Nitrogen Donor Protection for Atomically Precise Metal Nanoclusters

Surface organic ligands are critical in dictating the structures and properties of atomically precise metal nanoclusters. In contrast to the conventionally used thiolate, phosphine and alkynyl ligands, nitrogen donor ligands have not been used in the protection for well-defined metal nanoclusters until recently. This review focuses on recent developments in atomically precise metal nanoclusters stabilized by different types of nitrogen donor ligands, in which the synthesis, total structure determination and various properties are covered. We hope that this review will provide insights into the rational design of N donor-protected metal nanoclusters in terms of structural and functional modulation.

Tertiary Chiral Nanostructures from C-H⋅⋅⋅F Directed Assembly of Chiroptical Superatoms

We report the synthesis and structure of tertiary chiral nanostructures with 100 % optical purity. A novel synthetic strategy, using chiral reducing agent, R and S-BINAPCuBH₄ (BINAP is 2,2'-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl), is developed to access to atomically precise, intrinsically chiral [Au₇ Ag₆ Cu₂ (R- or S-BINAP)₃ (SCH₂ Ph)₆ ]SbF₆ nanoclusters in one-pot synthesis. The clusters represent the first tri-metallic superatoms with inherent chirality and fair stability. Both metal distribution (primary) and ligand arrangement (secondary) of the enantiomers exhibited perfect mirror images, and unprecedentedly, the self-assembly driven by the C-H⋅⋅⋅F interaction between the phenyl groups of the superatom moieties and SbF₆ ^- anions induced the formation of bio-mimic left- and right-handed helices, achieving the tertiary chiral nanostructures. DFT calculations revealed the connections between the molecular details and chiral optical activity.

Robust Gold Nanocluster Protected with Amidinates for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The first all-amidinate-protected gold nanocluster [Au₂₈ (Ph-form)₁₂ ](OTf)₂ (Ph-form=N,N'-diphenylformamidinate) (Au₂₈ ) has been synthesized and structurally resolved. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Au₂₈ has a compact Au₄ @Au₂₄ tetrahedral core-shell structure of T symmetry, which is fully protected by 12 bridging formamidinate ligands. This cluster is quite robust as indicated by the fact that it can stay intact in solution at 80 °C for 6 d. It exhibits excellent catalytic performance for the electroreduction of CO₂ with 96.5 % Faradaic efficiency (FE) at -0.57 V and a maximum TOF of 1731 h^-1 at -0.87 V. Its superior stability is also manifested in the fact that the supported catalyst Au₂₈ /CNTs maintains stable potentials at ca. -0.69 V for 40 h with FE(CO)s>91 %. A superatomic electron configuration of 1S² 1P⁶ 2S² 1D⁴ has been clarified by DFT computations, and the strong gold-ligand binding and geometric shell closure account for the superior stability of Au₂₈ .

Enhanced Surface Ligands Reactivity of Metal Clusters by Bulky Ligands for Controlling Optical and Chiral Properties

Surface ligands play critical roles in determining the surface properties of metal clusters. However, modulating the properties and controlling the surface structure of clusters through surface-capping-agent displacement is challenging. Herein, [Ag₁₄ (SPh(CF₃ )₂ )₁₂ (PPh₃ )₄ (DMF)₄ ] (Ag₁₄ -DMF; DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide), with weakly coordinated DMF ligands on surface silver sites, was synthesized by a mixed-ligands strategy. Owing to the high surface reactivity of Ag₁₄ -DMF, the surface ligands are labile, easily dissociated or exchanged by other ligands. Based on the enhanced surface reactivity, easy modulation of the optical properties of Ag₁₄ by reversible "on-off" DMF ligation was realized. When chiral amines were introduced to as-prepared products, all eight surface ligands were replaced by amines and the racemic Ag₁₄ clusters were converted to optically pure homochiral Ag₁₄ clusters as evidenced by circular dichroism (CD) activity and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). This work provides a new insight into modulation of the optical properties of metal clusters and atomically precise homochiral clusters for specific applications are obtained.

Enriching Structural Diversity of Alkynyl-Protected Gold Nanoclusters with Chlorides

The synthesis and isolation of alkynyl/chloride-protected gold nanoclusters is described. Silica gel column chromatography is effective in isolating gold nanoclusters from the as-synthesized cluster mixture to give the clusters Na[Au₂₅ L₁₈ ] (Au₂₅ ), [HNEt₃ ]₃ [Au₆₇ L₃₂ Cl₄ ] (Au₆₇ ), [HNEt₃ ]₄ [Au₁₀₆ L₄₀ Cl₁₂ ] (Au₁₀₆ ), L=3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)-phenylacetylide. Au₆₇ and Au₁₀₆ are new clusters; the structures were determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Au₆₇ contains a distorted Au₁₈ Marks decahedron shelled by an irregular Au₃₂ and further protected with two V-shaped Au₂ L₃ , 13 linear AuL₂ staples and 4 chlorides. Au₆₇ is the first structurally determined 34e superatomic gold nanocluster. Au₁₀₆ is composed of 106 Au atoms co-protected by alkynyls and chlorides. It has a Au₇₉ kernel, like in Au₁₀₂ (p-MBA)₄₄ . The surface structure of Au₁₀₆ includes 20 linear Au-alkynyl staples, 5 Cl-Au-Cl and 2 Cl-Au motifs. These three gold nanoclusters show size-dependent electrochemical properties.

Assembly-Induced Strong Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Spirocyclic Chiral Silver(I) Clusters

Spirocyclic Ag₉ clusters, as a new form of intrinsically chiral metal clusters, were constructed through vertex-sharing of two in-situ-generated heteroaryl diide-centered metal rings. Such core-peripheral type clusters exhibit versatile photoluminescent and chiroptical behavior under different aggregation conditions. In contrast to a ligand-based fluorescence emission in a diluted solution of the clusters, a solvent polarity-caused assembly gives rise to new cluster-based phosphorous luminescence owing to radiative mode switching and aggregation-induced emission. Assembly of cluster enantiomers leads to micrometer-long helical nanofibers, whose handedness is determined by absolute configuration of individual spirocyclic clusters. Benefiting from exciton couplings of helical arrangements of chelating ligands at molecular and microscopic levels, the assembled film of cluster enantiomers exhibits circularly polarized luminescence with a high anisotropy factor (0.16).

Cations Controlling the Chiral Assembly of Luminescent Atomically Precise Copper(I) Clusters

Chiral assembly and asymmetric synthesis are critically important for the generation of chiral metal clusters with chiroptical activities. Here, a racemic mixture of [K(CH₃ OH)₂ (18-crown-6)]⁺ [Cu₅ (S^t Bu)₆ ]^- (1⋅CH₃ OH) in the chiral space group was prepared, in which the chiral red-emissive anionic [Cu₅ (S^t Bu)₆ ]^- cluster was arranged along a twofold screw axis. Interestingly, the release of the coordinated CH₃ OH of the cationic units turned the chiral 1⋅CH₃ OH crystal into a mesomeric crystal [K(18-crown-6)]⁺ [Cu₅ (S^t Bu)₆ ]^- (1), which has a centrosymmetric space group, by adding symmetry elements of glide and mirror planes through both disordered [Cu₅ (S^t Bu)₆ ]^- units. The switchable chiral/achiral rearrangement of [Cu₅ (S^t Bu)₆ ]^- clusters along with the capture/release of CH₃ OH were concomitant with an intense increase/decrease in luminescence. We also used cationic chiral amino alcohols to induce the chiral assembly of a pair of enantiomers, [d/l-valinol(18-crown-6)]⁺ [Cu₅ (S^t Bu)₆ ]^- (d/l-Cu_5V ), which display impressive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in contrast to the CPL-silent racemic mixture of 1⋅CH₃ OH and mesomeric 1.
