Modulating Orientational Order to Organize Polyhedral Nanoparticles into Plastic Crystals and Uniform Metacrystals

Assembly mechanism of surface-functionalized nanocubes

Faceted nanoparticles can be used as building blocks to assemble nanomaterials with exceptional optical and catalytic properties. Recent studies have shown that surface functionalization of such nanoparticles with organic molecules, polymer chains, or DNA can be used to control the separation distance and orientation of particles within their assemblies. In this study, we computationally investigate the mechanism of assembly of nanocubes grafted with short-chain molecules. Our approach involves computing the interaction free energy landscape of a pair of such nanocubes via Monte Carlo simulations and using the Dijkstra algorithm to determine the minimum free energy pathway connecting key states in the landscape. We find that the assembly pathway of nanocubes is very rugged involving multiple energy barriers and metastable states. Analysis of nanocube configurations along the pathway reveals that the assembly mechanism is dominated by sliding motion of nanocubes relative to each other punctuated by their local dissociation at grafting points involving lineal separation and rolling motions. The height of energy barriers between metastable states depends on factors such as the interaction strength and surface roughness of the nanocubes and the steric repulsion from the grafts. These results imply that the observed assembly configuration of nanocubes depends not only on their globally stable minimum free energy state but also on the assembly pathway leading to this state. The free energy landscapes and assembly pathways presented in this study along with the proposed guidelines for engineering such pathways should be useful to researchers aiming to achieve uniform nanostructures from self-assembly of faceted nanoparticles.

Controlled Two-Dimensional Alignment of Metal-Organic Frameworks in Polymer Films

Controlling the alignment of metal-organic framework (MOF) particles is valueable for fully exploiting the anisotropic properties and porous structure of these materials. Herein, we propose a simple, one-step method that can control the two-dimensional (2D) alignment of MOF particles over large areas. Orientational control is achieved without consideration of the underlying lattice parameters or the need for particle surface modification, but instead was achieved by selection of the casting solvent on a water surface. Two distinct types of MOF particles, a hexagonal bifrustum morphology of MIL-96 and an octahedral morphology of the UiO-66 family were aligned and captured in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix using this approach. This work provides opportunities for studying and utilizing the anisotropic properties of MOFs in thin film applications.

Pervasive orientational and directional locking at geometrically heterogeneous sliding interfaces

Understanding the drift motion and dynamical locking of crystalline clusters on patterned substrates is important for the diffusion and manipulation of nano- and microscale objects on surfaces. In a previous work, we studied the orientational and directional locking of colloidal two-dimensional clusters with triangular structure driven across a triangular substrate lattice. Here we show with experiments and simulations that such locking features arise for clusters with arbitrary lattice structure sliding across arbitrary regular substrates. Similar to triangular-triangular contacts, orientational and directional locking are strongly correlated via the real- and reciprocal-space Moiré patterns of the contacting surfaces. Due to the different symmetries of the surfaces in contact, however, the relation between the locking orientation and the locking direction becomes more complicated compared to interfaces composed of identical lattice symmetries. We provide a generalized formalism which describes the relation between the locking orientation and locking direction with arbitrary lattice symmetries.
