Immobilizing Metal Nanoparticles on Hierarchically Porous Organic Cages with Size Control for Enhanced Catalysis

Incorporating metal nanoparticles (MNPs) into porous composites with controlled size and spatial distributions is beneficial for a broad range of applications, but it remains a synthetic challenge. Here, we present a method to immobilize a series of highly dispersed MNPs (Pd, Ir, Pt, Rh, and Ru) with controlled size (<2 nm) on hierarchically micro- and mesoporous organic cage supports. Specifically, the metal-ionic surfactant complexes serve as both metal precursors and mesopore-forming agents during self-assembly with a microporous imine cage CC3, resulting in a uniform distribution of metal precursors across the resultant supports. The functional heads on the ionic surfactants as binding sites, together with the nanoconfinement of pores, guide the nucleation and growth of MNPs and prevent their agglomeration after chemical reduction. Moreover, the as-synthesized Pd NPs exhibit remarkable activity and selectivity in the tandem reaction due to the advantages of ultrasmall particle size and improved mass diffusion facilitated by the hierarchical pores.

Beyond Microporosity in Porous Organic Molecular Materials (POMMs)

Porous organic molecular materials (POMMs) are a novel class of porous materials that cover a wide range of organic-based molecular building blocks connected through weak supramolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, π-π stacking, van der Waals and electrostatic interactions. Despite of their diverse chemical and structural nature, common features to POMMs include solution processability, crystallinity and microporosity. Herein, we focus, for the first time, on the advance of the field of POMMs beyond the archetypical microporosity. In particular, we highlight relevant examples of meso- and macroporous POMMs, as well as hierchachical ones (micro-/meso-, micro-/macro- and meso-/macroporous). We also remark some of their unique properties, and how they can be key in many applications.

Multivariate Porous Aromatic Frameworks with High Porosity and Hierarchical Structures for Enzyme Immobilization

As materials with permanently porous structures and readily modifying availability, porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) are considered as promising porous materials with versatile functionality. Currently the designable synthesis of PAFs with the desired surface area and pore size is still a challenge, and instead kinetically irreversible coupling reactions for PAFs synthesis has resulted in the unpredictable connection of building units. Herein, a series of PAFs with highly porous and hierarchical structures were successfully synthesized through a multivariate inspired strategy, where multiple building units with various topologies and sizes were selected for PAFs synthesis. All the PAFs synthesized through this strategy possessed hierarchical structures and high specific surface areas at the same time. Encouraged by their high surface area and hierarchical structures, we loaded lipase onto one of the multivariate PAFs. The enzyme loading content of the obtained lipase@PAF-147 was as high as 1456 mg g^-1, which surpassed any other currently reported enzyme loading materials. The lipase@PAF-147 also exhibited favorable catalytic activity and stability to a model reaction of p-nitrophenyl caprylate (p-NPC) hydrolysis. This multivariate strategy inspired synthetic method broadens the selection of building units for PAFs design and opens a new avenue for the design of functional porous materials.

Hierarchical Assembly of a Micro- and Macroporous Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework with Tailored Single-Crystal Size

Porous organic molecular materials represent an emergent field of research in Chemistry and Materials Science due to their unique combination of properties. To enhance their performance and expand the number of applications, the incorporation of hierarchical porosity is required, as exclusive microporosity entails several limitations. However, the integration of macropores in porous organic molecular materials is still an outstanding challenge. Herein, we report the first example of a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (MM-TPY) with hierarchical skeletal morphology, containing stable micro- and macroporosity. The crystal size, from micro to centimetre scale, can be controlled in a single step without using additives or templates. The mechanism of assembly during the crystal formation is compatible with a skeletal crystal growth. As proof of concept, we employed the hierarchical porosity as a platform for the dual, sequential and selective co-recognition of molecular species and microparticles.
