Abstract
Carbon nitride (CNx ) is a light-absorber with excellent performance in photocatalytic suspension systems, but the activity of CNx photoelectrodes has remained low. Here, cyanamide-functionalized CNx (NCN CNx ) was co-deposited with ITO nanoparticles on a 1.8 Å thick alumina-coated FTO electrode. Transient absorption spectroscopy and impedance measurements support that ITO acts as a conductive binder and improves electron extraction from the NCN CNx , whilst the alumina underlayer reduces recombination losses between the ITO and the FTO glass. The Al2 O3 |ITO : NCN CNx film displays a benchmark performance for CNx -based photoanodes with an onset of -0.4 V vs a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and 1.4±0.2 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs RHE during AM1.5G irradiation for the selective oxidation of 4-methylbenzyl alcohol. This assembly strategy will improve the exploration of CNx in fundamental and applied photoelectrochemical (PEC) studies.

Abstract
In spite of the enormous promise that polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) materials hold for various applications, the fabrication of high-quality, binder-free PCN films and electrodes has been a largely elusive goal to date. Here, we tackle this challenge by devising, for the first time, a water-based sol-gel approach that enables facile preparation of thin films based on poly(heptazine imide) (PHI), a polymer belonging to the PCN family. The sol-gel process capitalizes on the use of a water-soluble PHI precursor that allows formation of a non-covalent hydrogel. The hydrogel can be deposited on conductive substrates, resulting in formation of mechanically stable polymeric thin layers. The resulting photoanodes exhibit unprecedented photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance in alcohol reforming and highly selective (∼100 %) conversions with very high photocurrents (>0.25 mA cm-2 under 2 sun) down to <0 V vs. RHE. This enables even effective PEC operation under zero-bias conditions and represents the very first example of a 'soft matter'-based PEC system capable of bias-free photoreforming. The robust binder-free films derived from sol-gel processing of water-soluble PCN thus constitute a new paradigm for high-performance 'soft matter' photoelectrocatalytic systems and pave the way for further applications in which high-quality PCN films are required.

Abstract
Here we report the soft-template-assisted electrochemical deposition of mesoporous semiconductors (CdSe and CdTe). The resulting mesoporous films are stoichiometrically equivalent and contain mesopores homogeneously distributed over the entire surface. To demonstrate the versatility of the method, two block copolymers with different molecular weights are used, yielding films with pores of either 9 or 18 nm diameter. As a proof of concept, the mesoporous CdSe film-based photodetectors show a high sensitivity of 204 mW-1 cm2 at 680 nm wavelength, which is at least two orders of magnitude more sensitive than the bulk counterpart. This work presents a new synthesis route for nanostructured semiconductors with optical band gaps active in the visible spectrum.

Abstract
In recent years, photoelectrocatalysis has been one of the hotspots of research. Graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is one of the few non-metal semiconductors known and has good potential in the field of photocatalysis due to its simple preparation method and visible light effects. In this study, a method for compounding two semiconductor materials, In2S3 and Bi2S3, on the surface of g-C3N4 via a one-step hydrothermal method is reported, and it was found that this resulting material showed remarkable properties. The advantages of this method are as follows: (1) the formation of a heterojunction, which accelerates the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers; (2) a large number of holes and defects on the surface of g-C3N4 are conducive to the nucleation, crystallisation and growth of In2S3 and Bi2S3. Compared with its counterpart catalysts, the CN/In2S3/Bi2S3 composite catalyst has significantly improved performance. Due to its high degree of crystallinity, the adsorption capacity of the catalyst itself is also significantly improved. In addition, the stability of the composite material maintains 90.9% after four cycles of use, and the structure is not damaged. In summary, CN/Bi2S3/In2S3 composite materials are believed to have broad application potential in the treatment of dye wastewater.

Abstract
Heptazine-based conjugated polymeric carbon nitrides (PCNs) are promising metal-free photocatalysts, yet their synthesis is challenging due to the electron-deficiency and insolubility of heptazine units. Indeed, heptazine-containing polymers have only been prepared through nucleophilic substitution with amines by using toxic cyameluric chloride as the starting material. Herein, we report the novel and environmentally friendly method for preparing heptazine-based mesoporous PCNs with hydrazone links formed through a simple Schiff base condensation of melem-NH2 and aldehydes. Unlike cyameluric chloride, melem-NH2 is non-toxic, stable, and can be readily obtained from melem and hydrazine in solution. We demonstrate that the hydrazone linkages and the heptazine units synergistically enhance the photocatalytic activity of PCNs in visible-light-driven aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. In particular, the polymer constructed from melem-NH2 and p-phthalaldehyde shows 17 times more activity than graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ).

Abstract
The photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) represents a promising route for the clean utilization of stranded renewable resources, but poor selectivity resulting from the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous solution limits its practical applicability. In the present contribution a photocatalyst with hydrophobic surfaces was fabricated. It facilitates an efficient three-phase contact of CO2 (gas), H2 O (liquid), and catalyst (solid). Thus, concentrated CO2 molecules in the gas phase contact the catalyst surface directly, and can overcome the mass-transfer limitations of CO2 , inhibit the HER because of lowering proton contacts, and overall enhance the CRR. Even when loaded with platinum nanoparticles, one of the most efficient HER promotion cocatalysts, the three-phase photocatalyst maintains a selectivity of 87.9 %. Overall, three-phase photocatalysis provides a general and reliable method to enhance the competitiveness of the CRR.

Abstract
Graphitic carbon nitride materials (CNs) have emerged as suitable photocatalysts and heterogeneous catalysts for various reactions thanks to their tunable band gap, suitable energy-band position, high stability under harsh chemical conditions, and low cost. However, the utilization of CN in photoelectrochemical (PEC) and photoelectronic devices is still at an early stage owing to the difficulties in depositing high-quality and homogenous CN layer on substrates, its wide band gap, poor charge-separation efficiency, and low electronic conductivity. In this Minireview, we discuss the synthetic pathways for the preparation of various structures of CN on substrates and their underlying photophysical properties and current photoelectrochemical performance. The main challenges for CN incorporation into PEC cell are described, together with possible routes to overcome the standing limitations toward the integration of CN materials in PEC and other photoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Free standing centimeter-long 1D nanostructures are highly attractive for electronic and optoelectronic devices due to their unique photophysical and electrical properties. Here a simple, large-scale synthesis of centimeter-long 1D carbon nitride (CN) needles with tunable photophysical, electric, and catalytic properties is reported. Successful growth of ultralong needles is acquired by the utilization of 1D organic crystal precursors comprised of CN monomers as reactants. Upon calcination at high temperatures, the shape of the starting crystal is fully preserved while the CN composition and porosity, and optical and electrical properties can be easily tuned by tailoring the starting elements ratio and final calcination temperature. The facile manipulation and visualization of the CN needles endow their direct electrical measurements by placing them between two conductive probes. Moreover, the CN needles exhibit good photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production owing to their improved light harvesting properties, high surface area, and advantageous energy bands position. The new growth strategy developed here may open opportunities for a rational design of CN and other metal-free materials with controllable directionality and tunable photophysical and electronic properties, toward their utilization in (photo)electronic devices.
