Resolution of Expanded Porphyrinoids: A Path to Persistent Chirality and Appealing Chiroptical Properties

Chirality is a fundamental characteristic of nature. Expanded porphyrinoids and their analogues offer an attractive platform for delving into the intricacies of chirality. Expanded porphyrinoids comprise pyrrolic macrocycles and related heterocyclic systems. As a class, expanded porphyrinoids are widely recognized for their flexible structural features, nontrivial coordination capabilities, and intriguing optical and electronic properties. With limited exceptions, their inherent conformational flexibility coupled with a low racemization barrier allows for the facile interchange between enantiomers. As a result, achieving the effective chiral resolution of individual enantiomers and the subsequent exploration of their chiroptical properties represents a significant challenge. This review summarizes strategies used to realize the chiral resolution of expanded porphyrinoids and the understanding of intrinsic chiroptical properties that has emerged from these separation efforts. It is our hope that this review will serve not only to codify our current understanding of chiral expanded porphyrinoids, but also inspire advances in the generalized area of chiral functional materials.

Plenates: Anion-Dependent Self-Assembly of the Pyrrole Cage Encapsulating Silver(I) Clusters

The self-assembly of 2,5-diformylpyrrole, tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, and silver(I) yielded, depending on the size and basicity of the anion, new cascade complexes or plenates, that is, cryptates incorporating Ag_n ⁿ⁺ clusters. The nature of the product was counterion-dependent, and its formation was either driven by cascade anion binding or by argentophilic interactions stabilizing the cluster within the cavity. The reaction of plenates with tetrabutylammonium halides resulted in the protonation-coupled replacement of the Ag₃ ³⁺ with anion(s), yielding cascade cryptates.

Kinetic versus Thermodynamic Control Over Multiple Conformations of Di-2,7-naphthihexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1)

Di-2,7-naphthihexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1), a non-aromatic carba-analogue of the hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1), incorporating two built-in 2,7-naphthylene moieties was synthesized as two separate, conformationally locked stereoisomers. Both conformers followed complex protonation pathways involving structurally different species, which can be targeted under kinetic and thermodynamic control. The neutralization of the ultimate dicationic product, accessible from both stereoisomers of the free base, allowed to realize the complex conformational switching cycle involving six structurally different species.

Expanded Carbaporphyrinoids

This Review outlines the progress in the field of synthetic expanded carbaporphyrinoids. The evolution of this topic is demonstrated with expanded porphyrin-inspired systems with a variety of incorporated entities that introduce one or more carbon atoms into the cavity. The discussion starts with platyrins-the macrocycles that were identified as parent molecules of not only the expanded carbaporphyrinoids, but the carbaporphyrinoid class in general. After historic considerations, the plethora of expanded porphyrin-like macrocycles containing N-confused or neo-confused pyrrole motifs and different carbocyclic subunits are presented. Special emphasis is given to applications of expanded carbaporphyrinoids in different areas, including organometallic chemistry, switching systems, or aromaticity, concluding with the demonstration of a covalent cage based on an expanded carbaporphyrinoid.

Synthesis, Structure, and Complexation of an S-Shaped Double Azahelicene with Inner-Edge Nitrogen Atoms

An S-shaped double azahelicene (1) was synthesized in excellent yield by a palladium-catalyzed double dehydrogenative C-H coupling reaction. The stereochemistry of 1 was confirmed to be dl by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Selective formation of dl-1 was attributed to the isomerization of the kinetically controlled product (meso-1) into the more thermodynamically stable dl-1 under the applied reaction conditions. dl-1 can coordinate to palladium(II) in a bidentate trans-chelating fashion, which was confirmed by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) as well as by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance (DR) UV/Vis, and far-infrared (FIR) absorption spectroscopy. Theoretical calculations of palladium complex 16 revealed a weak attractive interaction between palladium and carbon atoms on the central dimethoxynaphthalene core, which could facilitate a disproportionation between a trans-chelating (dl-1)⋅PdCl₂ complex and PdCl₂ to form 16.

Propeller-Shaped Semi-fused Porphyrin Trimers: Molecular-Symmetry-Dependent Chiroptical Response

Triple helicene-like semi-fused trimeric Ni^II porphyrins were constructed by alkyne trimerization of an ethynyl-substituted porphyrin and subsequent three-fold Grignard addition to the formyl groups and acid-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization. The presence of stereogenic sp³ carbons in the central bridge leads to small inter-porphyrin conjugative interactions as was revealed by electrochemical and optical properties. Two diastereomers with stable chiral conformations were optically resolved, and the separated enantiomers displayed considerably intense circular dichroism. Importantly, the chiroptical response of C₃ -symmetric helical isomer (|Δϵ|=830 m^-1  cm^-1 ) is 1.8 times amplified from that of C₁ -symmetric one (|Δϵ|=470 m^-1  cm^-1 ). The observed amplification has been interpreted in terms of different spatial arrangements of the three porphyrins.

Conformation-Dependent Response to the Protonation of Diphenanthrioctaphyrin(1.1.1.0.1.1.1.0): A Route to Pseudorotaxane-Like Structures

Diphenanthrioctaphyrin(1.1.1.0.1.1.1.0), an expanded carbaporphyrinoid incorporating two phenanthrenylene moieties, exists as two separate, yet interconvertible, locked stereoisomers. These species demonstrate complex dynamic behavior upon protonation, consisting in multiple conformational rearrangements and anion-binding events. The formation of one of the final dicationic forms is accompanied by the inclusion of a complex anion(s) within the macrocyclic cavity yielding a pseudorotaxane-like host-guest complex. Protonation with trifluoroacetic or dichloroacetic acids followed by neutralization afforded a conformation-switching cycle, which involves six structurally different species. Analogous acidification with chiral 10-camphorsulfonic acid and subsequent neutralization generated one of the free base stereoisomers with enantiomeric excess. Therefore, it was shown that the simple acid-base chemistry of diphenanthrioctaphyrin can act as stimulus, inducing chirality into the system, allowing for the manipulation of the stereochemical information imprinted into the enantiomers of the macrocycle.

Expanded Porphyrin Contraction: From [22]Triphyrin(6.6.0) to [22]Triphyrin(6.5.0)

An expanded triphyrin containing a bipyrrole moiety and annulene links, namely tetraphenyl-[22]triphyrin(6.5.0), 2, has been synthesized. The synthesis proceeded by a postsynthetic transformation of tetraphenyl-[22]triphyrin(6.6.0), 1, in a metal-free unexpected and unprecedented ring contraction during column chromatography on alumina. The observed transformation, located at the hydrocarbon chain linking the pyrrole units, formally corresponds to a subtraction of one carbon atom from an annulene circuit. In contrast to the flexible substrate 1, the product 2 is conformationally rigid, and capable of chloride anion binding in its protonated form.
