From Bad Electrochemical Practices to an Environmental and Waste Reducing Approach for the Generation of Active Hydrogen Evolving Electrodes

Palladium Nanoparticles Hardwired in Carbon Nanoreactors Enable Continually Increasing Electrocatalytic Activity During the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Catalysts typically lose effectiveness during operation, with much effort invested in stabilising active metal centres to prolong their functional lifetime for as long as possible. In this study palladium nanoparticles (PdNP) supported inside hollow graphitised carbon nanofibers (GNF), designated as PdNP@GNF, opposed this trend. PdNP@GNF exhibited continuously increasing activity over 30000 reaction cycles when used as an electrocatalyst in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The activity of PdNP@GNF, expressed as the exchange current density, was always higher than activated carbon (Pd/C), and after 10000 cycles PdNP@GNF surpassed the activity of platinum on carbon (Pt/C). The extraordinary durability and self-improving behaviour of PdNP@GNF was solely related the unique nature of the location of the palladium nanoparticles, that is, at the graphitic step-edges within the GNF. Transmission electron microscopy imaging combined with spectroscopic analysis revealed an orchestrated series of reactions occurring at the graphitic step-edges during electrocatalytic cycling, in which some of the curved graphitic surfaces opened up to form a stack of graphene layers bonding directly with Pd atoms through Pd-C bonds. This resulted in the active metal centres becoming effectively hardwired into the electrically conducting nanoreactors (GNF), enabling facile charge transport to/from the catalytic centres resulting in the dramatic self-improving characteristics of the electrocatalyst.

Ultrasonically Surface-Activated Nickel Foam as a Highly Efficient Monolith Electrode for the Catalytic Oxidation of Methanol to Formate

Most of the current electrocatalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction are precious group metals such as Pt, Pd, and Ru. However, their use is limited due to their high cost, scarcity, and issues with carbon monoxide poisoning. We developed a simple method to prepare a nickel foam (NF)-based monolith electrode with a NiO nanosheet array structure as an efficient electrocatalyst toward the oxidation of methanol to produce formate. By a simple ultrasonic acid treatment and air oxidation at room temperature, an inert NF was converted to NiO/NF as a catalytically active electrode due to the uniform NiO nanosheet array that was rapidly formed on the surface of NiO/NF. In alkaline electrolytes containing methanol, the as-prepared NiO/NF catalysts exhibited a lower methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) potential of +1.53 V vs RHE at 100 mA cm^-2 compared to that of inert NF samples. The difference in potentials between the E_MOR and the E_OER at that current density was found to be 280 mV, indicating that methanol oxidation occurred at lower potentials as compared to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We also observed that the NiO/NF could also efficiently catalyze the oxidation of CO without being poisoned by it. NiO/NF retained close to 100% of its initial activity after 20,000 s of methanol oxidation tests at high current densities above 200 mA cm^-2. Because of the simple synthesis method and the enhanced catalytic performance and stability of NiO/NF, this allows methanol to be used as an OER masking agent for the energy-efficient generation of value-added products such as formic acid and hydrogen.

Ni3Se4@MoSe2 Composites for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been considered as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Many studies have demonstrated the feasibility of significant HER performance improvement of TMDs by constructing composite materials with Ni-based compounds. In this work, we prepared Ni3Se4@MoSe2 composites as electrocatalysts for the HER by growing in situ MoSe2 on the surface of Ni3Se4 nanosheets. Electrochemical measurements revealed that Ni3Se4@MoSe2 nanohybrids are highly active and durable during the HER process, which exhibits a low onset overpotential (145 mV) and Tafel slope (65 mV/dec), resulting in enhanced HER performance compared to pristine MoSe2 nanosheets. The enhanced HER catalytic activity is ascribed to the high surface area of Ni3Se4 nanosheets, which can both efficiently prevent the agglomeration issue of MoSe2 nanosheets and create more catalytic edge sites, hence accelerate electron transfer between MoSe2 and the working electrode in the HER. This approach provides an effective pathway for catalytic enhancement of MoSe2 electrocatalysts and can be applied for other TMD electrocatalysts.
