Reversible Multilevel Stimuli-Responsiveness and Multicolor Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Emission Based on a Single-Component System

There are limited reports about the transformation of pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with multilevel stimuli-responsiveness at different RTP emission wavelengths under external stimuli. It is difficult to ensure efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) in different states of a single-component system. This research reports the conversion of the organic single-component small molecule 1,2-bis(4-alkoxyphenyl)ethane-1,2-dione (N-BOX) with multilevel stimuli-responsiveness between high-efficiency blue and yellow RTP by grinding or thermal annealing N-BOX crystals. The RTP emission of N-BOX in the crystalline state was easy to adjust by external stimuli (grinding or thermal annealing) due to its non-compact packing, which led to a phase transition and generated unique multilevel stimuli-responsiveness. In particular, the RTP quantum yield of 7-BOX with multilevel stimuli-responsiveness reached 68.4 %, which provides an opportunity for regulation of smart optical materials based on pure organic RTP.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Zinc-Doped Silica Nanospheres Simultaneously Featuring Stable Fluorescence and Long-Lived Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Fluorescence and phosphorescence are known as two kinds of fundamental optical signals, which have been used for myriad applications. To date, simultaneous activation of stable fluorescence and long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission in the aqueous phase remains a big challenge. We prepare zinc-doped silica nanospheres (Zn@SiNSs) with fluorescence and RTP properties using a facile hydrothermal synthetic strategy. For the as-prepared Zn@SiNSs, the recombination of electrons and holes in defects and defect-stabilized excitons derived from oxygen vacancy/C=N bonds lead to the production of stable fluorescence and long-lived RTP (emission lasting for ≈9 s, quantum yield (QY): ≈33.6 %, RTP lifetime: ≈236 ms). The internal Si-O bonded networks and hydrophilic surface in Zn@SiNSs can reduce nonradiative decay to form self-protective RTP, and also provide high water solubility, excellent pH- and photostability.

Uniform Nanowires Containing a Heterogeneousπ-Conjugated Core of Controlled Length, Composition and Morphology

In this work, it is demonstrated for the first time that heterojunction nanowires, consisting of a gradient and segmented-like heterogeneous π-conjugated core with controllable length, composition and morphology, can be generated by co-self-seeding of oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) (OPV)- and oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene) (OPE)-containing block copolymers in spite of different chain lengths and molecular conformation for OPE and OPV. More importantly, based on the understanding of the formation of heterogeneous core by the co-self-seeding approach, a "heating/cooling" seeded growth route was developed, by which linear and branched heterojunction nanowires containing a segmented heterogeneous π-conjugated core of controlled length, composition and morphology can be obtained. This work provides a versatile platform to generate heterojunction nanowires with excellent controllability in length, composition, and morphology.

Efficient Light-Harvesting Systems with Tunable Emission through Controlled Precipitation in Confined Nanospace

Light harvesting is a key step in photosynthesis but creation of synthetic light-harvesting systems (LHSs) with high efficiencies has been challenging. When donor and acceptor dyes with aggregation-induced emission were trapped within the interior of cross-linked reverse vesicles, LHSs were obtained readily through spontaneous hydrophobically driven aggregation of the dyes in water. Aggregation in the confined nanospace was critical to the energy transfer and the light-harvesting efficiency. The efficiency of the excitation energy transfer (EET) reached 95 % at a donor/acceptor ratio of 100:1 and the energy transfer was clearly visible even at a donor/acceptor ratio of 10 000:1. Multicolor emission was achieved simply by tuning the donor/acceptor feed ratio in the preparation and the quantum yield of white light emission from the system was 0.38, the highest reported for organic materials in water to date.
