Abstract
The combination of different pyridyl ligands and metal ions has proven to be a very reliable strategy for controlling the coordination mode of the heterometallic coordination nano-cages. Adjusting the length of the ligands could result in the selective synthesis of several heterometallic coordination nano-cages, either [8Rh + 2M]-4L, [8Rh + 2M]-5L or [8Rh + 4M]-6L cages, derived from the very same precursors (LH3tzdc) through half-sandwich rhodium self-assembly. Moreover, a series of [8Rh + 4M]-6L cages was chosen to exemplify the preparation. The rigidity of various pyridyl donor ligands caused the vertical nano-cage to be energetically preferred and was able to change the self-assembly process through ligand flexibility to selectively give the inclined nano-cage and cross nano-cage.

Abstract
Using 4-(4'-pyridyl)aniline as a simple organic building block in combination with three different aldehyde components together with metal(II) salts gave three different Fe8 Pt6 -cubes and their corresponding Zn8 Pt6 analogues by employing the subcomponent self-assembly approach. Whereas the use of zinc(II) salts gave rise to diamagnetic cages, iron(II) salts yielded metallosupramolecular cages that show spin-crossover behaviour in solution. The spin-transition temperature T1/2 depends on the incorporated aldehyde component, giving a construction kit for the deliberate synthesis of spin-crossover compounds with tailored transition properties. Incorporation of 4-thiazolecarbaldehyde or N-methyl-2-imidazole-carbaldehyde yielded cages that undergo spin-crossover around room temperature whereas the cage obtained using 1H-4-imidazolecarbaldehyde shows a spin-transition at low temperatures. Three new structures were characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and all structures were characterized by mass spectrometry, NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy.

Abstract
Well-ordered combination of defined coordination spheres and multiple types of ligands (heteroleptic) in a given structure can expand the structural complexity and functional diversity of the resulting metallosupramolecules. Such heteroleptic metallosupramolecular architectures are expected to afford advanced utility in a variety of applications. In this concise review article, recent advances in the development of multi-nuclear-cluster-based heteroleptic multiple-stranded (HLMS) metallosupramolecules are summarized and demonstrated. To construct HLMS metallosupramolecules, one type of multitopic ligands can be employed for building up multiple strands, while another type of ligands can be utilized to construct multi-nuclear clusters. Most HLMS metallosupramolecules adopt helical geometries and have high molecular symmetry, which can be key factors for the structural completion. HLMS metallosupramolecules can be used as basic building blocks for the fabrication of higher-order polymeric or discrete assembly architectures with well-defined geometries.

Abstract
The title complex is a triple-stranded metallohelicate organized by the self-assembly of 5,17-difunctionalized calix[4]arenes and metal cations with octahedral coordination geometry. Due to hydrophilic triethylene glycol chains on the lower rim of the calix[4]arene, the metallohelicate can encapsulate cationic guests in water. NMR and UV-vis titration experiments reveal that the metallohelicate captures a pyridinium guest with an alanine derivative to form a host-guest complex with a host-guest ratio of 1 : 1. CD spectroscopy confirms the bias of the P- and M-helical sense of the metallohelicate by the captured guest. The metallohelicate captures two molecules of dicationic N,N'-dimethyl-DABCO and monocationic N-methyl quinuclidine, exhibiting a positive allosteric effect. 1 H NMR titration experiments indicate that the bound guests are in close proximately to the aromatic rings of the ligands. Molecular mechanics calculations based on the UV-vis and NMR observations suggest that the first guest preorganizes the conformation of the metallohelicate to facilitate access of the second guest to the cavity.

Abstract
Metallosupramolecular chemistry has attracted the interest of generations of researches due to the versatile properties and functionalities of oligonuclear coordination complexes. Quite a number of different discrete cages were investigated, mostly consisting of only one type of ligand and one type of metal cation. Looking for ever more complex structures, heterobimetallic complexes became more and more attractive, as they give access to new structural motifs and functions. In the last years substantial success has been made in the design and synthesis of cages consisting of more than one type of metal cations, and a rapidly growing number of functional materials has appeared in the literature. This Minireview describes recent developments in the field of discrete heterometallic macrocycles and cages focusing on functional materials that have been used as host‐systems or as magnetic, photo‐active, redox‐active, and even catalytically active materials.

Abstract
Different types of multinuclear half-sandwich rhodium macrocycles and cages were designed and synthesized by using two similar multifunctional hydroxamate ligands (pyrazine-2-hydroxamic acid (NaHL1 ) and 4,4'-bipyridine-2-hydroxamic acid (KHL2 )) featuring one monodentate site and two pairs of chelating sites. The RhIII -PdII heterometallic macrocycles were constructed by using the semi-open palladium(II) source [Pd(en)Cl2 ] with two free acceptor sites. However, only one kind of macrocycle was found when the shorter ligand L1 was used, while in for the larger ligand, various spectroscopic techniques demonstrated the coexistence of hexanuclear and octanuclear macrocycles in solution and the proportions of both components depended on concentration and temperature. The palladium salt Pd(NO3 )2 , as a source of "naked" Pd2+ , was introduced to assemble the cuboid-shaped cage composed of two types of metal ions and three types of organic ligands. In addition, two silver(I)-containing mixed-metal complexes bridged by pyrazine were obtained, in which two forms of decanuclear complex with C2v and C2h point symmetry cocrystallized-one is a polymeric structure and the other is a discrete cage. However, the third form, with D2 point symmetry, was found in the larger cage.

Abstract
A continuous shape measures analysis of the coordination polyhedra of a host of transition metal complexes with bi- and multidentate ligands discloses the distortion pathway associated with each particular topology of the chelate rings formed. The basic parameter that controls the degree of distortion is the metal-donor atom bond distance that induces nonideal bond angles due to the rigidity of the ligands. Thus, the degree of distortion within each family of complexes depends on the atomic size, on which the high- or low-spin state has a large effect. Special attention is therefore paid to several spin-crossover systems and to the enhanced distortions that go along with the transition from low- to high-spin state affected by temperature, light, or pressure. Several families of complexes show deviations from the expected distortion pathways in the high-spin state that can be associated to the onset of intermolecular interactions such as secondary coordination of counterions or solvent molecules. Also, significant displacement of counterions in an extended solid may result from the changes in metal-ligand bond distances when ligands are involved in intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
A monooxotungsten(iv) benzenedithiolate complex containing two intramolecular NHS hydrogen bonds, (NEt4)2[W(IV)O(1,2-S2-3-t-BuNHCOC6H3)2] (1-W), was synthesized via a ligand-exchange reaction between a new starting complex, (NEt4)2[W(IV)O(SC6F5)4], and a partially deprotonated dithiol. When dithiol was used in solution, the oxo ligand was protonated and removed to afford (NEt4)2[W(IV)(1,2-S2-3-t-BuNHCOC6H3)3]. The trans isomer, trans-1-W, was crystallized, and the molecular structure was determined via X-ray analysis. Trans-1-W was gradually isomerized by heating it in solution and it eventually achieved an approximately 1 : 1 mixture of trans/cis isomers after 48 days. However, a slightly excess amount of trans isomer remained, so the isomerization rate was considerably slower than that of the molybdenum analogue. In the presence of NEt4BH4, deuteration of the NH protons was observed in acetonitrile-d3. The oxidation of both trans- and cis-1-W by Me3NO afforded the corresponding dioxotungsten(vi) complex, (NEt4)2[W(VI)O2(1,2-S2-3-t-BuNHCOC6H3)2] (2-W), as a single isomer. The contributions of the NHS hydrogen bonds to the bond distances, vibrational data, and electrochemical properties are described via comparisons with their molybdenum analogues. The results of this comparative study yielded insights into both tungsten and molybdenum enzymes.

Abstract
Stepwise preparation of the heterometallic octanuclear coordination cages [(M(a))4(M(b))4L12](16+) is reported, in which M(a) = Ru or Os and M(b) = Cd or Co (all in their +2 oxidation state). This requires initial preparation of the kinetically inert mononuclear complexes [(M(a))L3](2+) in which L is a ditopic ligand with two bidentate chelating pyrazolyl-pyridine units: in the complexes [(M(a))L3](2+) one terminus of each ligand is bound to the metal ion, such that the complex has three pendant bidentate sites at which cage assembly can propagate by coordination to additional labile ions M(b) in a separate step. Thus, combination of four [(M(a))L3](2+) units and four [M(b)](2+) ions results in assembly of the complete cages [(M(a))4(M(b))4L12](16+) in which a metal ion lies at each of the eight vertices, and a bridging ligand spans each of the twelve edges, of a cube. The different types of metal ion necessarily alternate around the periphery with each bridging ligand bound to one metal ion of each type. All four cages have been structurally characterised: in the Ru(ii)/Cd(ii) cage (reported in a recent communication) the Ru(ii) and Cd(ii) ions are crystallographically distinct; in the other three cages [Ru(ii)/Co(ii), Os(ii)/Cd(ii) and Os(ii)/Co(ii), reported here] the ions are disordered around the periphery such that every metal site refines as a 50 : 50 mixture of the two metal atom types. The incorporation of Os(ii) units into the cages results in both redox activity [a reversible Os(ii)/Os(iii) couple for all four metal ions simultaneously, at a modest potential] and luminescence [the Os(ii) units have luminescent (3)MLCT excited states which will be good photo-electron donors] being incorporated into the cage superstructure.

Abstract
Single diastereomer, diamagnetic, octahedral Fe(II) tris chelate complexes are synthesised that contain three pendant pyridine proligands pre-organised for coordination to a second metal. They bind Cu(I) and Ag(I) with coordination geometry depending on the identity of the metal and the detail of the ligand structure, but for example homohelical (ΔFe,ΔCu) configured systems with unusual trigonal planar Cu cations are formed exclusively in solution as shown by VT-NMR and supported by DFT calculations. Similar heterobimetallic tris(triazole) complexes are synthesised via clean CuAAC reactions at a tris(alkynyl) complex, although here the configurations of the two metals differ (ΔFe,ΛCu), leading to the first optically pure heterohelicates. A second series of Fe complexes perform less well in either strategy as a result of lack of preorganisation.

Abstract
The reaction of K(2)ReCl(6) with 1,2-bis(2,3-dimercaptobenzamido)ethane (H(4)-1), and 1,2-bis(2,3-dimercaptobenzamido)benzene (H(4)-2) in the presence of Na(2)CO(3) in methanol affords dinuclear complexes of Re(V). Experimental evidence supports the presence of self-assembled complexes with two {Re(S(2)C(6)H(3))(3)} units connected in a triple-stranded fashion. Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies on geometry and electronic properties were conducted employing the hybrid B3LYP and PBE1PBE functionals. The helical (ΔΔ and ΛΛ) and meso-helical (ΔΛ) isomers were considered. For the helicate complexes included in this study, differences in the stability of the isomers were observed originating in different steric and strain interactions between the three ligand strands. The geometries at the minimum exhibit a distorted trigonal-prismatic coordination environment at the metal centers. Natural bond orbitals (NBO) analysis indicates the presence of Re-S bonds which are strongly polarized toward the non-metal. Time-Dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations were performed for a further understanding of the optical spectra. The calculations show the occupied 5d orbitals of the rhenium lying beneath occupied sulfur-based MOs. The general features of the electronic spectra in the visible region are reasonably reproduced by the calculations. The analysis of molecular orbitals also allows the assignment of the origin for all experimentally detected absorption bands. In the high-energy region of the spectrum the absorptions are attributed to ligand-to-metal-ligand charge transfer (LMLCT), in which sulfur-based orbitals and unoccupied orbitals at the rhenium atom and the benzene-o-dithiolato groups are involved. Also in the blue region, shoulders originating from LMLCT are observed.
