Abstract
The development of new materials for solar-to-energy conversion should consider stability, ease of fabrication, and beneficial photophysical properties. In this context, a set of novel π-conjugated building blocks, with phospha- and arsaalkenes possessing a unique dithienyl annulated heterofulvenoid core, have been prepared as air- and moisture-stable sensitizers. These compounds unify electron-donor and -acceptor moieties, making them potential candidates for light-harvesting applications. Optical characterization of these systems was performed by steady-state and time-resolved absorption spectroscopy, supported by time-dependent DFT calculations. Tuning of the optical properties of these systems can be achieved by varying the pnictogen element at the bridgehead position, giving a bathochromic shift of ≈40 nm and coordinating the phosphaalkene towards gold AuI centers. The latter results in a ≈2000-fold extension of the ≈10 ps lifetime of uncoordinated systems well into the ns regime.

Abstract
The first direct alkynylation of C,C-dibromophosphaalkenes by a reaction with sulfonylacetylenes is reported. Alkynylation proceeds selectively in the trans position relative to the P substituent to afford bromoethynylphosphaalkenes. Owing to the absence of transition metals in the procedure, the previously observed conversion of dibromophosphaalkenes into phosphaalkynes through the phosphorus analog of the Fritsch-Buttenberg-Wiechell rearrangement is thus suppressed. The bromoethynylphosphaalkenes can subsequently be converted to C,C-diacetylenic, cross-conjugated phosphaalkenes by following a Sonogashira coupling protocol in good overall yields. By using the newly described method, full control over the stereochemistry at the P=C double bond is achieved. The substrate scope of this reaction is demonstrated for different dibromophosphaalkenes as well as different sulfonylacetylenes.

Abstract
Acetylenic phosphaalkenes (APAs) are used as a novel type of ligands for the stabilization of gold nanoparticles (AuNP). As demonstrated by a variety of experimental and analytical methods, both structural features of the APA, that is, the P=C as well as the C≡C units are essential for NP stabilization. The presence of intact APAs on the AuNP is demonstrated by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), and first principle calculations indicate that bonding occurs most likely at defect sites on the Au surface. AuNP-bound APAs are in chemical equilibrium with free APAs in solution, leading to a dynamic behavior that can be explored for facile place-exchange reactions with other types of anchor groups such as thiols or more weakly binding phosphine ligands.

Abstract
Phosphole-substituted phosphaalkenes (PPAs) of the general formula Mes*P=C(CH(3))-(C(4)H(2)P(Ph))-R 5 a-c (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu(3)Ph; R=2-pyridyl (a), 2-thienyl (b), phenyl (c)) have been prepared from octa-1,7-diyne-substituted phosphaalkenes by utilizing the Fagan-Nugent route. The presence of two differently hybridized phosphorus centers (σ(2) ,λ(3) and σ(3) ,λ(3)) in 5 offers the possibility to selectively tune the HOMO-LUMO gap of the compounds by utilizing the different reactivity of the two phosphorus heteroatoms. Oxidation of 5 a-c by sulfur proceeds exclusively at the σ(3) ,λ(3) -phosphorus atom, thus giving rise to the corresponding thioxophospholes 6 a-c. Similarly, 5 a is selectively coordinated by AuCl at the σ(3),λ(3) -phosphorus atom. Subsequent second AuCl coordination at the σ(2),λ(3) -phosphorus heteroatom results in a dimetallic species that is characterized by a gold-gold interaction that provokes a change in π conjugation. Spectroscopic, electrochemical, and theoretical investigations show that the phosphaalkene and the phosphole both have a sizable impact on the electronic properties of the compounds. The presence of the phosphaalkene unit induces a decrease of the HOMO-LUMO gap relative to reference phosphole-containing π systems that lack a P=C substituent.

Abstract
An alternative synthesis of C-monoacetylenic phosphaalkenes trans-Mes*P=C(Me)(C≡CR) (Mes* = 2, 4, 6-tBu3Ph, R = Ph, SiMe3) from C-bromophosphaalkenes cis-Mes*P=C(Me)Br using standard Sonogashira coupling conditions is described. Crystallographic studies confirm cis-trans isomerization of the P=C double bond during Pd-catalyzed cross coupling, leading exclusively to trans-acetylenic phosphaalkenes. Crystallographic studies of all synthesized compounds reveal the extend of π-conjugation over the acetylene and P=C π-systems.

Abstract
Bis-TMS protected C,C-diacetylenic phosphaalkene (A(2)PA) 1 (Mes*P=C(C≡CTMS)(2); Mes* = 2,4,6-tBu(3)Ph) has been used as a building block for the construction of butadiyne-expanded dendralene fragments in which phosphaalkenes feature as exotopic double bonds. Treatment of 1 with CuCl gives rise to a Cu(I) acetylide that is selectively formed at the acetylene trans to the Mes* group. The cis-TMS-acetylene engages in similar chemistry, albeit at higher temperatures and longer reaction times. The differentiation between the two acetylene termini of 1 allows for the controlled synthesis of the title compounds by a variety of different Cu- and Pd-catalyzed oxidative acetylene homo- and heterocoupling protocols. Crystallographic characterization of A(2)PA 1 and dimeric Mes*P=C(C≡CR(1))C(4)(R(2) C≡C)C=PMes* (3b, R(1) = R(2) = Ph; 6, R(1) = R(2) = TMS), and 10 (R(1) = R(2) = C≡CPh) verifies that the stereochemistry across the P=C bond is conserved during the coupling reactions, whereas spectroscopic evidence reveals cis/trans isomerization in an iodo-substituted A(2)PA intermediate 4 (Mes*P=C(C≡CTMS)(C≡CI). UV/Vis spectroscopic and electrochemical studies reveal that efficient π conjugation operates through the entire acetylenic phosphaalkene framework, even in the cross-conjugated dimeric structures. The P centers contribute considerably to the frontier molecular orbitals of the compounds, thereby leading to smaller HOMO-LUMO gaps than in all-carbon-based congeners. Phenyl- and/or ethynylphenyl substituents at the A(2)PA framework influence the HOMO and LUMO to a varying degree depending on their relationship to the Mes* group, thus enabling a fine-tuning of the frontier molecular orbitals of the compounds.

Abstract
The reactivity of bis-TMS-substituted C,C-diacetylenic phosphaalkene (A(2)PA) 1 in Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-coupling reactions has been examined. The selective and successive deprotection of the two silyl groups in 1 is enabled by the steric bulk of the Mes* group which renders the acetylene trans to Mes* more reactive and thereby facilitates selective and consecutive couplings with iodoarenes. In situ transformation of the TMS-protected acetylenes into Cu(i)acetylides is the key step in the synthetic sequence and enables the preparation of the first dimeric A(2)PA linked by a phenylene spacer. cis-trans Isomerization across the P[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond is triggered by a tertiary amine and exclusively observed in the case of nitrophenyl-substituted A(2)PAs. The introduced aryl groups are integral parts of the entire π-system as evidenced by spectroscopic and electrochemical studies.

Abstract
Many parallels have been drawn between the chemistry of low-valent phosphorus and carbon. This Perspective is intended to highlight some emerging reactivity of phosphaalkenes, that is phospha-analogues of alkenes, in the areas of asymmetric catalysis and polymer science.

Abstract
Mind the (narrow) gap: Alpha-ethynylphospholes generated in situ from the corresponding silyl-capped precursors were converted into a series of alpha-(arylethynyl) phospholes bearing functional substituents as well as an alpha,alpha'-linked terphosphole (see scheme). The terphosphole has a narrow HOMO-LUMO gap owing to efficient pi conjugation over the three phosphole rings.
