Advances in organocatalyzed synthesis of organic compounds

The recent advancements in utilizing organocatalysts for the synthesis of organic compounds have been described in this review by focusing on their simplicity, effectiveness, reproducibility, and high selectivity which lead to excellent product yields. The organocatalytic methods for various derivatives, such as indoles, pyrazolones, anthrone-functionalized benzylic amines, maleimide, polyester, phthalimides, dihydropyrimidin, heteroaryls, N-aryl benzimidazoles, stilbenoids, quinazolines, quinolines, and oxazolidinones have been specifically focused. The review provides more understanding by delving into potential reaction mechanisms. We anticipate that this collection of data and findings on successful synthesis of diverse compound derivatives will serve as valuable resources and stimulating current and future research efforts in organocatalysis and industrial chemistry.

Insight into the interdependence of Ni and Al in bifunctional Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts at the nanoscale

Catalyst design is crucial for improving catalytic activity and product selectivity. In a bifunctional Ni/ZSM-5 zeolite type catalyst, catalytic properties are usually tuned via varying Al and Ni contents. While changes in acid properties associated with Al sites are usually closely investigated, Ni phases, however, receive inadequate attention. Herein, we present a systematic structural study of Ni in the Ni/ZSM-5 materials by using Ni K-edge XANES and EXAFS analyses, complemented by XRD and TEM, to resolve the changes in the local environment of Ni species induced by the different Al contents of the parent ZSM-5 prepared by a "green", template free technique. Ni species in Ni/ZSM-5 exist as NiO crystals (3-50 nm) and as charge compensating Ni²⁺ cations. The Ni K-edge XANES and EXAFS results enabled the quantification of Ni-containing species. At a low Al to Si ratio (n _Al/n _Si ≤ 0.04), the NiO nanoparticles predominate in the samples and account for over 65% of Ni phases. However, NiO is outnumbered by Ni²⁺ cations attached to the zeolite framework in ZSM-5 with a high Al to Si ratio (n _Al/n _Si = 0.05) due to a higher number of framework negative charges imparted by Al. The obtained results show that the number of highly reducible and active NiO crystals is strongly correlated with the framework Al sites present in ZSM-5 zeolites, which depend greatly on the synthesis conditions. Therefore, this kind of study is beneficial for any further investigation of the catalytic activities of Ni/ZSM-5 and other metal-modified bifunctional catalysts.

Application of computational approach in plastic pyrolysis kinetic modelling: a review

During the past decade, pyrolysis routes have been identified as one of the most promising solutions for plastic waste management. However, the industrial adoption of such technologies has been limited and several unresolved blind spots hamper the commercial application of pyrolysis. Despite many years and efforts to explain pyrolysis models based on global kinetic approaches, recent advances in computational modelling such as machine learning and quantum mechanics offer new insights. For example, the kinetic and mechanistic information about plastic pyrolysis reactions necessary for scaling up processes is unravelling. This selective literature review reveals some of the foundational knowledge and accurate views on the reaction pathways, product yields, and other features of pyrolysis created by these new tools. Pyrolysis routes mapped by machine learning and quantum mechanics will gain more relevance in the coming years, especially studies that combine computational models with different time and scale resolutions governed by “first principles.” Existing research suggests that, as machine learning is further coupled to quantum mechanics, scientists and engineers will better predict products, yields, and compositions, as well as more complicated features such as ideal reactor design.
