Supramolecular Nanotubules as a Catalytic Regulator for Palladium Cations: Applications in Selective Catalysis

Triple Thorpe-Ingold Effect in the Synthesis of 18-Membered C3 Symmetric Lactams Stacking as Endless Supramolecular Tubes

Three C₃ symmetric macrolactams were very efficiently cyclized from their linear precursors. Adequately located substituents are responsible for the enhancement of reactivity that is not observed in the unsubstituted parent. DFT calculations show that the properly folded cyclization precursor, the reactive conformer, is more populated than other conformers, leading to a decrease of free energy of activation. The crystal structure of the ring substituted with three very bulky esters indicates that tubular stacking is preserved.

Stimuli-Responsive Transformable Supramolecular Nanotubes

Supramolecular nanotubes produced by self-assembly of organic molecules can have unique structural features such as a one-dimensional morphology with no branching, distinguishable inner and outer surfaces and membrane walls, or a structure that is hollow and has a high aspect ratio. Incorporation of functional groups that respond to external chemical or physical stimuli into the constituent organic molecules of supramolecular nanotubes allows us to drastically change the structure of the nanotubes by applying such stimuli. This ability affords an array of controllable approaches for the encapsulation, storage, and release of guest compounds, which is expected to be useful in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine. In this article, I review the supramolecular nanotubes developed by our group that exhibit morphological transformations in response to pH, chemical reaction, light, temperature, or moisture.

Supramolecular Tubule from Seesaw Shaped Amphiphile and Its Hierarchical Evolution into Sheet

Although supramolecular one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) structures with various unique properties have been extensively studied, the reversible switching between tubules and sheets via lateral association remains challenging. Here, we report the unique structures of a supramolecular tubular bamboo culm in which the hollow-tubular interior is separated, at intervals, by nodes per 1.3 nm. Interestingly, the discrete tubules are able to hierarchically assemble into a flat sheet in response to an aromatic guest. The addition of trans-azobenzene, as a guest, enables the tubules to form a hierarchical sheet assembly via the lateral interaction. The hierarchical sheet structures are disassembled into their constituent tubules upon UV irradiation due to trans-cis isomerization. The recovery from cis-azobenzene to trans-form induces repeatedly the hierarchical sheet assembly, indicative of a reversible switching behavior between tubules and sheets triggered by an external stimulus.

Self-Assembly of Tetraphenylethylene-Based Amphiphiles in Aqueous Methanol Solution into Two-Dimensional Chiral Sheets for Enantioselective Sorption

Most synthetic building blocks self-assemble into one- or three-dimensional architectures. However, fewer examples have been reported on the aggregation of amphiphiles to form optically-active two-dimensional (2D) structures. Herein, we report the self-assembly of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-containing hydrophilic dendrons into 2D sheet structures in aqueous methanol solution. TEM and AFM investigations showed that the self-assembly of disubstituted TPE generates helical nanofibers as an intermediate structure which, in turn, laterally associate into a chiral sheet structure with a thickness of 4.6 nm, whereas tetrasubstituted TPE self-assembles into a nonchiral sheet structure with a thickness of 3.8 nm. In great contrast to the nonchiral sheets, the chiral sheets are able to preferentially absorb the d-enantiomer in a racemic phenylalanine derivative solution accompanied by fluorescence enhancement, thus indicating that the single-layered chiral sheets act as an enantioselective membrane that can be used for fluorescence sensing.

Luminescent Metallacycle-Cored Liquid Crystals Induced by Metal Coordination

Two rhomboidal metallacycles based on metal-coordination-driven self-assembly are presented. Because metal-coordination interactions restrict the rotation of phenyl groups on tetraphenylethene units, these metallacycles were emissive both in solution and in solid state, and their aggregation-induced emission properties were well-retained. Moreover, the rhomboidal metallacyclic structures offer a platform for intermolecular packing beneficial for the formation of liquid crystalline phases. Therefore, although neither of building blocks shows mesogenic properties, both thermotropic and lyotropic (in DMF) mesophases were observed in one of metallacycles, indicating that mesophases could be induced by metal-coordination interactions. This study not only reveals the mechanism for the formation of cavity-cored liquid crystals, but also provides a convenient approach to preparing supramolecular luminescent liquid crystals, which will serve as good candidates for chemo sensors and liquid crystal displays.
