Abstract
In this work, alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) processes of three typical nickel-based electrocatalysts [i. e., Ni, α-Ni(OH)2 , and β-Ni(OH)2 ] were investigated to probe critical factors that determine the activity and durability. The HER activity trend was observed as Ni≫α-Ni(OH)2 >β-Ni(OH)2 , likely attributed to a synergy between metallic Ni and Ni(OH)2 components on the Ni surface and fast water dissociation kinetics on the α-Ni(OH)2 surface. With the HER proceeding, the metallic Ni surface, however, gradually became α-Ni(OH)2 , and α-Ni(OH)2 surface ultimately transformed into β-phase, leading to a dramatic activity decrease of Ni electrodes. Therefore, Ni electrodes were coated with α-Ni(OH)2 nanosheets to slow down the nickel hydroxylation and optimize the surface ratio of Ni(OH)2 to metallic Ni. This simple coating procedure enhanced both activity and durability of Ni electrocatalysts.

Interfacial Electronic Coupling of NC@WO 3 -W 2 C Decorated Ru Clusters as a Reversible Catalyst toward Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Oxidation and Evolution Reactions. CHEMSUSCHEM 2021; 14:2992-3000. Abstract
Designing a bifunctional catalyst for hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is significant toward developing sustainable hydrogen-electric conversion systems. Herein, a cost-effective bifunctional catalyst, Ru/N-doped Carbon@WO3 -W2 C (Ru/NC@WOC), was developed via co-precipitation and polyol reduction. Ru/NC@WOC showed superior HOR/HER activity in alkaline solution in comparison with commercial Pt/C. HOR electrochemical tests showed that the mass activity at 0.05 V (1.96 m A μ g R u - 1 ) and exchange-current density were 7.5 and 1.2 times that of Pt/C. Additionality, Ru/NC@WOC exhibited up 30-fold HOR activity in mass activity compared with benchmark Ru/C. Moreover, it also displayed exceptional electrocatalytic HER with overpotentials of 31 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 119 mV at 100 mA cm-2 , surpassing Pt/C, benchmark Ru/C, and most of the previously reported electrocatalysts. The outstanding catalytic activity of Ru/NC@WOC probably arises from the synergy between Ru and NC@WOC matrix, suitable hydrogen binding energy, and highly conductive substrate. Thus, this work may pave a new avenue to fabricate low-cost bifunctional HOR/HER catalysts for alkaline fuel cells and water electrolyzer.

Abstract
The influence of electrolyte pH, the presence of alkali metal cations (Na+ , K+ ), and the presence of O2 on the interfacial water structure of polycrystalline gold electrodes has been experimentally studied in detail. The potential of maximum entropy (PME) was determined by the laser-induced current transient (LICT) technique. Our results demonstrate that increasing the electrolyte pH and introducing O2 shift the PME to more positive potentials. Interestingly, the PME exhibits a higher sensitivity to the pH change in the presence of K+ than Na+ . Altering the pH of the K2 SO4 solution from 4 to 6 can cause a drastic shift in the PME. These findings reveal that, for example, K2 SO4 and Na2 SO4 cannot be considered as equal supporting electrolytes: it is not a viable assumption. This can likely be extrapolated to other common "inert" supporting electrolytes. Beyond this, knowledge about the near-ideal electrolyte composition can be used to optimize electrochemical devices such as electrolyzers, fuel cells, batteries, and supercapacitors.
