Intercalated Iridium Diselenide Electrocatalysts for Efficient pH‐Universal Water Splitting

Multicolor Fully Light-Modulated Artificial Synapse Based on P-MoSe2/PxOy Heterostructured Memristor

Developing brain-inspired neuromorphic paradigms is imperative to breaking through the von Neumann bottleneck. The emulation of synaptic functionality has motivated the exploration of optoelectronic memristive devices as high-performance artificial synapses, yet the realization of such a modulatory terminal capable of full light-modulation, especially near-infrared stimuli, remains a challenge. Here, a fully light-modulated synaptic memristor is reported on a P-MoSe2/PxOy heterostructure formed by a facile one-step selenization process. The results demonstrate successful achievement of multiwavelength (visible 470 nm to near-infrared 808 nm) modulated switching operations (reset in 0.21-0.97 V) and diverse synaptic behaviors, including postsynaptic current, paired-pulse facilitation, short- and long-term memory (STM and LTM), and learning-forgetting. Notably, the device can exhibit a 3.42 μA PSC increase under six identical 655 nm stimuli, a 11.90-46.24 μA PSC modulation by changing 808 nm light intensity from 6 to 14 mW/cm2, and a transition from STM to LTM lasting between 2.47 and 4.27 s by a prolonged 808 nm pulse from 1 to 30 s. A novel possible light-induced switching mechanism in such a heterostructure is proposed. Furthermore, brain-like light-stimulated memory behavior and Pavlov's classical conditioning demonstrate the device's capacity for processing complex inputs. The study presents a design toward a multiwavelength modulated artificial visual system for color recognition.

Assembled RhRuFe Trimetallene for Water Electrolysis

Industrializing water electrolyzers demands better electrocatalysts, especially for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The prevailing OER catalysts are Ir or Ru-based nanomaterials, however, they still suffer from insufficient stability. An alternative yet considerably less explored approach is to upgrade Rh, a known stable but moderately active element for OER electrocatalysis, via rational structural engineering. Herein, a precise synthesis of assembled RhRuFe trimetallenes (RhRuFe TMs) with an average thickness of 1 nm for boosting overall water splitting catalysis is reported. Favorable mass transport and optimized electronic structure collectively render RhRuFe TMs with an improved OER activity of an overpotential of 330 mV to deliver 10 mA cm-2, which is significantly lower than the Rh/C control (by 601 mV) and reported Rh-based OER electrocatalysts. In particular, the RhRuFe TMs-based water splitting devices can achieve the current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low voltage of 1.63 V, which is among the best in the Rh-based bifunctional catalysts for electrolyzers. The addition of Fe in RhRuFe TMs can modulate the strain/electron distribution of the multi-alloy, which regulates the binding energies of H* and OH* in hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions for achieving the enhanced bifunctional OER and HER catalysis is further demonstrated.

Analysis of the Scale of Global Human Needs and Opportunities for Sustainable Catalytic Technologies

We analyzed the enormous scale of global human needs, their carbon footprint, and how they are connected to energy availability. We established that most challenges related to resource security and sustainability can be solved by providing distributed, affordable, and clean energy. Catalyzed chemical transformations powered by renewable electricity are emerging successor technologies that have the potential to replace fossil fuels without sacrificing the wellbeing of humans. We highlighted the technical, economic, and societal advantages and drawbacks of short- to medium-term decarbonization solutions to gauge their practicability, economic feasibility, and likelihood for widespread acceptance on a global scale. We detailed catalysis solutions that enhance sustainability, along with strategies for catalyst and process development, frontiers, challenges, and limitations, and emphasized the need for planetary stewardship. Electrocatalytic processes enable the production of solar fuels and commodity chemicals that address universal issues of the water, energy and food security nexus, clothing, the building sector, heating and cooling, transportation, information and communication technology, chemicals, consumer goods and services, and healthcare, toward providing global resource security and sustainability and enhancing environmental and social justice.

Enhanced Acidic Water Oxidation by Dynamic Migration of Oxygen Species at the Ir/Nb2 O5-x Catalyst/Support Interfaces

Catalyst/support interaction plays a vital role in catalysis towards acidic oxygen evolution (OER), and the performance reinforcement is currently interpreted by either strain or electron donation effect. We herein report that these views are insufficient, where the dynamic evolution of the interface under potential bias must be considered. Taking Nb₂ O_5-x supported iridium (Ir/Nb₂ O_5-x ) as a model catalyst, we uncovered the dynamic migration of oxygen species between IrO_x and Nb₂ O_5-x during OER. Direct spectroscopic evidence combined with theoretical computation suggests these migrations not only regulate the in situ Ir structure towards boosted activity, but also suppress its over-oxidation via spontaneously delivering excessive oxygen from IrO_x to Nb₂ O_5-x . The optimized Ir/Nb₂ O_5-x thus demonstrated exceptional performance in scalable water electrolyzers, i.e., only need 1.839 V to attain 3 A cm^-2 (surpassing the DOE 2025 target), and no activity decay during a 2000 h test at 2 A cm^-2 .

Hierarchical Metal Sulfides Heterostructure as Superior Bifunctional Electrode for Overall Water Splitting

The development of highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is of significant importance, but huge challenges remain. The key element depends on engineering the electronic structure and surface properties of material to achieve improved catalytic activity. Herein, a hierarchical nanowire array of metal sulfides heterostructure on nickel foam (FeCoNiS_x /NF) was designed as a novel type of hybrid electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. The hybrid structure endowed plenty of catalytic active sites, strong electronic interactions, and high interfacial charge transferability, leading to superior bifunctional performance. As a result, the FeCoNiS_x /NF catalyst delivered low overpotentials of 97 and 260 mV at the current density of 50 mA cm^-2 for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively. Moreover, the FeCoNiS_x /NF-based water electrolyzer exhibited a small potential of 1.57 V for a high current density of 50 mA cm^-2 . These results indicate the promising application potential of FeCoNiS_x /NF electrode for hydrogen generation. This work provides a new approach to develop robust hybrid materials as the highly active electrode for electrocatalytic water splitting.

Recent progress on transition metal diselenides from formation and modification to applications

The development of graphene promotes the research of similar two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with semiconductor properties. Monolayer or few-layer TMDCs have several advantages, such as direct band gap, weak interlayer van der Waals force, large interlayer spacing, and abundant marginal active sites, which make them widely used in catalysis, optoelectronics, as well as energy conversion and storage devices. In addition, transition metal diselenides (TMDSs) also possess many intriguing characteristics. For instance, transition metal diselenides (e.g., MoSe₂) have a more stable 1T phase, larger interlayer spacing, smaller band gap, and more obvious metallic property of Se than TMDCs (e.g., MoS₂). Thus, it has become one of the most attractive research topics branching out from TMDCs. Herein, this review unveils the structures, synthesis, properties, modifications, applications, and perspectives for TMDSs.

Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acidic Conditions: Recent Progress and Perspectives

The electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an important half-cell reaction in many renewable energy conversion and storage technologies, including electrolyzers, nitrogen fixation, CO₂ reduction, metal-air batteries, and regenerative fuel cells. Among them, proton exchange membrane (PEM)-based devices exhibit a series of advantages, such as excellent proton conductivity, high durability, and good mechanical strength, and have attracted global interest as a green energy device for transport and stationary sectors. Nevertheless, with a view to rapid commercialization, it is urgent to develop highly active and acid-stable OER catalysts for PEM-based devices. In this Review, based on the recent advances in theoretical calculation and in situ/operando characterization, the OER mechanism in acidic conditions is first discussed in detail. Subsequently, recent advances in the development of several types of acid-stable OER catalysts, including noble metals, non-noble metals, and even metal-free OER materials, are systematically summarized. Finally, the current key issues and future challenges for materials used as acidic OER catalysis are identified and potential future directions are proposed.

Exclusive Strain Effect Boosts Overall Water Splitting in PdCu/Ir Core/Shell Nanocrystals

Core/shell nanocatalysts are a class of promising materials, which achieve the enhanced catalytic activities through the synergy between ligand effect and strain effect. However, it has been challenging to disentangle the contributions from the two effects, which hinders the rational design of superior core/shell nanocatalysts. Herein, we report precise synthesis of PdCu/Ir core/shell nanocrystals, which can significantly boost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) via the exclusive strain effect. The heteroepitaxial coating of four Ir atomic layers onto PdCu nanoparticle gives a relatively thick Ir shell eliminating the ligand effect, but creates a compressive strain of ca. 3.60%. The strained PdCu/Ir catalysts can deliver a low OER overpotential and a high mass activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the compressive strain in Ir shell downshifts the d-band center and weakens the binding of the intermediates, causing the enhanced OER activity. The compressive strain also boosts hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and the strained nanocrystals can be served as excellent catalysts for both anode and cathode in overall water-splitting electrocatalysis.

Grain boundary engineering of Co3O4 nanomeshes for efficient electrochemical oxygen evolution

The development of high-efficiency and stable electrocatalysts is significant for energy conversion and storage. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a pivotal half reaction, is seriously limited in its practical applications due to its sluggish kinetics and thus an excellent electrocatalyst for OER is urgently required. In this paper, we design a novel Co₃O₄ nanomesh (Co₃O₄ NMs) with high density grain boundaries (GBs), which functions as a highly efficient and steady OER electrocatalyst. The optimal Co₃O₄ NMs-500 can achieve a low overpotential of 295 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, and a small Tafel slope of 31 mV dec^-1, which exceeds the commercial Ir/C, as well as the majority of other catalysts reported in the literature. The Co₃O₄ NMs-500 also exhibit promising durability, with a negligible decline in activity after 18 h of operation. Detailed studies indicate that the presence of GBs leads to more exposed active sites and the enhanced adsorption of intermediate species on Co₃O₄ NMs-500, thereby improving the OER's catalytic activity. This work not only relates to the activity-GBs relationship, but also opens up a unique perspective for the design of the next generation of electrocatalysts.

Nitrogen-Incorporated Cobalt Sulfide/Graphene Hybrid Catalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Water electrolysis is an advanced and sustainable energy conversion technology used to generate H₂ . However, the low efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hampers the overall water-splitting catalytic performance. Here, a hybrid catalyst was constructed from N-doped CoS₂ nanoparticles on N,S-co-doped graphene nanosheets (N-CoS₂ /G) using a facile method, and the catalyst exhibited excellent bifunctional activity. Introduction of N atoms not only promoted the adsorption of reaction intermediates, but also bridged the CoS₂ nanoparticles and graphene to improve electron transfer. Moreover, using thiourea as both N- and S-source ensured synthesis of much smaller-sized nanoparticles with more surface active sites. Surprisingly, the N-CoS₂ /G exhibited superior catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 260 mV for the OER and 109 mV for the HER at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 . The assembled N-CoS₂ /G : N-CoS₂ /G electrolyzer substantially expedited overall water splitting with a voltage requirement of 1.58 V to reach 10 mA cm^-2 , which is superior to most reported Co-based bifunctional catalysts and other non-precious-metal catalysts. This work provides a new strategy towards advanced bifunctional catalysts for water electrolysis.

Three-Dimensional Transition Metal Phosphide Heteronanorods for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

The development of low-cost electrocatalysts with excellent activity and durability for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) poses a huge challenge in water splitting. In this study, a simple and scalable strategy is proposed to fabricate 3 D heteronanorods on nickel foam, in which nickel molybdenum phosphide nanorods are covered with cobalt iron phosphide (P-NM-CF HNRs). As a result of the rational design, the P-NM-CF HNRs have a large surface area, tightly connected interfaces, optimized electronic structures, and synergy between the metal atoms. Accordingly, the P-NM-CF HNRs exhibit a remarkably high catalytic activity for the OER under alkaline conditions and wide-pH HER. For overall water splitting, the catalyst only requires a voltage of 1.53 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in 1 m KOH with prominent stability, and the activity is not degraded after stability testing for 36 h. This new strategy can inspire the design of durable nonprecious-metal catalysts for large-scale industrial water splitting.

Nanoheterostructures of Partially Oxidized RuNi Alloy as Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting, as one of the most promising methods to store renewable energy generated by intermittent sources, such as solar and wind energy, has attracted tremendous attention in recent years. Developing efficient, robust, and green catalysts for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) is of great interest. This study concerns a facile and green approach for producing RuNi/RuNi oxide nanoheterostructures by controllable partial oxidation of RuNi nanoalloy, which is characterized and confirmed by various techniques, including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. This nanoheterostructure demonstrates outstanding bifunctional activities for catalyzing the HER and OER with overpotentials that are both among the lowest reported values. In a practical alkali-water-splitting electrolyzer, it also achieves a record-low cell voltage of 1.42 V at 10 mA cm^-2 , which is significantly superior to the commercial RuO₂ //Pt/C couple and other reported bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations are employed to elaborate the effect of Ni incorporation. This simple catalyst preparation approach is expected to be transferrable to other electrocatalytic reactions.
