Abstract
π-Conjugated chiral nanorings with intriguing electronic structures and chiroptical properties have attracted considerable interests in synthetic chemistry and materials science. We present the design principles to access new chiral macrocycles (1 and 2) that are essentially built on the key components of main-group electron-donating carbazolyl moieties or the π-expanded aza[7]helicenes. Both macrocycles show the unique molecular conformations with a (quasi) figure-of-eight topology as a result of the conjugation patterns of 2,2',7,7'-spirobifluorenyl in 1 and triarylamine-coupled aza[7]helicene-based building blocks in 2. This electronic nature of redox-active, carbazole-rich backbones enabled these macrocycles to be readily oxidized chemically and electrochemically, leading to the sequential production of a series of positively charged polycationic open-shell cyclophanes. Their redox-dependent electronic states of the resulting multispin polyradicals have been characterized by VT-ESR, UV/Vis-NIR absorption and spectroelectrochemical measurements. The singlet (ΔES-T=-1.29 kcal mol-1) and a nearly degenerate singlet-triplet ground state (ΔES-T(calcd)=-0.15 kcal mol-1 and ΔES-T(exp)=0.01 kcal mol-1) were proved for diradical dications 12+2⋅ and 22+2⋅, respectively. Our work provides an experimental proof for the construction of electron-donating new chiral nanorings, and more importantly for highly charged polyradicals with potential applications in chirospintronics and organic conductors.

Abstract
Supramolecular chemistry has received much attention for decades. Macrocyclic architectures as representative receptors play a vital role in supramolecular chemistry and are applied in many fields such as supramolecular assembly and host-guest recognition. However, the classical macrocycles generally lack functional groups in the scaffolds, which limit their further applications, especially in optoelectronic materials. Therefore, developing a new design principle is not only essential to better understand macrocyclic chemistry and the supramolecular behaviors, but also further expand their applications in many research fields. In recent years, the doping compounds with main-group heteroatoms (B, N, S, O, P) into the carbon-based π-conjugated macrocycles offered a new strategy to build macrocyclic architectures with unique optoelectronic properties. In particular, the energy gaps and redox behavior can be effectively tuned by incorporating heteroatoms into the macrocyclic scaffolds. In this Minireview, we briefly summarize the design and synthesis of new macrocycles, and further discuss the related applications in optoelectronic materials and supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract
In this work, nitrogen-annulated perylene (NP) was dimerized into one framework connected by two nitrogen atoms, generating the target molecule of DNP-DA. Owing to the substructure of 1,6-diazecine ten-membered ring, DNP-DA illustrates helical chirality with moderate dissymmetry factor, elevated molecular levels, expanded conjugation and supramolecular interactions with acceptors etc. Notably, DNP-DA represents a limited example of nitrogen-perylene based CPL emitter with glum around 6×10-3 . Intrigued by the facile fabrication via a simple amination-cross coupling sequence and other above advancing features, this work demonstrates the potential generality of utilizing 1,6-diazecine as a chiral unit to build CPL-active materials.

Abstract
Ultralong afterglow emissions due to room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are of paramount importance in the advancement of smart sensors, bioimaging and light-emitting devices. We herein present an efficient approach to achieve rarely accessible phosphorescence of heavy atom-free organoboranes via photochemical switching of sterically tunable fluorescent Lewis pairs (LPs). LPs are widely applied in and well-known for their outstanding performance in catalysis and supramolecular soft materials but have not thus far been exploited to develop photo-responsive RTP materials. The intramolecular LP M1BNM not only shows a dynamic response to thermal treatment due to reversible N→B coordination but crystals of M1BNM also undergo rapid photochromic switching. As a result, unusual emission switching from short-lived fluorescence to long-lived phosphorescence (rad-M1BNM, τRTP =232 ms) is observed. The reported discoveries in the field of Lewis pairs chemistry offer important insights into their structural dynamics, while also pointing to new opportunities for photoactive materials with implications for fast responsive detectors.

Abstract
This study reports the facile syntheses of tetra-boron difluoride (tetra-BF2 ) complexes, flag-hinge-like molecules that exhibit intense green-to-orange luminescence in solution and yellow-to-red emission in the solid states. Single-crystal structure analysis and density functional theory calculations suggested a bent structure of this series of compounds. The complexes also exhibited excellent optical properties, with quantum yields reaching 100 % and a large Stokes shift. These properties were attributed to the altered bending angle of the molecule in the S1 excited state. As the rotational motion was suppressed around the 2,2'-bipyrrole axis, atropisomers with axial chirality were formed, which are optically resolvable into (R) and (S)-enantiomers through a chiral column. The atropisomers thus function as circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials, in which the color (green, green-yellow, and yellow) can be varied by controlling the aggregation state. This rational design of multi-BF2 complexes can potentially realize novel photofunctional materials.

Abstract
Structural designs combining cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) backbone with planar chiral [2.2]Paracyclophane ([2.2]PCP) lead to optical-active chiral macrocycles with intriguing properties. X-ray crystal analysis revealed aesthetic necklace-shaped structures and size-dependent packages with long-range channels. The macrocycles exhibit unique photophysical properties with high fluorescence quantum yield of up to 82%, and the fluorescent color varies with ring size. In addition, size-dependent chiroptical properties with moderately large CPL dissymmetry factor of 10 -3 and CPL brightness in the range of 30 - 40 M -1 cm -1 were observed.

Abstract
Luminescent exciplexes based on a chiral electron donor and achiral acceptors are reported as a new approach to design circularly polarized (CP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. This strategy results in rather high CP luminescence (CPL) values with glum up to 7×10-3 , one order of magnitude higher in comparison to the CPL signal recorded for the chiral donor alone (glum ∼7×10-4 ). This increase occurs concomitantly with a CPL sign inversion, as a result of the strong charge-transfer emission character, as experimentally and theoretically rationalized by using a covalent chiral donor-acceptor model. Interestingly, blue, green-yellow and red chiral luminescent exciplexes can be obtained by modifying with the electron accepting character of the achiral unit while keeping the same chiral donor unit. These results bring new (inter)molecular guidelines to obtain simply and efficiently multi-color CP-TADF emitters.

Abstract
The first example of luminescent monosubstituted polyacetylenes (mono-PAs) is presented, based on a contracted cis-cisoid polyene backbone. It has an excellent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performance with a high dissymmetric factor (up to the order of 10-1 ). The luminescence stems from the helical cis-cisoid PA backbone, which is tightly fixed by the strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds, thereby reversing the energy order of excited states and enabling an emissive energy dissipation. CPL switches are facilely achieved by the solvent and temperature through reversible conformational transition. By taking advantages of fast response and high sensitivity, the thin film of mono-PAs could be used as a CPL-based probe for quantitative detection of trifluoroacetic acid with a wider linear dynamic range than those of photoluminescence and circular dichroism. This work opens a new avenue to develop novel smart CPL materials through modulating conformational transition.

Abstract
Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has shown promising application potentials in 3D display, optical data storage, smart sensors/probers, CPL lasers, and light source for asymmetric photosynthesis. In the last decade, the CPL-active small organic molecules (CPL-SOMs) have attracted rapidly increasing research interest owing to the great advantages of SOMs, such as high luminescence efficiency, facile modification of chemical structure, fine emission wavelength tuning, precise relationships between structure and properties, and as well as easy fabrication. Promoted by the unique effects of boryl group, such as strong electron-accepting ability, great steric effect, and Lewis acidity to bind with Lewis bases, we herein summarized our recent research results about the creation of CPL-SOMs by modification of chiral scaffolds, such as [2.2]paracyclophane, [5]/[7]helicene, and binaphthyl, with boryl group. The preliminary results have well demonstrated that the chiral triarylborane-based SOMs exhibit promising CPL properties, such as intense CPL in combination of high luminescence dissymmetry factor (|glum |) with high fluorescence efficiency, solvent-induced sign inversion, facile emission wavelength tuning, high fluorescence efficiency in the solid, and substituent-induced sign inversion.

Abstract
A series of axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyls with trialkylsiloxy (OSiR3 ) groups were synthesized. Among them, 1 a-c possessing OSiR3 groups at the 7,7'-positions and methyl groups at the 2,2'-positions were liquids at room temperature, and the neat liquids showed circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) (R=Bu; Φfl,liquid =0.21, |glum, liquid |=1.6×10-3 ). The |glum, liquid | value is the highest of pure liquids. These compounds remained liquid over a broad range of temperatures, down to -50 °C. Time-dependent DFT calculations indicated that in the excited state, the binaphthyls adopt a transoid conformation with a small angle between the electric and magnetic transition dipole moments (θμ,m =77°), which is a key factor in their CPL activity. The best binaphthyl dihedral angle in the excited state is approximately 110°.

Abstract
The origin of the positive temperature effect in fluorescence emission of a newly designed perylene bisimide (PBI) derivative with two naphthyl units containing ortho-methoxy group (NM) at its bay positions (PBI-2NM) was elucidated. A key point is the finding of a weak hydrogen bond (<5.0 kcal mol-1 ) between the methoxy group of the NM unit and a nearby hydrogen atom of the PBI core. It is the bonding that drives co-planarization of the different aromatic units, resulting in delocalization of the π-electrons of the compound as synthesized, inducing fluorescence quenching via intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). With increasing temperature, the co-planar structure could be distorted in part, resulting in a decreased degree of ICT, and hence leading to enhanced fluorescence emission. The unique positive temperature effect in emission induced by H-bond-driven co-planarization may pave a new avenue in designing functional molecular systems complementary to conventional methods.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of an enantiomeric pair of 1,8-diethynylanthracene-bridged naphthalenediimide (NDI)-based cyclophanes (Cyclo-NDIs) are reported. Each enantiomer of Cyclo-NDI exhibits a circularly polarized luminescence signal with a relatively large luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum =±8×10-3 ). We have further investigated the modulation of through-space electronic communication between co-facially oriented NDIs in a discrete Cyclo-NDI with changes in the temperature. Tuning of the electronic communication results from the conformational transformation of monomer- versus dimer-like features of Cyclo-NDI, as confirmed by UV/Vis, fluorescence, circular dichroic, and NMR spectroscopic analysis. The temperature-dependent optical response in the Cyclo-NDI through the conformational transformation could be utilized as a highly sensitive and reversible optical thermometer in a wide temperature range (100 to -80 °C).

Abstract
Purely organic materials showing room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and ultralong RTP (OURTP) have recently attracted much attention. However, it is challenging to integrate circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) into RTP/OURTP. Here, we show a strategy to realize CPL-active OURTP (CP-OURTP) by binding an achiral phosphor group directly to the chiral center of an ester chain. Engineering of this flexible chiral chain enables efficient chirality transfer to carbazole aggregates, resulting in strong CP-OURTP with a lifetime of over 0.6 s and dissymmetry factor of 2.3×10-3 after the conformation regulation upon photo-activation. The realized CP-OURTP is thus stable at room temperature but can be deactivated quickly at 50 °C to CP-RTP with high CPL stability during the photo-activation/thermal-deactivation cycles. Based on this extraordinary photo/thermal-responsive and highly reversible CP-OURTP/RTP, a CPL-featured lifetime-encrypted combinational logic device has been successfully established.

Abstract
Molecular materials with weak but extended and pliable supramolecular interactions are versatile candidates for eliciting stimuli-sensitive optical responses. A novel diaminodicyanoquinodimethane (DADQ) molecule, 7,7-bis(2-(2-pyridyl)ethylamino)-8,8-dicyanoquinodimethane (BPEDQ), has been synthesized and structurally characterized; it exhibits enhanced fluorescence emission in the aggregated and solid states, characteristic of DADQs. The pyridine moieties in the molecule, in addition to the amino and cyano groups of the strongly dipolar fluorophore moiety, induce extensive H-bonding interactions which can impart structural integrity to the solid material; this enables reversible crystalline-amorphous transformations triggered by mechanical grinding and solvent fuming. The concomitant fluorescence color and intensity switching are prominent and reversible. Protonation-deprotonation events induced by acidic and basic vapors also produce stark fluorescence response variations; the chemical stimuli also lead to amorphization of the solid. The full cycle of chemical and physical stimuli, and the consequence of their individual and coupled impact on the fluorescence emission, are illustrated using a BPEDQ-doped polymer thin film.
