Abstract
Hydroformylation of olefins is widely used in the chemical industry due to its versatility and the ability to produce valuable aldehydes with 100% atom economy. Herein, a hybrid phosphate promoter was found to efficiently promote rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of styrenes under remarkably mild conditions with high regioselectivities. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the weak coordination between the Rhodium and the P=O double bond of this pentavalent phosphate likely induced exceptional reactivity and high ratios of branched aldehydes to linear products.

Abstract
The site-selective C-H oxygenation of alkyl chains as well as deactivated positions remains a great challenge for chemists. Here, we report the synthesis and application of four new supramolecular tweezer-based oxidation catalysts. They consist of the well-explored M(pdp/mcp) oxidation moiety and a molecular tweezer capable of binding ammonium salts. All catalysts display preferential oxidation of the strongly deactivated C3/C4 positions, however to different degrees. Furthermore, the best performing catalyst Fe(pdp)Twe was explored with an expanded substrate scope. It was demonstrated that the deactivated positions C3/C4 are also preferentially oxidized in these cases.

Abstract
Transition metal catalysis is of utmost importance for the development of sustainable processes in academia and industry. The activity and selectivity of metal complexes are typically the result of the interplay between ligand and metal properties. As the ligand can be chemically altered, a large research focus has been on ligand development. More recently, it has been recognized that further control over activity and selectivity can be achieved by using the "second coordination sphere", which can be seen as the region beyond the direct coordination sphere of the metal center. Hydrogen bonds appear to be very useful interactions in this context as they typically have sufficient strength and directionality to exert control of the second coordination sphere, yet hydrogen bonds are typically very dynamic, allowing fast turnover. In this review we have highlighted several key features of hydrogen bonding interactions and have summarized the use of hydrogen bonding to program the second coordination sphere. Such control can be achieved by bridging two ligands that are coordinated to a metal center to effectively lead to supramolecular bidentate ligands. In addition, hydrogen bonding can be used to preorganize a substrate that is coordinated to the metal center. Both strategies lead to catalysts with superior properties in a variety of metal catalyzed transformations, including (asymmetric) hydrogenation, hydroformylation, C-H activation, oxidation, radical-type transformations, and photochemical reactions.

Abstract
An experimentally confirmed porous vinyl-functionalized PPh3 (3V-PPh3) polymer-supported Rh-based catalyst exhibits the significant advantages of high activity, high stability, and easy separation in the synthesis of propionaldehyde, which fundamentally solves the problem of Rh precious-metal loss. In this paper, the microscopic mechanism and electronic structure characteristics of two kinds of cross-linked 3V-PPh3 polymer-supported Rh-based catalyst were studied by means of quantum chemistry (QC). With 3V-PPh3 as the carrier, stable adsorption configurations of Rh and 3V-PPh3 were investigated, and the results showed that Rh and P had the strongest effects, while the vinyl group enhanced the adsorption strength of Rh. Moreover, it was found that a high concentration of exposed P was beneficial to the dispersion of Rh. With 3V-PPh3 as the ligand, the properties of the HRh(CO)(P-frame)3 complex were investigated, and the results of structure analysis indicated that there were strong interactions between Rh and P, which contributed more to the non-loss of Rh. Among the four different configurations, the Rh-P coplanar configuration of cross-linking mode 2 had the highest Rh-P bond energy. The results of AIM analysis suggested that the Rh-P and Rh-C(CO) bonds involve closed-shell (donor-acceptor) interactions. The Mulliken charge and molecular electrostatic potential results revealed that the Rh activity of the Rh and P non-coplanar configuration was higher in the two cross-linking methods. Hopefully, this work will clarify the structure-activity relationship between 3V-PPh3 polymer and Rh, and provide theoretical guidance for the design and development of high-efficiency heterogeneous catalysts for the hydroformylation of ethylene to propionaldehyde.

Abstract
Biocatalysis is an important area of modern research and is extensively explored by various industries to attain greener methods in various applications. Supramolecular interactions of short peptides have been under the scanner for developing artificial smart materials inspired from natural systems. Peptide-based artificial enzymes have been proved to show various enzyme-like activities. Therefore, immobilization of catalytic peptides on solid surfaces can be an extremely useful breakthrough for development of cost-effective catalytic formulations. In this work, a series of peptide amphiphiles (PAs) have been systematically analyzed to find the most effective catalyst with esterase like activity. The PA, containing a catalytic triad, 'Asp(Ser)His' in a branched manner, was further immobilized onto silica nanoparticles through covalent bonding method to obtain surface coated catalytic silica nanoparticles. The heterogenous catalytic formulation not only showed enhanced esterase activity than the self-assembled PA in homogenous phase, but also exceeded the activity of natural CV lipase. The catalytic formulation showed high stereoselectivity towards chiral esters. Moreover, the catalyst remained stable at higher temperature, in presence of various denaturant and retained its activity after several catalytic cycles. The ease of separation, robust nature, reusability and high stereoselectivity of the catalyst opens up the possibility of creating new generation heterogeneous catalysts for further industrial applications.

Abstract
Precise delivery of a proton plays a key role in O2 activation at iron oxygenases, enabling the crucial O−O cleavage step that generates the oxidizing high‐valent metal–oxo species. Such a proton is delivered by acidic residues that may either directly bind the iron center or lie in its second coordination sphere. Herein, a supramolecular strategy for enzyme‐like H2O2 activation at a biologically inspired manganese catalyst, with a nearly stoichiometric amount (1–1.5 equiv) of a carboxylic acid is disclosed. Key for this strategy is the incorporation of an α,ω‐amino acid in the second coordination sphere of a chiral catalyst via remote ammonium‐crown ether recognition. The properly positioned carboxylic acid function enables effective activation of hydrogen peroxide, leading to catalytic asymmetric epoxidation. Modulation of both amino acid and catalyst structure can tune the efficiency and the enantioselectivity of the reaction, and a study on the oxidative degradation pathway of the system is presented.

Abstract
Hydrogen bonding plays significant roles in various biological processes during substrate orientation and binding and therefore assists in assorted organic transformations. However, replicating the intricate selection of hydrogen bonds, as observed in nature, in synthetic complexes has met with only limited success. Despite this fact, recent times have seen the emergence of several notable examples where hydrogen bonds have been introduced in synthetic complexes. A few such examples have also illustrated the substantial role played by the hydrogen bonds in influencing and often controlling the catalytic outcome. This perspective presents selected examples illustrating the significance of hydrogen bonds offered by the coordination and the organometallic complexes that aid in providing the desired orientation to a substrate adjacent to a catalytic metal center and remarkably assisting in the catalysis.

Abstract
The adoption of a supramolecular approach in catalysis promises to address a number of unmet challenges, ranging from activity (unlocking of novel reaction pathways) to selectivity (alteration of the innate selectivity of a reaction, e.g. selective functionalization of C-H bonds) and regulation (switch ON/OFF, sequential catalysis, etc.). Supramolecular tools such as reversible association and recognition, pre-organization of reactants and stabilization of transition states upon binding offer a unique chance to achieve the above goals disclosing new horizons whose potential is being increasingly recognized and used, sometimes reaching the degree of ripeness for practical use. This review summarizes the main developments that have opened such new frontiers, with the aim of providing a guide to researchers approaching the field. We focus on artificial supramolecular catalysts of defined stoichiometry which, under homogeneous conditions, unlock outcomes that are highly difficult if not impossible to attain otherwise, namely unnatural reactivity or selectivity and catalysis regulation. The different strategies recently explored in supramolecular catalysis are concisely presented, and, for each one, a single or very few examples is/are described (mainly last 10 years, with only milestone older works discussed). The subject is divided into four sections in light of the key design principle: (i) nanoconfinement of reactants, (ii) recognition-driven catalysis, (iii) catalysis regulation by molecular machines and (iv) processive catalysis.

Abstract
Herein, a robust Pd(II)-based polyfunctional magnetic amphiphilic artificial metalloenzyme was prepared by anchoring a Pd(2,2'-dipyridylamine)Cl2 bearing hydrophilic monomethyl ether poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) chains on the surface of amino-functionalized silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles. The 2,2'-dipyridylamine (dpa) has shown excellent complexation properties for Pd(II) and it could be easily anchored onto functionalized magnetic support by the bridging nitrogen atom. Moreover, the bridging nitrogen atom at the proximity of Pd(II) catalytic center could play an important role in dynamic suppramolecular interactions with substrates. The leaching, air and moisture resistant [Pd(dpa)Cl2] complex endow the dynamic and robust structure to the designed artificial enzyme. Moreover, the water dispersibility of designed artificial metalloenzyme raised from mPEG chains and the magnetic nanoparticles core which could function as protein mimics endow it other necessary characters of artificial enzymes. The prepared artificial metalloenzyme displayed remarkable activity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction employing low-palladium loading under mild conditions, with the exceptionally high turnover frequency, clean reaction profile, easy work-up procedure, good to excellent products yields and short reaction times. The designed air- and moisture-stable artificial metalloenzyme could recycle more than fifteen times with easy separation procedure in aqueous solution under aerobic conditions without any noticeable loss in activity.

Abstract
The stereoselectivity of a Diels-Alder reaction within the periphery of hierarchically assembled titanium(IV) helicates formed from mixtures of achiral, reactive and chiral, unreactive ligands was investigated in detail. Following the pathway of the chiral induction, the chiral ligands, solvents as well as substituents at the dienophile were carefully varied. Based on the results of the stoichiometric reaction, a secondary amine-catalyzed nitro-Michael reaction is performed as well which afforded reasonable diastereoselectivities.

Abstract
In this work, we developed a new structural porous organic polymer containing biphosphoramidite unit, which can be used as a solid bidentate phosphorous ligand for rhodium-catalyzed solvent-free higher olefins hydroformylation. The resultant catalyst demonstrated unprecedently high regioselectivity to linear aldehydes and could be readily recovered for successive reuses with good stability in both catalytic activity and regioselectivity. A porous organic polymer as a ligand was designed and prepared for Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation with outstanding activity and unprecedently high regioselectivity to linear aldehyde.![]()

A domino reaction for generating β-aryl aldehydes from alkynes by substrate recognition catalysis. Nat Commun 2019; 10:4868. Abstract
The development of universal catalyst systems that enable efficient, selective, and straightforward chemical transformations is of immense scientific importance. Here we develop a domino process comprising three consecutive reaction steps based on the strategy of supramolecular substrate recognition. This approach provides valuable β-aryl aldehydes from readily accessible α-alkynoic acids and arenes under mild reaction conditions, employing a supramolecular Rh catalyst containing an acylguanidine-bearing phosphine ligand. Furthermore, the synthesis of a key intermediate of Avitriptan using this protocol is accomplished. The first step of the reaction sequence is proved to be the regioselective hydroformylation of α-alkynoic acids. Remarkably, molecular recognition of the ligand and the substrate via hydrogen bonding plays a key role in this step. Control experiments indicate that the reaction further proceeds via 1,4-addition of an arene nucleophile to the unsaturated aldehyde intermediate and subsequent decarboxylation.

Abstract
Herein, we report a supramolecular rhodium complex that can form dimeric or monomeric Rh-species catalytically active in hydroformylation, depending on the binding of effectors within the integrated DIM-receptor. X-ray crystal structures, in situ (high-pressure (HP)) spectroscopy studies, and molecular modelling studies show that in the absence of effectors, the preferred Rh-species formed is the dimer, of which two ligands coordinate to two rhodium metals. Importantly, upon binding guest molecules, -effectors-, to the DIM-receptor under hydroformylation conditions, the monomeric Rh-active species is formed, as evidenced by a combination of in situ HP NMR and IR spectroscopy studies and molecular modelling. As the monomeric complex has different catalytic properties from the dimeric complex, we effectively generate a catalytic system of which the properties respond to the presence of effectors, reminiscent of how the properties of proteins are regulated in nature. Indeed, catalytic and kinetic experiments show that both the selectivity and activity of this supramolecular catalytic system can be influenced in the hydroformylation of 1-octene using acetate as an effector that shift the equilibrium from the dimeric to monomeric species.

Abstract
Supramolecular approaches in transition-metal catalysis, including catalyst encapsulation, have attracted considerable attention. Compared to enzymes, supramolecular catalysts in general are less complex. Enzyme activity is often controlled by the use of smaller cofactor molecules, which is important in order to control reactivity in complex mixtures of molecules. Interested in increasing complexity and allowing control over supramolecular catalyst formation in response to external stimuli, we designed a catalytic system that only forms an efficient supramolecular complex when a small cofactor molecule is added to the solution. This in turn affects both the activity and selectivity when applied in a hydroformylation reaction. This contribution shows that catalyst encapsulation can be controlled by the addition of a cofactor, which affects crucial catalyst properties.

Abstract
The hydroformylation reaction is one of the most intensively explored reactions in the field of homogeneous transition metal catalysis, and many industrial applications are known. However, this atom economical reaction has not been used to its full potential, as many selectivity issues have not been solved. Traditionally, the selectivity is controlled by the ligand that is coordinated to the active metal center. Recently, supramolecular strategies have been demonstrated to provide powerful complementary tools to control activity and selectivity in hydroformylation reactions. In this review, we will highlight these supramolecular strategies. We have organized this paper in sections in which we describe the use of supramolecular bidentate ligands, substrate preorganization by interactions between the substrate and functional groups of the ligands, and hydroformylation catalysis in molecular cages.

Abstract
Rational design of catalysts for asymmetric transformations is a longstanding challenge in the field of catalysis. In the current contribution we report a catalyst in which a hydrogen bond between the substrate and the catalyst plays a crucial role in determining the selectivity and the rate of the catalytic hydrogenation reaction, as is evident from a combination of experiments and DFT calculations. Detailed insight allowed in silico mutation of the catalyst such that only this hydrogen bond interaction is stronger, predicting that the new catalyst is faster. Indeed, we experimentally confirmed that optimization of the catalyst can be realized by increasing the hydrogen bond strength of this interaction by going from a urea to phosphine oxide H-bond acceptor on the ligand.

Abstract
A strategy for affecting ortho versus meta/para selectivity in Ir-catalyzed C-H borylations (CHBs) of phenols is described. From selectivity observations with ArylOBpin (pin = pinacolate), it is hypothesized that an electrostatic interaction between the partial negatively charged OBpin group and the partial positively charged bipyridine ligand of the catalyst favors ortho selectivity. Experimental and computational studies designed to test this hypothesis support it. From further computational work a second generation, in silico designed catalyst emerged, where replacing Bpin with Beg (eg = ethylene glycolate) was predicted to significantly improve ortho selectivity. Experimentally, reactions employing B2eg2 gave ortho selectivities > 99%. Adding triethylamine significantly improved conversions. This ligand-substrate electrostatic interaction provides a unique control element for selective C-H functionalization.

Abstract
The desymmetrizing hydroformylation of internal alkenes derived from dihydromuconic acid is described. The study of this reaction afforded easy access to polyfunction aldehydes. After the evaluation of the reactivity of the dimethyl ester derivative with various primary amines, this methodology was used to design a rapid synthesis of (±)-vindeburnol from tryptamine in only two steps.
