Abstract
The family of cucurbiturils (CBs), the unique pumpkin-shaped macrocycles, has received great attention over the past four decades owing to their remarkable recognition properties. They have found diverse applications including biosensing and drug delivery technologies. The cucurbituril complexation of guest molecules can modulate their pKas, improve their solubility in aqueous solution, and reduce the adverse effects of the drugs, as well as enhance the stability and/or enable targeted delivery of the drug molecule. Employing twelve cationic styryl dyes with N-methyl- and N-phenylpiperazine functionality as probes, we attempted to understand the factors that govern the host-guest complexation of such molecules within CB[7] and CB[8] host systems. Various key factors determining the process were recognized, such as the pH and dielectric constant of the medium, the cavity size of the host, the chemical characteristics of the substituents in the guest entity, and the presence/absence of metal cations. The presented results add to our understanding (at the molecular level) of the mechanism of encapsulation of styryl dyes by cucurbiturils, thus shedding new light on various aspects of the intriguing complexation chemistry and the underlying recognition processes.

Abstract
Supercapacitors are essential for electrochemical energy storage because of their high-power density, good cycle stability, fast charging and discharging rates, and low maintenance cost. Macrocycles, including cucurbiturils, calixarene, and cyclodextrins, are cage-like organic compounds (with a nanocavity that contains O and N heteroatoms) with unique potential in supercapacitors. Here, we review the applications of macrocycles in supercapacitor systems, and we illustrate the merits of organic macrocycles in electrodes and electrolytes for improving the electrochemical double-layer capacitors and pseudocapacitance via supramolecular strategies. Then, the observed relationships between electrochemical performance and macrocyclic structures are introduced. This comprehensive review describes recent progress on macrocycle-block supercapacitors for researchers.

Abstract
Cucurbiturils (CBs), the pumpkin-shaped macrocycles, are suitable hosts for an array of neutral and cationic species. A plethora of host-guest complexes between CBs and a variety of guest molecules has been studied. However, much remains unknown, even in the complexation of very simple guests such as metal cations. In the computational study herein, DFT molecular modeling has been employed to investigate the interactions of a series of trivalent metal cations (Al3+, Ga3+, In3+, La3+, Lu3+) to cucurbit[n]urils and to evaluate the main factors controlling the host-guest complexation. The thermodynamic descriptors (Gibbs energies in the gas phase and in a water environment) of the corresponding complexation reactions have been estimated. This research is a logical continuation of an earlier study on the interaction between CB[n]s and a series of biologically essential mono- and divalent metal cations (Na+/K+ and Mg2+/Ca2+, respectively).

Abstract
The recognition and separation of anions attracts attention from chemists, materials scientists, and engineers. Employing exo-binding of artificial macrocycles to selectively recognize anions remains a challenge in supramolecular chemistry. We report the instantaneous co-crystallization and concomitant co-precipitation between [PtCl6 ]2- dianions and cucurbit[6]uril, which relies on the selective recognition of these dianions through noncovalent bonding interactions on the outer surface of cucurbit[6]uril. The selective [PtCl6 ]2- dianion recognition is driven by weak [Pt-Cl⋅⋅⋅H-C] hydrogen bonding and [Pt-Cl⋅⋅⋅C=O] ion-dipole interactions. The synthetic protocol is highly selective. Recognition is not observed in combinations between cucurbit[6]uril and six other Pt- and Pd- or Rh-based chloride anions. We also demonstrated that cucurbit[6]uril is able to separate selectively [PtCl6 ]2- dianions from a mixture of [PtCl6 ]2- , [PdCl4 ]2- , and [RhCl6 ]3- anions. This protocol could be exploited to recover platinum from spent vehicular three-way catalytic converters and other platinum-bearing metal waste.

Abstract
Self-assembly between symmetrical dicyclohexyl-substituted cucurbit[6]uril (abbreviated as (CyH)2Q[6]) and cyclopentanocucurbit[6]uril (CyP6Q[6]) as hosts and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine (MeOPP) as a guest molecule has been studied by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, NMR, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and other characterization methods. The experimental results showed that the self-assembly was driven by the formation of exclusion complexes by the cucurbit[n]uril and the guest, that is, supramolecular interaction between the negative charge of the cucurbit[n]uril portals and a coordination polymer guest. Complexes were formed between the positive charge of the cucurbit[n]uril outer wall and inorganic anions, thus generating self-assemblies with multi-dimensional and multi-level supramolecular frameworks.

Abstract
Tuning the properties of atomic crystals in the two-dimensional (2D) limit is synthetically challenging, but critical to unlock their potential in fundamental research and nanotechnology alike. 2D crystals assembled using superatomic blocks could provide a route to encrypt desirable functionality, yet strategies to link the inorganic blocks together in predetermined dimensionality or symmetry are scarce. Here, we describe the synthesis of anisotropic van der Waals crystalline frameworks using the designer superatomic nanocluster Co3(py)3Co6Se8L6 (py = pyridine, L = Ph2PN(Tol)), and ditopic linkers. Post-synthetically, the 3D crystals can be mechanically exfoliated into ultrathin flakes (8 to 60 nm), or intercalated with the redox-active guest tetracyanoethylene in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation. Extensive characterization, including by single crystal X-ray diffraction, reveals how intrinsic features of the nanocluster, such as its structure, chirality, redox-activity and magnetic profile, predetermine key properties of the emerging 2D structures. Within the nanosheets, the strict and unusual stereoselectivity of the nanocluster's Co edges for the low symmetry (α,α,β) isomer gives rise to in-plane structural anisotropy, while the helically chiral nanoclusters self-organize into alternating Δ- and Λ-homochiral rows. The nanocluster's high-spin Co edges, and its rich redox profile make the nanosheets both magnetically and electrochemically active, as revealed by solid state magnetic and cyclic voltammetry studies. The length and flexibility of the ditopic linker was varied, and found to have a secondary effect on the structure and stacking of the nanosheets within the 3D crystals. With these results we introduce a deterministic and versatile synthetic entry to programmable functionality and symmetry in 2D superatomic crystals.

Abstract
Supramolecular complexes based on classical synthetic macrocyclic host molecules such as cyclodextrins and calixarenes have received much attention recently due to their broad applications as biological and chemical sensors, bioimaging agents, drug delivery carriers, light-emitting materials, etc. Cucurbit[n]urils comprise another group of cavitands known for their high affinity for various guest molecules. Nonetheless, some aspects of their coordination chemistry remain enigmatic. Although they are recognized as potential biomimetic scaffolds, they are still not tested as metalloenzyme models and not much is known about their metal-binding properties. Furthermore, there is no systematic study on the key factors controlling the processes of metal coordination to these systems. In the computational study herein, DFT molecular modeling has been employed in order to investigate the interactions of biologically essential (mono- and divalent) metal cations to cucurbit[n]urils and evaluate the major determinants shaping the process. The thermodynamic descriptors (Gibbs energies in the gas phase and in a water medium) of the corresponding complexation reactions have been estimated. The results obtained shed light on the mechanism of host-guest recognition and disclose which factors more specifically affect the metal binding process.

Abstract
Cucurbit[10]uril {Q[10]} has the largest portal size and cavity in the series of Q[n] (n = 5-10) molecules. In contrast to its rich host-guest chemistry, its coordination chemistry is underdeveloped with only limited metal ions being investigated so far. In this work, we initiated the study of Q[10] complexes with Th(iv) and U(vi) ions in HCl solutions via a self-assembly approach. The coordination of Th(iv) ions with Q[10] led to the formation of a compound, {Th4(Cl)16(H2O)20(Q[10])}·nH2O (Q[10]-Th), with a unique nano-tubular structure, while U(vi) ions facilitated the formation of a compound, [(UO2)2(Cl)4(H2O)6]·(Q[10])2·HCl·nH2O (Q[10]-U), with a Q[10]-based supramolecular framework structure via intermolecular outer-surface and second-shell interactions. The structural and spectroscopic aspects of the two compounds together with their optical and thermal properties have been investigated. The successful preparation and characterization of the first two Q[10] compounds with Th(iv)/U(vi) ions highlighted the potential for further exploration of Q[10] coordination chemistry with actinide ions.

Abstract
Lanthanoid heteroleptic complexes with cucurbit[5]uril {Q[5]} and two dicarboxylate ligands, e.g., diglycolic acid (H2DGC) and glutaric acid (H2GT), have been investigated with six new compounds featuring a tetrametallic and dimetallic discrete structures, a one-dimensional (1D) polymer, and three two-dimensional (2D) polymers with a unique honeycomb-type topology being synthesized and structurally characterized. [La4(Q[5])3(DGC)2(NO3)2(H2O)12][La(DGC)(H2O)6]·7NO3· nH2O (1) has a tetrametallic structure constructed with three bis-bidentate Q[5] ligands linking two [La(DGC)(H2O)2]+ species in the middle and two [La(H2O)4(NO3)]2+ species at both ends. [Ce2(Q[5])(DGC)(NO3)(H2O)10]·3NO3·4H2O (2) has a dimetallic structure built up with a bis-bidentate Q[5] ligand linking [Ce(DGC)(H2O)3(NO3)] and [Ce(H2O)7]3+ on each side of the Q[5] portals. [Ce3(Q[5])3(DGC)2(H2O)9][Ce(DGC)(H2O)6]2·7NO3· nH2O (3) has a 1D polymeric structure built up with bis-bidentate Q[5] ligands in-turn linking one [Ce(H2O)6]3+ and two [Ce(DGC)(H2O)6]1+ cationic species. [Ln2(Q[5])2(GT)(H2O)6]·4NO3· nH2O [Ln = La (4), Ce (5) and Nd (6)] have similar 2D polymeric structures built up with two types of 9-fold coordinated Ln polyhedra linked by Q[5] via bis-bidentate carbonyl groups on both sides forming 1D chains which are further connected by bridging GT2- ligands to form 2D polymers with a unique honeycomb-type topology. Their vibrational modes and electronic structures have also been investigated.

Abstract
Tetravalent thorium and uranium complexes with cucurbit[5]uril (Q[5]) were investigated with eight new complexes being synthesized and structurally characterized. [Th(Q[5])(OH)(H2O)2]6·18NO3· nH2O (1) has a hexagonal nanowheel structure with each of the six Th4+ ions being cap-coordinated by a Q[5] and monodentate-coordinated to the nearby Q[5]. [Th(Q[5])(HCOO)(H2O)4][Th(NO3)5(H2O)2]2[Th(NO3)3(HCOO)(H2O)2]0.5·NO3· nH2O (2) has a heteroleptic mononuclear structure with a Th4+ ion cap-coordinated on one side of the Q[5] portal and monodentate-coordinated to a formate anion inside the Q[5] cavity. [KTh1.5(Q[5])Cl(NO3)3][Th(NO3)5(H2O)2]·2NO3·2.5H2O (3) has a heterometallic structure with both Th4+ and K+ ions each occupying one side of the two Q[5] portals forming a capsule. [CsTh(Q[5])Cl(NO3)2(H2O)3]·2NO3· nH2O (4) has a heterometallic 1D polymeric structure with both Th4+ and Cs+ ions each occupying one side of the two Q[5] portals, forming monomers which are linked together by sharing two water molecules and one carbonyl oxygen atom between Th4+ and Cs+ ions. [Th(Q[5])Cl(H2O)][CdCl3][CdCl4]·0.5HCl·4H2O (5), [Th(Q[5])Cl(H2O)][Ru2OCl9(H2O)]·0.5HCl·9.5H2O (6), [Th(Q[5])Cl(H2O)][IrCl6]1.5·3H2O (7), and [U(Q[5])Cl(H2O)][ZnCl3(H2O)][(ZnCl4)]·8H2O (8) have similar 1D polymeric structures with Th4+/U4+ ions cap-coordinated on one side of a Q[5] and bidentate coordinated to the nearby Q[5]. The transition metal chlorides act as anions for charge compensation as well as structure inducers via cation-anion interactions forming various anion patterns around the 1D polymers. Actinide contraction has been observed in the early actinide series.

Abstract
The self-assembly into dynamic oligomers of Cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), a positive ditopic Ir(III) bis-terpyridine complex, and a negative ditopic Fe(II) bis-terpyridine complex flanked by four butyrate side chains was assessed to answer a seemingly straightforward question: does CB[8] adopt a social self-sorting pattern by encapsulating both positive and negative units into a heteroternary complex? We showed that this is indeed the case, with CB[8] linking a positive Ir unit to a neighboring negative Fe unit whenever possible. Furthermore, the solubility of the dynamic oligomers was significantly affected by their sequence; upon addition of 0.6-1.2 equiv of positive Ir oligomer to its negative Fe counterpart, the predominant assembly present in solution was a mixed oligomer with a (Fe-Ir-Ir-) n sequence. Weak interactions between the negative butyrate side chains and the partially positive outer wall of CB[7] were also identified by two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, and resulted in a negative p Ka shift (0.10 p Ka unit) for the terminal carboxylic groups.

Abstract
Supramolecular architectures and materials have attracted immense attention during the last decades because they not only open the possibility of obtaining a large variety of aesthetically interesting structures but also have applications in gas storage, sensors, separation, catalysis, and so on. On the other hand, cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s), a relatively new class of macrocyclic hosts with a rigid hydrophobic cavity and two identical carbonyl fringed portals, have attracted much attention in supramolecular chemistry. Because of the strong charge-dipole and hydrogen bonding interactions, as well as hydrophobic and hydrophilic effect derived from the negative portals and rigid cavities of Q[n]s, nearly all research in Q[n]s has been focused on utilizing the portals and cavities to construct supramolecular assemblies similar to other macrocyclic receptors such as cyclodextrin and calixarenes. Interestingly, a recent study revealed that other weak noncovalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding and π···π stacking, as well as C-H···π and ion-dipole interactions, could also be defined as "outer-surface interactions", which are derived from the electrostatically positive outer surface of Q[n]s. These interactions could be the driving forces in the formation of various novel Q[n]-based supramolecular architectures and functional materials. In this Account, we provide a comprehensive overview of supramolecular self-assemblies based on the outer-surface interactions of Q[n]s. These outer-surface interactions include those between Q[n]s, Q[n]s and aromatic molecules, Q[n]s and calixarenes, Q[n]s and inorganic complex ions, and Q[n]s and polyoxometalates. Pioneering work has shown that such weak noncovalent interactions play very important roles in the formation of various Q[n]-based functional materials and supramolecular architectures. For example, hydrogen bonds in outer-surface interactions between Q[n] molecules not only function as the sole driving force in the formation of one-dimensional Q[n] porous channels but also assist the bonding forces of the channels in capturing and accommodating acetylene molecules and carbon dioxide in the channel cavities. Moreover, upon introduction of a third species such as an aromatic molecule or inorganic anion into the Q[n]/metal system, "outer-surface interactions" could lead to Q[n]/metal-based self-assemblies from simple finite supramolecular coordination complexes to infinite polydimensional supramolecular architectures and other structures. Overall, this Account focuses on the novel self-assembly driving force derived from Q[n]s including (i) concepts of the outer-surface interactions of Q[n]s, (ii) providing plausible explanations of the mechanisms of the outer-surface interactions of Q[n]s, and (iii) introduction of an overview of the developments and practical applications of outer-surface interactions of Q[n]s in supramolecular chemistry. It is hoped that this study based on the outer-surface interactions of Q[n]s can enrich the field of molecular engineering of functional supramolecular systems and provide new opportunities for the construction of functional materials and architectures.

Abstract
Cucurbit[n]urils are a family of molecular container hosts bearing a rigid hydrophobic cavity and two identical carbonyl fringed portals. They have attracted much attention in supramolecular chemistry because of their superior molecular recognition properties in aqueous media. This review highlights the recent advances and challenges in the field of cucurbit[n]uril-based coordination chemistry. It not only presents progress in the knowledge of such macrocyclic compounds, which range from simple to complicated architectures, but also presents new routes of synthesis and their advantages in hybrid porous solids. The concept of structure "inducer" for their structural design to achieve predictable structures and controlled pores is described. The large pore sizes and hydrophobic cavities of these compounds that lead to unprecedented properties and potential applications are also discussed.
