Applications of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to heavy main-group radicals

The exploration of heavy main-group radicals is rapidly expanding, for which electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic characterisation plays a key role. EPR spectroscopy has the capacity to deliver information of the radical's electronic, geometric and bonding structure. Herein, foundations of electron-nuclear hyperfine analysis are detailed before reviewing more recent applications of EPR spectroscopy to As, Sb, and Bi centred radicals. Additional diverse examples of the application of EPR spectroscopy to other heavy main group radicals are highlighted.

Synthesis and structure of tri- and octaindium compounds

The reactions of InCp* with alkali metal silanides M(thf)(n)SiRPh(2) (R = Me, Ph) resulted in the triindanate [(Ph(3)Si)(3)In-In-In(SiPh(3))](-) with a linear arrangement of In atoms and the octaindium clusters [(In(8)(SiPh(3))(8)](m-) (m = 0, 2) amongst others, which were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The neutral cluster has a bisphenoidal core similar to that of B(8)Cl(8), whilst the anionic one adopts a distorted square antiprismatic structure. In addition, the tri- and octaindium compounds were studied by DFT calculations.

Oxygen-centered hexatantalum tetradecaimido cluster complexes

The syntheses and characterization of several octahedral hexatantalum cluster compounds of formula (ArN)14Ta6O are described (Ar=Ph, p-MeC6H4, p-MeOC6H4, p-t-BuC6H4, p-BrC6H4, m-ClC6H4). Treatment of Bn3Ta=N-t-Bu (Bn=CH2C6H5) or pentakis(dimethylamido)tantalum with an excess of the appropriate aniline and stoichiometric water or tantalum oxide afforded varying yields of arylimido clusters. The structures of two species were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), while the identity of the central oxygen atom was elucidated by electrospray mass spectrometry (MS) using 17O/18O-enriched material. The title species are very air- and moisture-sensitive but quite thermally stable in solution. Experimentally determined optical properties and oxidation/reduction potentials, as well as some computational results, indicate that they possess an electronic structure wherein the highest occupied molecular orbitals are ligand-centered, while the lowest unoccupied orbitals are metal-centered and delocalized throughout the tantalum cage. Whereas chemical oxidation resulted in cluster decomposition, reduction with decamethylcobaltocene yielded stable salts of formula [Cp*2Co][(ArN)14Ta6O] (Ar=Ph, Ar=p-MeC6H4). Small-molecule reactivity studies on one of these clusters showed that its imido functionalities are moderately reactive toward oxide donors but inert with respect to metallaheterocycle-forming processes. Clean imido/oxo exchange was observed with aldehydes and ketones, leading cleanly to organic imines with no soluble byproducts being observed. This exchange was also observed with a rhenium oxo compound (generating an imidorhenium complex as the only soluble species). All 14 imido groups were transferred in these reactions, and no mixed-ligand cluster intermediates were ever observed.

Stable Mononuclear Radical Anions of Heavier Group 13 Elements: [(tBu2MeSi)3E•-]·[K+(2.2.2-Cryptand)] (E = Al, Ga)

The one-electron reduction of tris(di-tert-butylmethylsilyl)aluminum and -gallium with alkali metals (Li, Na, K) results in the formation of the corresponding radical anions [(tBu2MeSi)3Al*-] (3) and [(tBu2MeSi)3Ga]*- (4), which were isolated in the form of the potassium salt as extremely air- and moisture-sensitive deep red crystals, representing the first isolable mononuclear radical anions of heavier group 13 elements. The molecular structures of both 3.[K+(2.2.2-cryptand)] and 4.[K+(2.2.2-cryptand)] were established by X-ray crystallography, which showed a nearly planar geometry around the radical centers. The EPR spectra of 3 and 4 showed strong characteristic signals with g-values of 2.005 for 3 and 2.015 for 4 with hyperfine coupling constants of a(27Al) = 6.2 mT for 3, a(69Ga) = 12.3 mT, and a(71Ga) = 15.7 mT for 4, corresponding to a planar geometry of the radical center.
