Abstract
Calix[n]arenes offer ideal chemical functionality through the polyphenolic lower rim to construct nano-sized coordination clusters with lanthanide (Ln) metal ions (e.g., NdIII10, GdIII8). However, the number of metal centers they can accommodate is still limited compared to that achievable with smaller ligands (e.g., GdIII140, GdIII104). Here, we exploit a combination of the "anion template strategy" and "templating ligands" to synthesise three highly symmetric (D3h, trigonal planar) LnIII18 (Ln = La, Nd, and Gd) systems, representing the largest calix[n]arene-based coordination clusters yet. The LnIII18 fragment is templated by a chloride anion located at the center of the cluster, wherefrom twelve μ3-OH- ligands bind 'internally' to the eighteen LnIII ions. 'Externally' the metallic skeleton is connected by p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene, oxo, chloro and carbonate ligands. The crystal packing in the lattice reveals large cylindrical channels of ∼26 Å in diameter, whose pore volume corresponds to ∼50% of the unit cell volume (using a 1.2 Å spherical probe radius). Magnetic measurements reveal the predominance of weak antiferromagnetic exchange in the Gd analog. Heat capacity data of GdIII18 reveal a high magnetic entropy with -ΔSm = 23.7 J K-1 kg-1, indicating potential for engineering magnetic refrigerant materials with calix[8]arenes.

Abstract
Four new isostructural rare earth metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) were synthesized and full characterized, namely, {[(CH)2NH2]3[RE2(BTDBA)2(HCOO)]·5H2O·2DMF}n (H4BTDBA = (4',4'''-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)bis([1,1'-biphenyl]-3,5-dicarboxylic acid); RE = Eu (JXUST-34), Gd (JXUST-35), Tb (JXUST-36), and Dy (JXUST-37)). The single-crystal structures analysis shows that JXUST-34-37 are chain-based three-dimensional structures. Importantly, JXUST-34 exhibits excellent water, organic solvents, and acid-base stability, which can be used as a fluorescence sensor for folic acid and Al3+ with detection limits of 0.02 mM and 0.05 μM, respectively. The presence of free [(CH)2NH2]+ cations in the channels can engage the proton carrier during proton conduction. JXUST-34-37 display good proton conductivity, and the conductivities vary with relative humidity and temperatures, among which JXUST-37 has the highest conductivity of 9.66 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 60 °C and 98% RH. The magnetic studies show that the -ΔSm of JXUST-35 reaches 16.13 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K and ΔH = 7 T. JXUST-34-37 show multifunctional properties of fluorescence sensing, high proton conductivity, and magnetic refrigeration, which provides a new clue for the development of fluorescent-responsive, magnetic-refrigerant, and proton-conductive RE-MOF materials.

Abstract
High-valence Ti(IV)-based metallocalixarene coordination cages that are linked by oriented ancillary ligands are unknown so far. Herein, the first family of tunable calixarene-based coordination cages of Ti(IV) with a framework formula [Ti12(OiPr)12(TBC[4])6L6] have been assembled from six {Ti2(OiPr)2(TBC[4])}2+ nodes and six pyridinedicarboxylic ligands. Furthermore, the {Ti12L6} cage showed strong photocatalytic H2 evolution activity, and DFT studies were performed to explore its electronic structure.

Abstract
Polyhedral metallocalixarene nanocage clusters based on pure Ti(IV) ions are to our knowledge unknown hitherto. Herein we report the first Ti(IV)-based metallocalixarene nanocage cluster by assembling a [Ti13O14] cage with six t-butylcalix[4]arene molecules. Notably, the cluster exhibits extraordinary stability in high-concentration acid/alkali solutions and can act as a stable photocatalyst to catalyze the oxidation of ammonia to imines.

One-Dimensional Gadolinium (III) Complexes Based on Alpha- and Beta-Amino Acids Exhibiting Field-Induced Slow Relaxation of Magnetization. INORGANICS 2022. Abstract
Gadolinium (III) complexes exhibiting slow relaxation of magnetization are uncommon and have been much less studied than other compounds based on anisotropic lanthanide (III) ions. We prepared two one-dimensional gadolinium (III) complexes based on α-glycine (gly) and β-alanine (β-ala) amino acids, with the formula {[Gd2(gly)6(H2O)4](ClO4)6·5H2O}n (1) and {[Gd2(β-ala)6(H2O)4](ClO4)6·H2O}n (2), which were magneto-structurally characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the triclinic system (space group Pī). In complex 1, two Gd (III) ions are eight-coordinate and bound to six oxygen atoms from six gly ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules, the metal ions showing different geometries (bicapped trigonal prism and square antiprism). In complex 2, two Gd (III) ions are nine-coordinate and bound to seven oxygen atoms from six β-ala ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules in the same geometry (capped square antiprism). Variable-temperature dc magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on microcrystalline samples of 1 and 2 show similar magnetic behavior for both compounds, with antiferromagnetic coupling between the Gd (III) ions connected through carboxylate groups. Ac magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal slow relaxation of magnetization in the presence of an external dc field in both compounds, hence indicating the occurrence of the field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) phenomenon in both 1 and 2.

Abstract
Reaction of 2,2'-bis-p-tBu-calix[4]arene (H8L) with MnCl2·4H2O, GdCl3·6H2O and 2,6-pyridinedimethanol (H2pdm) affords [MnIIIMnIIGdIII(H3L)(pdmH)(pdm)(MeOH)2(dmf)]·3MeCN·dmf (3·3MeCN·dmf) upon vapour diffusion of MeCN into the basic dmf/MeOH mother liquor. 3 crystallises in the tetragonal space group P41212 with the asymmetric unit comprising the entire cluster. The highly unusual core contains a triangular arrangement of MnIIIMnIIGdIII ions housed within a [MnIIIMnIIGdIII(OR)4]4- partial cubane. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation data reveal best fit parameters JMn(II)-Mn(III) = +0.415 cm-1, JMn(III)-Gd(III) = +0.221 cm-1, JMn(II)-Gd(III) = -0.258 cm-1 and DMn(III) = -4.139 cm-1. Theoretically derived magnetic exchange interactions, anisotropy parameters, and magneto-structural correlations for 3 are in excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract
p-tBu-calix[4]arene (H4TBC[4]) has proven to be an incredibly versatile ligand for the synthesis of 3d- and 3d/4f- clusters, in particular those containing mixed-valent Mn ions. These are of interest to the magnetochemist for the diversity of magnetic behaviours that can be shown, along with a huge variety of nuclearities and topologies accessible, which allow one to outline magneto-structural correlations and a quantitative understanding of their properties. This contribution reports the synthesis, analysis and magnetic properties of a Brucite-like Mn-oxo/hydroxo octanuclear fragment encapsulated within/capped by four [MnIII-TBC[4]]− moieties. A diol coligand in the reaction mixture plays a seemingly important role in determining the outcome, though it is not incorporated in the final structure.

Abstract
Four new [2 × 2] square grid LnIII4 clusters were successfully synthesized by employing a multidentate chelating Schiff base ligand. Magnetic studies showed that cluster 1 displays a larger magnetocaloric effect (−ΔSm = 34.46 J kg−1 K−1 for ΔH = 7.0 T at 2.0 K), while 3 exhibits slow relaxation behavior under a zero dc field, with ΔE/kB of 42.76 K and τ0 of 1.02 × 10−6 s.

Abstract
Ferrocene-based Lewis bases have found utility as metalloligands in a wide variety of applications. The coordination chemistry of cyanoferrocenes however, is underexplored. Herein, we describe a new synthetic protocol for the generation of cyanoferrocenes. The coordination chemistry of these metalloligands to [Cu(NCMe)4][PF6], [(PPh3)2Cu(NCMe)2][PF6] and [(dppf)Cu(NCMe)2][PF6] salts has been explored, providing crystallographic evidence of cluster and polymeric forms of 1,1'- and 1,2-dicyanoferrocene complexes. The stability of the complexes and ligand dissociation were found to be strongly solvent-dependent.

Abstract
The aim of this perspective is to summarise the use of the reported 3d-4f Coordination Clusters (CCs) in catalytic reactions and to demonstrate the potential of this emerging field. The pioneering work of Shibasaki, Matsunaga and others, demonstrated the use of 3d-4f in situ systems to catalyse asymmetric organic transformations. Our recent studies show that well characterised 3d-4f CCs catalyse numerous organic transformations and useful mechanistic aspects of their catalysis can be obtained. Furthermore, we have shown that by manipulation of the metal ion coordination environment; the nature of the 3d and lanthanide ions and the organic periphery of the ligand can all improve the efficacy of a 3d-4f CC catalyst. All in situ formed and well characterized 3d-4f CCs involved in catalysis are discussed.

Abstract
Magnetic cooling at low temperature has attracted intensive interest in cryogenics research, which may become important as cooling medium for long-wave photon detectors to support space exploration. Here, we report a Gd-based quaternary magnetic refrigerant material, Gd5 BSi2 O13 , containing chains of face-shared GdO9 polyhedra and geometrically frustrated OGd3 triangles. Magnetic measurements indicate that Gd5 BSi2 O13 exhibits a large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) about 1.74 times that of the practical magnetic refrigerant GGG (-ΔSm =67.0 J kg-1 K-1 ). We analyzed the origin of the large MCE by comparing GdIII -containing compounds with different structures and concentrations of GdIII .

Abstract
Magnetic cooling is a highly efficient refrigeration technique with the potential of replacing expensive and rare helium-3 in the field of ultra-low temperature cooling. However, the visualization of a cryogen at an extremely low temperature and in a strong magnetic field is challenging, but it is crucial for the precise positioning and in situ thermal probe measurements in potential practical applications. Here, the activation of a red-emissive Mn(ii) ion using 3d/4f chemistry produces a luminescent molecule cooler, [Gd5Mn2(LOMe)2(OH)4(Ac)6(MeOH)10Cl2]Cl3·2MeOH (1), with the core of an Mn(ii)-anchored heptanuclear [GdIII5MnII2] pyramid. The photoluminescence (PL) of the Mn2+ emission, with a large Stokes shift (λem ∼ 690 nm) from 4T1(4G) → 6A1(6S), shows not only a sensitive temperature sensing property but also reversible mechanoluminescence (ML). More attractively, these findings reveal a considerable magnetocaloric effect (MCE) coupled with a tunable emission window, opening up new opportunities in the multifunctional applications of PL, ML, and the MCE involving red-light sources, thermometers, and stress imaging. In particular, this provides a novel resolution to design visualized PL coolers.
