Abstract
A "rim-differentiated" pillar[6]arene (RD-P[6]) was obtained successfully, with the assistance of a dimeric silver trifluoroacetate template, among eight different constitutional isomers in a direct and regioselective manner. The solid-state conformation of this macrocycle could switch from the 1,3,5-alternate to a truly rim-differentiated one upon guest inclusion. This highly symmetric RD-P[6] not only hosts metal-containing molecules inside its cavity, but also can form a pillar[6]arene-C60 adduct through co-crystallization on account of donor-acceptor interactions. The development of synthetic strategies to desymmetrize pillararenes offers new opportunities for engineering complex molecular architectures and organic electronic materials.

Abstract
Due to the highly symmetrical structures generated from one-pot syntheses, the partial functionalization of macrocycles is usually beset with low yields and onerous purifications of the target multifunctional macrocycles. To improve this circumstance, taking pillar[6]arenes as an example, a two-step fragment coupling method is developed for synthesizing symmetrically tetra-functionalized pillar[6]arenes, namely X-pillar[6]arenes. This method is simple and versatile, which makes hetero-fragment coupling and pre-functionalization available. Nine new macrocycles and a pillar[6]arene-based cage are prepared. In addition, one of the newly synthesized macrocycles, COOEtEtXP[6] , exhibits a strong cyan luminescence in the solid state under irradiation by 365 nm UV light. This emission originates from intramolecular through-space conjugation. Meanwhile, formation of a supramolecular polymer by multiple non-covalent intra/intermolecular interactions help rigidify the structure and make COOEtEtXP[6] an efficient solid-state emitter. It is believed that this fragment coupling can also be used to realize the multi-functionalization of other macrocycles.

Abstract
Shape complementarity is a biological craft for precisely binding substrates at protein-protein interfaces. An analogy to such a function can be drawn conceptually for crystalline porous solids; yet the manifested entities are rare in reticular chemistry. The bottleneck-shaped pores carved out of a metal-organic framework, Zn(MIBA)2 (aka. MAF-stu-13), can perfectly accommodate benzene molecules. Remarkably, its framework adapts to the optimal guest binding-the enhanced host-guest interactions in the neck in turn minimize the guest-guest repulsion in the pore to the extent it turns into attraction-as demonstrated by the combined X-ray structural and DFT computational studies. This adaptive material can be used for liquid-phase production of ultrahigh-purity (≥99 %) cyclohexane, achieving a balance between uptake capacity and separation selectivity and surpassing the performances of other porous and nonporous crystals reported recently (e.g. product purity 99.4 % vs. 97.5 % to date).

Abstract
Macrocycles denoted as saucer[n]arenes (n=4,5) were easily synthesized by the one-pot condensation of 2,7-dimethoxynaphthalene (2,7-DMN) and paraformaldehyde in the presence of TFA or catalytic BF3 ⋅OEt2 . With 1,1-dimethylpiperidin-1-ium as the template, saucer[4]arene was selectively obtained. Crystal structures show that saucer[n]arenes are all composed of 2,7-DMN moiety bridged by the methylene groups at 1,6-positions: all of the 7-methoxy groups lie on one face, and all of the 2-methoxy groups lie on the other. Saucer[n]arenes exhibit strong fluorescence properties with the quantum yields of 19.6 % and 23.4 %. They form 1:1 complexes with ammonium salts in both solution and solid state (association constant up to 105 M-1 in CDCl3 ). Chiral quaternary ammonium salts can induce the chirality of the dynamically racemic inherently chiral saucer[n]arenes in solution, and thus show mirror-imaged circular dichroism signals and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties.

Abstract
Benzene hydrogenation is an important industrial process. The reaction is incomplete, resulting in a mixture of benzene, cyclohexane, and/or cyclohexene that have to be separated before any further reactions. The currently used extractive and azeotropic distillations are operationally complex and energy intensive. Adsorptive separation provides an alternative energy-efficient method. However, the separation of the ternary mixture by adsorptive separation has not yet been reported. In the present research, we report two macrocyclic hosts with hydrogen-bonding sites in their cavities that are able to separate the ternary mixture of benzene, cyclohexene, and cyclohexane. N-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions were found to play a key role in the selective separation. In addition, fast adsorption, high loading ratios, and easy recycling are achieved with the present system, which is promising for practical applications.

Abstract
The exploitation of new materials for adsorptive separation of industrially important hydrocarbons is of great importance in both scientific research and petrochemical industry. Nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) as a robust class of synthetic materials have drawn much attention during the past five years for their superior performance in adsorption and separation. Pillararenes are the main family of macrocyclic arenes used for NACs construction, where the structure-function relationship has been intensively studied. In the past two years, some emerging types of synthetic macrocyclic arenes have been successfully brought into this research field, showing the gradual enrichment and diversification of NACs materials. This Minireview summarizes the recent advances of synthetic macrocycle-based NACs, which are categorized by various practical applications in molecular separation. Besides, NACs-based vapochromic supramolecular systems are also discussed. Finally, future perspectives and challenges of NACs are given. We envisage that this Minireview will be a useful and timely reference for those who are interested in new molecular and supramolecular crystals for storage and separation applications.
