Intermetallic Interactions Within Solvated Polynuclear Complexes: A Misunderstood Concept

Synthesis and Isolation of a Homochiral Nanohoop Composed of a Tröger's Base and Hexaparaphenylene

The synthesis of a new nanohoop containing a stereogenic Tröger's base skeleton tethered to a curved hexaparaphenylene ([6]CPP) is reported. The TB[6]CPP nanohoop possesses a stable C2 symmetrical structure, which promotes the allowed transition that gives rise to pale blue emission with a quantum yield of ~0.69, surpassing the value of the more symmetrical [8]CPP. Moreover, TB[6]CPP shows chiroptical properties including circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence with a moderate dissymmetry factor (|glum|) of ~2.1×10-3.

Remote stereocentres do not disrupt the stereochemical coupling in homochiral [M2L3] helicates and [M4L6] tetrahedra

Despite the use of achiral ligands, the vast majority of metallosupramolecular assemblies containing octahedral tris-bidentate metal centres show strong stereochemical communication between metal centres, generally resulting in homochiral assemblies even though they are statistically disfavoured. Here we show that when resolved stereocentres are attached to the central part of a quaterpyridine ligand, the stereochemical coupling from this centre is insufficient to disrupt the strong stereochemical communication between metal centres in both [M2L3] helicates and [M4L6] tetrahedra.

Sterics and metal-ion radius control the self-assembly of [M2L3] helicates

The interplay of many factors influences the outcomes of self-assembly reactions. Using an acetylene-appended quaterpyridine ligand we show that both the size of the metal ion and the presence of steric repulsion between the acetylene groups result in the exclusive formation of [M₂L₃] helicates rather than a helicate/tetrahedron equilibrium.

Counterintuitive Electrostatics upon Metal Ion Coordination to a Receptor with Two Homotopic Binding Sites

The consecutive binding of two potassium ions to a bis(18-crown-6) analogue of Tröger’s base (BCETB) in water was studied by isothermal titration calorimetry using four different salts, KCl, KI, KSCN, and K₂SO₄. A counterintuitive result was observed: the enthalpy change associated with the binding of the second ion is more negative than that of the first (ΔH_bind,2^° < ΔH_bind,1^°). This remarkable finding is supported by continuum electrostatic theory as well as by atomic scale replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations, where the latter robustly reproduces experimental trends for all simulated salts, KCl, KI, and KSCN, using multiple force fields. While an enthalpic K⁺–K⁺attraction in water poses a small, but fundamentally important, contribution to the overall interaction, the probability of the collapsed conformation (COL) of BCETB, where both crown ether moieties (CEs) of BCETB are bent in toward the cavity, was found to increase successively upon binding of the first and second potassium ions. The promotion of the COL conformation reveals favorable intrinsic interactions between the potassium coordinated CEs, which further contribute to the observation that ΔH_bind,2^° < ΔH_bind,1^°. While the observed trend is independent of the counterion, the origin of the significantly larger magnitude of the difference ΔH_bind,2^° – ΔH_bind,1^° observed experimentally for KSCN was studied in light of the weaker hydration of the thiocyanate anion, resulting in an enrichment of thiocyanate ions close to BCETB compared to the other studied counterions.

Fluorescent 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide Tröger's bases (TBNaps) possessing (orthogonal) 'α-amino acids', esters and di-peptides and their solvent dependent photophysical properties

The synthesis of fifteen luminescent bis-naphthalimide based Tröger's bases (TBNaps) derived from 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide (4-Amino-Nap) precursors is described; these scaffolds possess α-amino acids, esters or di-peptides conjugated at the imide site and show minor fluorescence in aqueous solution while being highly emissive in organic solvents. The investigation shows that these TBNaps possessing ICT excited state properties are capable of generating either positive or negative solvatochromic effects in response to changes in polarity and/or the hydrogen bonding capabilities of the medium.

Chiral Self-Sorting Effects in the Self-Assembly of Metallosupramolecular Aggregates Comprising Ligands Derived from Tröger's Base

Five ligands with either nitrile or isonitrile metal binding motifs have been synthesized based on the 2,8- or 3,9-disubstituted Tröger's base scaffold, respectively. These ligands self-assemble into dinuclear cyclic metallosupramolecular aggregates upon coordination to [(dppp)Pd(OTf)₂ ] in a highly diastereoselective manner, by heterochiral self-sorting in a chiral self-discriminating manner as shown by ESI mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and single crystal XRD analysis. This observation is in contrast to earlier studies with ligands derived from Tröger's base that have larger metal binding motifs and bis(nitrile) and bis(isonitrile) ligands based on other rigid dissymmetric cores such as [2.2]paracyclophanes. Thus, the combination of these slim metal binding motifs with the rigid v-shaped 2,8- or 3,9-disubstituted Tröger's base scaffolds seems to be especially well preorganized to ensure high-fidelity social self-sorting behavior.

Influencing the Self-Sorting Behavior of [2.2]Paracyclophane-Based Ligands by Introducing Isostructural Binding Motifs

Two isostructural ligands with either nitrile (L^nit) or isonitrile (L^iso) moieties directly connected to a [2.2]paracyclophane backbone with pseudo‐meta substitution pattern have been synthesized. The ligand itself (L^nit) or its precursors (L^iso) were resolved by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase and the absolute configuration of the isolated enantiomers was assigned by XRD analysis and/or by comparison of quantum‐chemical simulated and experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Surprisingly, the resulting metallosupramolecular aggregates formed in solution upon coordination of [(dppp)Pd(OTf)₂] differ in their composition: whereas L^nit forms dinuclear complexes, L^iso exclusively forms trinuclear ones. Furthermore, they also differ in their chiral self‐sorting behavior as (rac)‐L^iso undergoes exclusive social self‐sorting leading to a heterochiral assembly, whereas (rac)‐L^iso shows a twofold preference for the formation of homochiral complexes in a narcissistic self‐sorting manner as proven by ESI mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. Interestingly, upon crystallization, these discrete aggregates undergo structural transformation to coordination polymers, as evidenced by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction.

Efficient resolution of racemic crown-shaped cyclotriveratrylene derivatives and isolation and characterization of the intermediate saddle isomer

The preparative resolution of a trifunctionalized C₃-symmetrical chiral cyclotriveratrylene derivative was achieved via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a chiral stationary phase. This approach is a promising alternative to the previously reported resolution through formation of diastereomeric esters because it involves fewer synthetic steps and is less prone to thermal (re)racemization. During these studies an intermediate saddle conformer could also be isolated and characterized by ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. The HPLC separation method was further developed in order to allow investigations on the racemization behavior of the cyclotriveratrylene derivative.

Chiral self-sorting behaviour of [2.2]paracyclophane-based bis(pyridine) ligands

[2.2]Paracyclophane-based bis(pyridine) ligands form dinuclear complexes upon coordination to palladium(ii) ions, however, with distinct differences concerning their chiral self-sorting ability.

Chiral metallosupramolecular architectures

Over the past few decades, supramolecular chirality in discrete metallosupramolecular architectures has received considerable attention. In this review, a comprehensive summary of discrete, chiral coordination-driven structures, including helices, metallacycles, metallocages, etc., is presented. Although chirality can be introduced prior to, during or even after the coordination self-assembly process, this review puts major emphasis on the more recent development of metallosupramolecular architectures from chiral components, where chirality arises from the enantiopure or racemic scaffolds (bridging or auxiliary ligand). Special attention will be paid to homochiral metallo-assemblies using achiral components where chirality is obtained as a consequence of the twisting of the ligands. Additionally, the potential applications of homochiral metallosupramolecular architectures are also discussed. We hope that this review will be of interest to researchers attempting to design new elaborate homochiral metallosupramolecular architectures with even greater complexity and potential for functions such as chiral recognition, enantiomer separation, asymmetric catalysis, nonlinear sensors, and devices.

Diastereoselective Self-Assembly of a Neutral Dinuclear Double-Stranded Zinc(II) Helicate via Narcissistic Self-Sorting

A new bis(salicylimine) ligand based on the Tröger's base scaffold was synthesized in racemic and enantiomerically pure form. Upon coordination to zinc(II) ions this ligand undergoes highly diastereoselective self-assembly into neutral dinuclear double-stranded helicates as proven by XRD analysis and via comparison of experimental ECD spectra with those simulated with quantum-chemical methods. When the racemic ligand was used, self-assembly occurs under narcissistic self-sorting resulting in the formation of a racemic pair of helicates as revealed by NMR spectroscopy and XRD analysis.

Metal loading of lanthanidopolymers driven by positive cooperativity

The contraction of the lanthanidopolymers [L3^N(Ln(hfac)₃)_m] (Ln is La, Eu or Y) observed upon metal loading with small lanthanides favours solvation in solution, a trend which induces positive cooperativity in the thermodynamic complexation process.

Selective uptake of rare earths from aqueous solutions by EDTA-functionalized magnetic and nonmagnetic nanoparticles

Magnetic (Fe3O4) and nonmagnetic (SiO2 and TiO2) nanoparticles were decorated on their surface with N-[(3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine triacetic acid (TMS-EDTA). The aim was to investigate the influence of the substrate on the behavior of these immobilized metal coordinating groups. The nanoparticles functionalized with TMS-EDTA were used for the adsorption and separation of trivalent rare-earth ions from aqueous solutions. The general adsorption capacity of the nanoparticles was very high (100 to 400 mg/g) due to their large surface area. The heavy rare-earth ions are known to have a higher affinity for the coordinating groups than the light rare-earth ions but an additional difference in selectivity was observed between the different nanoparticles. The separation of pairs of rare-earth ions was found to be dependent on the substrate, namely the density of EDTA groups on the surface. The observation that sterical hindrance (or crowding) of immobilized ligands influences the selectivity could provide a new tool for the fine-tuning of the coordination ability of traditional chelating ligands.

The intrinsic view of ionization equilibria of polyprotic molecules

The described intrinsic approach massively reduces the parameter number to describe microequilibria. The resulting intrinsic parameters yield insight into the protonation of polyprotic molecules.

Optimizing sensitization processes in dinuclear luminescent lanthanide oligomers: selection of rigid aromatic spacers

This work illustrates a simple approach for optimizing the lanthanide luminescence in molecular dinuclear lanthanide complexes and identifies a particular multidentate europium complex as the best candidate for further incorporation into polymeric materials. The central phenyl ring in the bis-tridentate model ligands L3–L5, which are substituted with neutral (X = H, L3), electron-withdrawing (X = F, L4), or electron-donating (X = OCH3, L5) groups, separates the 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine binding units of linear oligomeric multi-tridentate ligand strands that are designed for the complexation of luminescent trivalent lanthanides, Ln(III). Reactions of L3–L5 with [Ln(hfac)3(diglyme)] (hfac– is the hexafluoroacetylacetonate anion) produce saturated single-stranded dumbbell-shaped complexes [Ln2(Lk)(hfac)6] (k = 3–5), in which the lanthanide ions of the two nine-coordinate neutral [N3Ln(hfac)3] units are separated by 12–14 Å. The thermodynamic affinities of [Ln(hfac)3] for the tridentate binding sites in L3–L5 are average (6.6 ≤ log(β(2,1)(Y,Lk)) ≤ 8.4) but still result in 15–30% dissociation at millimolar concentrations in acetonitrile. In addition to the empirical solubility trend found in organic solvents (L4 > L3 >> L5), which suggests that the 1,4-difluorophenyl spacer in L4 is preferable, we have developed a novel tool for deciphering the photophysical sensitization processes operating in [Eu2(Lk)(hfac)6]. A simple interpretation of the complete set of rate constants characterizing the energy migration mechanisms provides straightforward objective criteria for the selection of [Eu2(L4)(hfac)6] as the most promising building block.
