A Nitrogen‐Rich 2D sp 2 ‐Carbon‐Linked Conjugated Polymer Framework as a High‐Performance Cathode for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

On-Water Surface Synthesis of Vinylene-Linked Cationic Two-Dimensional Polymer Films as the Anion-Selective Electrode Coating

Vinylene-linked two-dimensional polymers (V-2DPs) and their layer-stacked covalent organic frameworks (V-2D COFs) featuring high in-plane π-conjugation and robust frameworks have emerged as promising candidates for energy-related applications. However, current synthetic approaches are restricted to producing V-2D COF powders that lack processability, impeding their integration into devices, particularly within membrane technologies reliant upon thin films. Herein, we report the novel on-water surface synthesis of vinylene-linked cationic 2DPs films (V-C2DP-1 and V-C2DP-2) via Knoevenagel polycondensation, which serve as the anion-selective electrode coating for highly-reversible and durable zinc-based dual-ion batteries (ZDIBs). Model reactions and theoretical modeling revealed the enhanced reactivity and reversibility of the Knoevenagel reaction on the water surface. On this basis, we demonstrated the on-water surface 2D polycondensation towards V-C2DPs films that show large lateral size, tunable thickness, and high chemical stability. Representatively, V-C2DP-1 presents as a fully crystalline and face-on oriented film with in-plane lattice parameters of a=b≈43.3 Å. Profiting from its well-defined cationic sites, oriented 1D channels, and stable frameworks, V-C2DP-1 film possesses superior bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion (TFSI-)-transport selectivity (transference, t_=0.85) for graphite cathode in high-voltage ZDIBs, thus triggering additional TFSI--intercalation stage and promoting its specific capacity (from ~83 to 124 mAh g-1) and cycling life (>1000 cycles, 95 % capacity retention).

Toward Practical Multivalent Ion Batteries with Quinone-Based Organic Cathodes

Multivalent ion batteries have emerged as promising solutions to meet the future demands of energy storage applications, offering not only high energy density but also diverse socio-economic advantages. Among the various options for cathodes, quinone-based organic compounds have gained attention as suitable active materials for multivalent ion batteries due to their well-aligned ion channels, flexible structures, and competitive electrochemical performance. However, the charge carriers associated with anions that are often exploited in multivalent ion battery systems operate by way of a "non-rocking-chair" mechanism, which requires the use of an excess amount of electrolyte and results in a significant decrease in the energy density. In this review, by categorizing the various charge carriers exploited in previous studies on multivalent ion batteries, we summarize recently reported quinone-based organic cathodes for multivalent ion batteries and emphasize the importance of accurately identifying the charge carriers for calculating the energy density. We also propose potential future directions toward the practical realization of multivalent ion batteries, in link with their efficient energy storage applications.

Facile and Site-Selective Synthesis of an Amine-Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework

Amine-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great potential in diversified applications. However, the synthesis is dominated by postsynthetic modification, while the de novo synthesis allowing for direct installation of amine groups remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we develop a site-selective synthetic strategy for the facile preparation of amine-functionalized hydrazone-linked COF for the first time. A new monomer 2-aminoterephthalohydrazide (NH₂-Th) bearing both amine and hydrazide functionalities is designed to react with benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (Bta). Remarkably, the different activity of amine and hydrazide groups toward aldehyde underpin the highly site-selective synthesis of an unprecedented NH₂-Th-Bta COF with abundant free amine groups anchored in the well-defined pore channels. Interestingly, NH₂-Th-Bta COF exhibits dramatically enhanced iodine uptake capacity (3.58 g g^-1) in comparison to that of the nonfunctionalized Th-Bta COF counterpart (0.68 g g^-1), and many reported porous adsorbents, despite its low specific surface area. Moreover, NH₂-Th-Bta COF possesses exceptional cycling capability and retained high iodine uptake, even after six cycles. This work not only provides a simple and straightforward route for the de novo synthesis of amine-functionalized COFs but also uncovers the great potential of amine-functionalized COFs as adsorbents in the efficient removal of radioiodine and beyond.

Topology-Mediated Enhanced Polaron Coherence in Covalent Organic Frameworks

We employ the Holstein model for polarons to investigate the relationship among defects, topology, Coulomb trapping, and polaron delocalization in covalent organic frameworks (COFs). We find that intrasheet topological connectivity and π-column density can override disorder-induced deep traps and significantly enhance polaron migration by several orders of magnitude in good agreement with recent experimental observations. The combination of percolation networks and micropores makes trigonal COFs ideally suited for charge transport followed by kagome/tetragonal and hexagonal structures. By comparing the polaron spectral signatures and coherence numbers of large three-dimensional frameworks having a maximum of 180 coupled chromophores, we show that controlling nanoscale defects and the location of the counteranion is critical for the design of new COF-based materials yielding higher mobilities. Our analysis establishes design strategies for enhanced conductivity in COFs that can be readily generalized to other classes of conductive materials such as metal-organic frameworks and perovskites.
