materials. Recent developments in technology and polymer chemistry have brought new vigor to interfacial polymerization. Here, we consider the history of interfacial polymerization in terms of the polymerization types: interfacial polycondensation, interfacial polyaddition, interfacial oxidative polymerization, interfacial polycoordination, interfacial supramolecular polymerization, and some others. The accordingly emerging functional materials are highlighted, as well as the challenges and opportunities brought by new technologies for interfacial polymerization. Interfacial polymerization will no doubt keep on developing and producing a series of fascinating functional materials.

Construction of a continuously layered structure of h-BN nanosheets in the liquid phase via sonication-induced gelation to achieve low friction and wear

Herein, to endow h-BN nanosheets with gelling ability, a diurea compound was decorated on the h-BN nanosheets via designed adsorption and in situ reaction processes. The prepared h-BN-based gelator, BTO, exhibited excellent dispersibility in non-polar liquid media, and the gelation of BTO dispersions could be readily triggered by ultrasonic treatments. The sol-gel transformation of the system was found to be highly reversible by stirring and sonication. Based on the investigation on the self-assembly behavior of BTO nanosheets in the liquid phase, it was proposed that a continuous and layered structure formed by BTO during sonication was the key factor for the gelling properties of these nanosheets. The viscoelasticity of the sonication-induced gel was studied using a rheometer. Tribological evaluations show that the prepared h-BN nanogel exhibits outstanding lubricating performances, and more importantly, it has been proved that the gel state of the h-BN nanosheets provides superior and more reliable lubricating performances than the corresponding dispersion state under certain conditions; this can be ascribed to the formation of a continuous and uniform structure of modified h-BN nanosheets during gelation. Thus, this study not only clarifies the key role of the assembly structure in the tribological performances of 2D nanomaterials, but also demonstrates the potential of gelation in improving the macroscopic friction reduction and wear resistance of 2D nanomaterials.
