La(FeCuMnMgTi)O3 High-Entropy Oxide Nanoparticles as Highly Efficient Catalysts for Solvent-Free Aerobic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

In this work, a solid-state method for the synthesis of perovskite La(FeCuMnMgTi)O3 high-entropy oxide (HEO) nanoparticles is detailed. Additionally, the high performance of these nanoparticles as catalysts in the aerobic and solvent-free oxidation of benzyl alcohol is demonstrated. The structural features of HEO nanoparticles are studied by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The La(FeCuMnMgTi)O3 nanoparticles demonstrate excellent benzyl alcohol conversion rates and selectivity for benzaldehyde, reaching 10.6% conversion and 52.8% selectivity after reaction for only 4 h and ≤75.6% conversion after 24 h. In addition, the as-prepared HEO catalyst displays robust stability in benzyl alcohol oxidation. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the adsorption energy of benzaldehyde on the HEO surface is lower than that of the benzoic acid. This, in turn, hinders the gradual conversion of benzaldehyde to benzoic acid on the surface of HEO and retains benzaldehyde as the main product.

Recent Advances Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide to Light Olefins over Iron-Based Catalysts via the Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis

The massive burning of fossil fuels has been important for economic and social development, but the increase in the CO2 concentration has seriously affected environmental sustainability. In industrial and agricultural production, light olefins are one of the most important feedstocks. Therefore, the preparation of light olefins by CO2 hydrogenation has been intensively studied, especially for the development of efficient catalysts and for the application in industrial production. Fe-based catalysts are widely used in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis due to their high stability and activity, and they also exhibit excellent catalytic CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins. This paper systematically summarizes and analyzes the reaction mechanism of Fe-based catalysts, alkali and transition metal modifications, interactions between active sites and carriers, the synthesis process, and the effect of the byproduct H2O on catalyst performance. Meanwhile, the challenges to the development of CO2 hydrogenation for light olefin synthesis are presented, and future development opportunities are envisioned.

High-Entropy La(FeCuMnMgTi)O3 Nanoparticles as Heterogeneous Catalyst for CO2 Electroreduction Reaction

In this work, La(FeCuMnMgTi)O3 HEO nanoparticles with a perovskite-type structure are synthesized and used in the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The catalyst demonstrates high performance as an electrocatalyst for the CO2RR, with a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.5% at a current density of 21.9 mA cm-2 under -0.75 V vs a saturated calomel electrode (SCE). Particularly, an FE above 54% is obtained for methyl isopropyl ketone (C5H10O, MIPK) at a partial current density of 16 mA cm-2, overcoming all previous works. Besides, the as-prepared HEO catalyst displays robust stability in the CO2RR. The excellent catalytic performance of La(FeCuMnMgTi)O3 is ascribed to the synergistic effect between the electronic effects associated with five cations occupying the high-entropy sublattice sites and the oxygen vacancies within the perovskite structure of the HEO. Finally, DFT calculations indicate that Cu plays a vital role in the catalytic activity of the La(FeCuMnMgTi)O3 HEO nanoparticles toward C2+ products.

Chitosan derived efficient and stable Pd nano-catalyst for high efficiency hydrogenation

The design and development of green and efficient supported catalysts is the frontier direction in the field of green synthesis, which conforms to the strategic concept of green sustainable chemistry and "carbon neutrality". Herein, we used a renewable resource chitosan (CS) derived from seafood wastes of chitin as carriers to design two different chitosan-supported palladium (Pd) nano-catalysts through different activation methods. The Pd particles were firmly and uniformly dispersed on the chitosan microspheres due to the interconnected nanoporous structure and functional groups of chitosan, proved by diverse characterizations. The chitosan supported catalysts (Pd@CS) was applied to hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol, which showed competitive catalytic activity compared to commercial Pd/C, un-supported nano-Pd and Pd(OAc)₂ catalysts, as well as excellent catalytic activity, good reusability, long-life and broad applicability in selective hydrogenation of aromatic aldehydes, suggesting potential of applications in green industrial catalysis.

Novel nano spinel-type high-entropy oxide (HEO) catalyst for hydrogen production using ethanol steam reforming

Catalyst sintering caused by high temperature operating conditions during ethanol steam reforming (ESR) is a common issue for traditional catalysts with low Tammann temperature metals. In recent years, high entropy oxides have been popular in thermal catalysis due to their special thermodynamics and kinetics characteristics, which is expected to be a suitable approach for enhancing catalyst stability. This paper first reports the application of HEO in ESR and the characterization. The results exhibited a nano structure (CoCrFeNiAl)₃O₄ HEO with a spinel-phase and was successfully synthesized by a polyol hydrothermal precipitation-calcination method. An abundance of oxygen vacancies were formed, and were further enriched in a hydrogen atmosphere as the M-O bond opened. Interestingly, its self-reorganization featured the rendered the metals spilling out of the HEO bulk phase as active species for hydrogen production during ESR, whereas the isolated metal cation randomly dissolved into the parent metal oxide cell again after the reaction instead of agglomerating over the catalyst surface. This gave the (CoCrFeNiAl)₃O₄ a large number of dispersed active sites, as well as a high thermal stability. In addition, 81% of the hydrogen yield as well as 85% of H₂ selectivity were achieved at 600 °C. This research might offer possibilities for the development of thermal catalytic hydrogen production under high temperature conditions such as steam reforming.

Role of MoOx Surficial Modification in Enhancing the OER Performance of Ru-Pyrochlore

Pyrochlore ruthenate (Y₂ Ru₂ O_7-δ ) is highlighted as a promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst for water splitting in polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyzers. However, an efficient electronic modulation strategy for Y₂ Ru₂ O_7-δ is required to overcome its electrochemical inertness. Herein, a surface manipulation strategy involving implanting MoO_x moieties on nano Y₂ Ru₂ O_7-δ (Mo-YRO) using wet chemical peroxone method is demonstrated. In contrast to electronic structure regulation by intramolecular charge transfer (i.e., substitutional strategies), the heterogeneous Mo-O-Ru micro-interfaces facilitate efficient intermolecular electron transfer from [RuO₆ ] to MoO_x . This eliminates the bandgap by inducing Ru 4d delocalization and band alignment rearrangement. The MoO_x modifiers also alleviate distortion of [RuO₆ ] by shortening Ru-O bond and enlarging Ru-O-Ru bond angle. This electronic and geometric structure tailoring enhances the OER performance, showing a small overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 . Moreover, the electron-accepting MoO_x moieties provide more electronegative surfaces, which serve as a protective "fence" to inhibit the dissolution of metal ions, thereby stabilizing the electrochemical activity. This study offers fresh insights into the design of new-based pyrochlore electrocatalysts, and also highlights the versatility of surface engineering as a way of optimizing electronic structure and catalytic performance of other related materials.

Structure and magnetism of electrospun porous high-entropy (Cr1/5Mn1/5Fe1/5Co1/5Ni1/5)3O4, (Cr1/5Mn1/5Fe1/5Co1/5Zn1/5)3O4 and (Cr1/5Mn1/5Fe1/5Ni1/5Zn1/5)3O4 spinel oxide nanofibers

High-entropy oxide nanofibers, based on equimolar (Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni), (Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Zn) and (Cr,Mn,Fe,Ni,Zn) combinations, were prepared by electrospinning followed by calcination. The obtained hollow nanofibers exhibited a porous structure consisting of interconnected nearly strain-free (Cr_1/5Mn_1/5Fe_1/5Co_1/5Ni_1/5)₃O₄, (Cr_1/5Mn_1/5Fe_1/5Co_1/5Zn_1/5)₃O₄ and (Cr_1/5Mn_1/5Fe_1/5Ni_1/5Zn_1/5)₃O₄ single crystals with a pure Fd3̄m spinel structure. Oxidation state of the cations at the nanofiber surface was assessed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cation distributions were proposed satisfying electroneutrality and optimizing octahedral stabilization. The magnetic data are consistent with a distribution of cations that satisfies the energetic preferences for octahedral vs. tetrahedral sites and is random only within the octahedral and tetrahedral sublattices. The nanofibers are ferrimagnets with relatively low critical temperature more similar to cubic chromites and manganites than to ferrites. Replacing the magnetic cations Co or Ni with non-magnetic Zn lowers the critical temperature from 374 K (Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni) to 233 and 105 K for (Cr,Mn,Fe,Ni,Zn) and (Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Zn), respectively. The latter nanofibers additionally have a low temperature transition to a reentrant spin-glass-like state.
