A novel access to phosphanylidene-phosphorane complexes via P-donor substitution and a detailed bonding analysis

Phospha-Wittig reagents such as phosphanylidene-phosphoranes and their transition metal complexes are of great interest as sources of P1 building blocks but the access is still limited. Herein, we describe a new access to phosphanylidene-phosphorane complexes starting from the N-methylimidazole-to-phosphinidene complex adduct. The complexes were studied electrochemically and theoretically, also with respect to their 31P NMR data, and the P-P bonds were evaluated by various DFT-derived descriptors.

An NHC-Mediated Metal-Free Approach towards an NHC-Coordinated Endocyclic Disilene

A convenient metal‐free approach towards an N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC)‐coordinated disilene 2 is described. Compound 2, featuring the disilene incorporated in cyclopolysilane framework, was obtained in good yield and characterized using NMR spectroscopy and X‐ray crystallography. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the reaction mechanism provide a rationale for the observed reactivity and give detailed information on the bonding situation of the base‐stabilized disilene. Compound 2 undergoes thermal or light‐ induced (λ=456 nm) NHC loss, and a dimerization process to give a corresponding dimer with a Si₁₀ skeleton. In order to shed light on the dimerization mechanism, DFT calculations were performed. Moreover, the reactivity of 2 was examined with selected examples of transition metal carbonyl compounds.

Main Group Multiple Bonds for Bond Activations and Catalysis

Since the discovery that the so-called "double-bond" rule could be broken, the field of molecular main group multiple bonds has expanded rapidly. With the majority of homodiatomic double and triple bonds realised within the p-block, along with many heterodiatomic combinations, this Minireview examines the reactivity of these compounds with a particular emphasis on small molecule activation. Furthermore, whilst their ability to act as transition metal mimics has been explored, their catalytic behaviour is somewhat limited. This Minireview aims to highlight the potential of these complexes towards catalytic application and their role as synthons in further functionalisations making them a versatile tool for the modern synthetic chemist.

Cascade-Reaction Leading to an Intramolecular [2 + 4] Cycloaddition of a Phenyl Group by a Reactive Ge═Si Double Bond

The reaction of GeCl₂·dioxane with 2 equiv of the thiolate LiSHyp [Hyp = Si(SiMe₃)₃] yields the germanide (12-crown-4)₂Li[Ge(SHyp)₃] (1). A small structural variation in the substituent leads to a completely different result because the reaction of GeCl₂·dioxane with 2 equiv of the thiolate KSHyp^Ph₃ [Hyp^Ph₃ = Si(SiMe₃)₂(SiPh₃)] in toluene yields the unexpected compound [Ph₃Si][Me₃Si]Ge[{(C₆H₅)Ph₂Si}{SiMe₃}₂SiS]Si[SSiMe₃] (2) in high yield. The reaction cascade to give 2 includes several rearrangement reactions and an intramolecular [2 + 4] cycloaddition of a phenyl ring. The syntheses and molecular structures of both compounds are presented, together with quantum-chemical calculations and NMR measurements, to enlighten the reaction mechanism behind the formation of 2.
