Intercalation of Organic Molecules into Vanadium(IV) Benzenedicarboxylate: Adsorbate Structure and Selective Absorption of Organosulfur Compounds

Facile solvothermal synthesis of a MIL-47(V) metal-organic framework for a high-performance Epoxy/MOF coating with improved anticorrosion properties

The vanadium-based metal–organic framework MIL-47 distinguishes itself among other MOFs for its distinctive structure and unique properties (e.g., flexible structure, high thermal stability, and high surface area). The synthesis of MIL-47 has been reported from various metal precursors, including vanadium(iii) chloride (VCl₃) as a rich source of metal ions. Attempts have been made to include other starting materials, a step forward towards large-scale production. Synthesis from various solid materials is encouraged, seeking an economic and greener approach. In this study, vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅), a readily abundant low-cost and thermodynamically stable metal source, was used to synthesize the MIL-47(V) framework via a facile solvothermal route. This precursor provides a controllable rate of metal ion production depending on the applied reaction conditions. In our method, the synthesis took place at a low temperature and reaction time (180 °C for 20 h, instead of 220 °C for 72 h), yielding MIL-47 microrods. Moreover, among its unique properties, the metal centers of MIL-47 oxidize under the influence of thermal or chemical treatments, preserving the framework structure. This unusual character is not commonly witnessed in comparable MOF structures. This property can be leveraged in anti-corrosion applications, whereby a redox reaction would sacrifice the framework components, protecting the metal in contact. However, the chemical stability of MIL-47 is doubted against a corrosive medium. Thus, an epoxy coating with 10 wt% MOF loading was incorporated in our investigation to extend the aluminum alloy (AA2024) surface protection for prolonged exposure duration. The uniformity of distribution of the prepared MOF within the epoxy matrix was confirmed using SEM/EDX. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to evaluate the corrosion performance of the coated samples. The results showed that the inclusion of V-MOF offers extended corrosion prevention, over 60 days, for the AA2024 alloy against artificial seawater. The neat epoxy coating could not prevent the corrosion of AA2024 over two weeks of immersion, whereby pitting corrosion was clearly observed. The V-MOF could induce a series of redox reactions leading to the precipitation of vanadium on the cathodic sites of metal surfaces.

The well-known MIL-47(V) metal–organic framework was synthesized solvothermally with high quality using V₂O₅ as a precursor. Applying the MOF particles in an epoxy coating resulted in an improved anticorrosion protective barrier for the AA2024 substrate against a chloride-rich environment.

Fabrication of UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary MOF/carboxylated-GO composite for adsorptive removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions

This study provides a novel composite as an efficient adsorbent of cationic methylene blue dye. UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary metal organic framework (MOF) was fabricated using a solvothermal technique. Additionally, the developed binary MOF was modified with carboxylated graphene oxide (GOCOOH) using a post-synthetic technique. The as-fabricated UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite was analyzed by FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, TGA, XPS and zeta potential analysis. The adsorption performance of UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite was examined for its aptitude to adsorb cationic MB dye using a batch technique. The obtained data revealed that, the developed UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite exhibited higher adsorption capacity compared to UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary MOF. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies revealed that MB dye adsorption onto UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite fitted a Langmuir isotherm model (q m = 448.71 mg g-1) and both pseudo 1st order and pseudo 2nd order kinetic models. An intra-particle diffusion model showed that the adsorption process occurs through three steps. Besides, thermodynamic data reflected that the adsorption of MB onto UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite is an endothermic and spontaneous process and the adsorption involves both physisorption and chemisorption interactions. The as-fabricated UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite exhibited good reusability and can be considered as a promising reusable adsorbent for the treatment of dye-containing industrial effluents with high efficiency.

Dye@Cd-LMOCs composites exhibit interesting solvent-dependent chromismic fluorescence, in which a two step solvent exchange process and a new electron transfer route are proposed.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as a Potential Platform for Selective Treatment of Gaseous Sulfur Compounds

The release of various anthropogenic pollutants such as gaseous sulfur compounds into the environment has been accelerated as globalization has promoted the production of high-quality products at lower prices. Because of strict enforcement of mitigation technologies, advanced materials have been developed to efficiently remove gaseous sulfur compounds released from various source processes. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials to treat sulfur compounds via adsorption, catalysis, or separation. Nonetheless, the practical applicability of MOFs is limited by a number of factors including loss of structural integrity after use, limited reusability of spent MOFs, and low stability toward omnipresent molecules (e.g., H₂O). Here, we provide a comprehensive assessment of MOF technology for the effective control of gaseous sulfur compounds. This review will thus help expand the fields of real-world application for MOFs with a roadmap for this highly challenging area of research.

Heterometallic Alkaline Earth-Lanthanide Ba(II)-La(III) Microporous Metal-Organic Framework as Bifunctional Luminescent Probes of Al(3+) and MnO4(.)

In this work a rigid asymmetrical tricarboxylate ligand p-terphenyl-3,4″,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3L) has been employed, and a unique heterometallic alkaline earth-lanthanide microporous luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF) {[Ba3La0.5(μ3-L)2.5(H2O)3(DMF)]·(3DMF)}n (1·3DMF) (DMF = dimethylformamide) has been isolated under solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis demonstrates that 2D inorganic Ba-O-La connectivity can be observed in 1, which are further bridged via rigid terphenyl backbones of L(3-), forming a unique I(2)O(1)-type microporous luminescent framework. A 1D microporous channel with dimensionality of 9.151(3) Å × 10.098(1) Å can be observed along the crystallographic a axis. PXRD patterns have been investigated indicating pure phases of 1. The luminescence explorations demonstrated that 1 exhibits highly selective and sensitive sensing for Al(3+) over other cations with high quenching efficiency Ksv value of 1.445 × 10(4) L·mol(-1) and low detection limit (1.11 μM (S/N = 3)). Meanwhile 1 also exhibits highly selective and sensitive sensing for MnO4(-) over other anions with quenching efficiency Ksv = 7.73 × 10(3) L·mol(-1) and low detection limit (0.28 μM (S/N = 3)). It is noted that, when different concentrations of MnO4(-) solutions (0.5 to 100 μM) were dropped into the suspension of 1, the bright blue luminescence of the suspension observed under UV light can gradually change into pink color, indicating visually luminescent sensing, which makes the detection process of MnO4(-) more convenient in practical. The result also reveals that 1 represents the first example of bifunctional heterometallic alkaline earth-lanthanide MOF-based luminescent probes for selectively detecting Al(3+) and MnO4(-) in the water solutions.

Highly selective adsorption and separation of aniline/phenol from aqueous solutions by microporous MIL-53(Al): a combined experimental and computational study

Experimental measurements have been combined with molecular simulations to investigate the adsorption and separation of aniline/phenol mixtures from aqueous solutions by the aluminum terephthalate MIL-53. The results show that the framework flexibility of this material plays a crucial role in the adsorption process and thus can greatly enhance the separation of the aniline/phenol mixture from their solutions. Compared with the conventional adsorbents, MIL-53(Al) shows the best performance for such systems of interest, from the points of view of both the adsorption capacities and the selectivities for aniline. The findings obtained in this work may facilitate more investigations in connection with the application of flexible nanoporous materials for the separation of organic compounds from liquid-phase environments.

Quasi-1D physics in metal-organic frameworks: MIL-47(V) from first principles

The geometric and electronic structure of the MIL-47(V) metal-organic framework (MOF) is investigated by using ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Special focus is placed on the relation between the spin configuration and the properties of the MOF. The ground state is found to be antiferromagnetic, with an equilibrium volume of 1554.70 Å(3). The transition pressure of the pressure-induced large-pore-to-narrow-pore phase transition is calculated to be 82 MPa and 124 MPa for systems with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic chains, respectively. For a mixed system, the transition pressure is found to be a weighted average of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic transition pressures. Mapping DFT energies onto a simple-spin Hamiltonian shows both the intra- and inter-chain coupling to be antiferromagnetic, with the latter coupling constant being two orders of magnitude smaller than the former, suggesting the MIL-47(V) to present quasi-1D behavior. The electronic structure of the different spin configurations is investigated and it shows that the band gap position varies strongly with the spin configuration. The valence and conduction bands show a clear V d-character. In addition, these bands are flat in directions orthogonal to VO6 chains, while showing dispersion along the the direction of the VO6 chains, similar as for other quasi-1D materials.
