Abstract
This article demonstrated the redox-noninnocent phenylene-linked bis(β-diketiminate) (L2-)-bridged first example of isomeric diruthenium(III)-acac species (acac = acetylacetonate) and its ability to activate dioxygen. The coordination of deprotonated L2- to the {Ru(acac)2} in bis(bidentate) mode led to isomeric {(acac)2RuIII}2(μ-L2-) (S = 1, 1-trans/1-cis, green). 1 displayed Ru(III)-based anisotropic EPR in CH3CN but without the resolution of the forbidden (ΔMs = 2) g1/2 signal at 77 K. 1-cis, however, slowly transformed to the energetically favored 1-trans form. 1 underwent two-step oxygenation at the Cβ sites of L2- to form the β-diketiminate/α-ketodiimine (L'-)-bridged mixed valent (acac)2RuIII(μ-L'-)RuII(acac)2 (2, S = 1/2, pink) followed by bis(α-ketodiimine) (L″)-bridged isovalent (acac)2RuII(μ-L″)RuII(acac)2 (3, S = 0, red). The role of O2 toward 1 → 2/3 was corroborated by 18O2 labeling experiment. Redox steps of 1-3 varied as a function of isomeric identity, bridge, and metal oxidation state. The calculated MOs and Mulliken spin densities attributed to the noninnocence of L2-, L'-, and L″ in the respective complexes. Spectrophotometric monitoring of 1 → 2 revealed pseudo-first-order rate constants (105k s-1) of 1.8 (303 K), 3.5 (313 K), 7.7 (323 K), and 17.0 (333 K) and ΔH⧧/ΔS⧧/ΔG⧧ of 14.3 kcal mol-1/-33.1 cal mol-1 K-1/24.2 kcal mol-1 (298 K), respectively. Moreover, characterization of the short-lived blue intermediate obtained during the conversion of 1 → 2/3 upon exposure to O2 supported its valence tautomeric form (VT1, RuIII-L2--RuIII ↔ RuIII-L•--RuII, S = 1), which in effect facilitated oxygen activation at the ligand backbone.

Abstract
Two Ni complexes are reported with κ4-P2N2 β-diimino (BDI) ligands with the general formula [Ni(XBDI)](BF4)2, where BDI is N-(2-(diphenylphosphaneyl)ethyl)-4-((2-(diphenylphosphaneyl)ethyl)imino)pent-2-en-2-amine and X indicates the substituent in the α-carbon intradiimine position, X = H for 1(BF4)2 and X = Ph for 2(BF4)2. Electrochemical analysis together with UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy in acetonitrile and dimethylformamide (DMF) indicates the conversion of the β-diimino complexes 12+ and 22+ to the negatively charged β-diketiminato (BDK) analogues (1-H)+ and (2-H)+ via deprotonation in DMF. Moreover, further electrochemical and spectroscopy evidence indicates that the one-electron-reduced derivatives 1+ and 2+ can also rapidly evolve to the BDK (1-H)+ and (2-H)+, respectively, via hydrogen gas evolution through a bimolecular homolytic pathway. Finally, both complexes are demonstrated to be active for the proton reduction reaction in DMF at Eapp = -1.8 V vs Fc+/0, being the active species the one-electron-reduced derivative 1-H and 2-H.

Abstract
A new template condensation reaction has been discovered in a mixture of Pt(II), thiobenzamide, and base. Four complexes of the general form [Pt(ctaPhR)2], R = CH3 (1a), H (1b), F (1c), Cl (1d), cta = condensed thioamide, have been prepared under similar conditions and thoroughly characterized by 1H NMR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, (spectro)electrochemistry, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The ligand is redox active and can be reduced from the initial monoanion to a dianionic and then trianionic state. Chemical reduction of 1a with [Cp2Co] yielded [Cp2Co]2[Pt(ctaPhCH3)2], [Cp2Co]2[1a], which has been similarly characterized with the addition of EPR spectroscopy and SQUID magnetization. The singly reduced form containing [1a]1-, (nBu4N)[Pt(ctaPhCH3)2], has been generated in situ and characterized by UV-vis and EPR spectroscopies. DFT studies of 1b, [1b]1-, and [1b]2- confirm the location of additional electrons in exclusively ligand-based orbitals. A detailed analysis of this redox-active ligand, with emphasis on the characteristics that favor noninnocent behavior in six-membered chelate rings, is included.

Abstract
Metal-coordination-driven C-C bond functionalization without involvement of the traditional route of oxidative addition, insertion, and reductive elimination has gained immense importance. In this context, the present Communication highlights the facile ring contraction process of the deprotonated bis-lawsone (L2-) to functionalized L12- upon coordination to {Os(bpy)2} or isomeric {Os(pap)2} (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and pap = 2-phenylazopyridine) in 1-3. Further, recognition of fractional redox noninnocence of L1 in 1+-3+ via experimental and theoretical events facilitated its inclusion in the redox noninnocent family.

Abstract
We report on a systematical reactivity study of β-diketiminate zinc complexes with redox-active 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy). The reaction of LZnI (L = HC[C(Me)N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)]2) with NaB(C6F5)4 in the presence of bpy yielded [LZn(bpy)][B(C6F5)4] (1), with bpy serving as a neutral ligand, whereas reduction reactions of LZnI with 1 or 2 equiv of KC8 in the presence of bpy gave the radical complex LZn(bpy) (2) and [2.2.2-Cryptand-K][LZn(bpy)] (3), in which bpy either acts as a π-radical anion or a diamagnetic dianion, respectively. The paramagnetic nature of 2 was confirmed via solution magnetic susceptibility measurements, and UV-vis spectroscopy shows that 2 exhibits absorption bands typical for bpy radical species. The EPR spectra of 2 and its deuterated analog 2-d 8 demonstrate that the spin density is localized to the bpy ligand. Density functional theoretical calculations and natural bond orbital analysis were employed to elucidate the electronic structure of complexes 1-3 and accurately reproduced the structural experimental data. It is shown that reduction of the bpy moiety results in a decrease in the β-diketiminate co-ligand bite angle and elongation of the Zn-N(β-diketiminate) bonds, which act cooperatively and in synergy with the bpy ligand by decreasing Zn-N(bpy) bond lengths to stabilize the energy of the LUMO.

Abstract
The tetradentate N2S2 Schiff base ligands derived from condensing S-methyl or S-benzyl dithiocarbazate with acetylacetone have been found to be versatile chelators for copper and able to stabilise unusually high oxidation states. Herein we report their Ni coordination chemistry and a variety of products ensue depending on the reaction conditions. Unusual examples of linkage isomerism have been observed upon complexation with nickel acetate and these asymmetrically and symmetrically coordinated NiIIN2S2 complexes have been characterised both crystallographically and in solution by NMR. These compounds react rapidly with dioxygen and the ligands are particularly susceptible to oxidation which lead to various products including dinuclear NiII complexes derived from radical homocoupling reactions. These dinuclear NiII complexes are also redox active and spectroelectrochemistry has revealed new electronic transitions from their formally NiIII/NiII mixed valent state.

Abstract
The article deals with the sensitive electronic forms in accessible redox states of structurally and spectroscopically authenticated deprotonated 1,2-bis((1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methylene)hydrazine (H2LR, R = H) or 1,2-bis((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methylene)hydrazine (H2LR, R = Me), a BODIPY analogue bridged diruthenium complex as a function of varying ancillary ligands. It involved rac-(acac)2RuIII(μ-LR 2-)RuIII(acac)21a, R = H; 1b, R = Me (S = 1, acac = acetylacetonate), rac-[(bpy)2RuII(μ-L2-)RuII(bpy)2](ClO4)2 [2](ClO4)2 (S = 0, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and diastereomeric [(pap)2RuII(μ-L2-)RuII(pap)2](ClO4)2meso-[3a](ClO4)2/rac-[3b](ClO4)2 (S = 0, pap = phenylazopyridine). The crystal structure established the linkage of the conjugated -C5[double bond, length as m-dash]N2-N3[double bond, length as m-dash]C6- central unit with the two terminal deprotonated pyrrole units of coordinated L2-. The bridging L2- in 1a, 1b, [2](ClO4)2, [3b](ClO4)2 and [3a](ClO4)2 was slightly twisted and planar with torsional angles of 41.54°, 42.91°, 37.38°, 35.33° and 0°, respectively, with regard to the central N2-N3 bond. The extent of twisting of the bridge followed an inverse relationship with the RuRu separation: 4.935/4.934 Å 1a/1b < 5.141 Å [2](ClO4)2 < 5.201 Å [3b](ClO4)2 < 5.351 Å [3a](ClO4)2. This is also attributed to the intermolecular ππ/CHπ interactions between the nearby aromatic rings of L and bpy or pap in [2](ClO4)2 or [3](ClO4)2, respectively. The multiple redox steps of the complexes varied appreciably based on the σ-donating (acac) and π-acidic (bpy, pap) characteristics of the ancillary ligands. Experimental (structure, EPR) and theoretical (DFT) evaluation pertaining to the electronic forms of 1n, 2n and 3n demonstrated the preferential involvement of L based frontier orbitals in electron transfer processes even in combination with the redox facile ruthenium ion. This in turn highlighted its redox non-innocent feature as in the case of well-documented metal coordinated quinonoid, formazanate, diimine (bpy), azo (pap) and β-diketiminate functions.

Abstract
Homogeneous electrocatalytic proton reduction is reported using cobalt complex [1](BF4)2. This complex comprises two bis(1‐methyl‐4,5‐diphenyl‐1H‐imidazol‐2‐yl)methane (HBMIMPh2
) ligands that contain an acidic methylene moiety in their backbone. Upon reduction of [1](BF4)2 by either electrochemical or chemical means, one of its HBMIMPh2
ligands undergoes deprotonation under the formation of dihydrogen. Addition of a mild proton source (acetic acid) to deprotonated complex [2](BF4) regenerates protonated complex [1](BF4)2. In presence of acetic acid in acetonitrile solvent [1](BF4)2 shows electrocatalytic proton reduction with a kobs of ≈200 s−1 at an overpotential of 590 mV. Mechanistic investigations supported by DFT (BP86) suggest that dihydrogen formation takes place in an intramolecular fashion through the participation of a methylene C−H bond of the HBMIMPh2
ligand and a CoII−H bond through formal heterolytic splitting of the latter. These findings are of interest to the development of responsive ligands for molecular (base)metal (electro)catalysis.

Abstract
The quest for simple ligands that enable multi-electron metal-ligand redox chemistry is driven by a desire to replace noble metals in catalysis and to discover novel chemical reactivity. The vast majority of simple ligand systems display electrochemical potentials impractical for catalytic cycles, illustrating the importance of creating new strategies towards energetically aligned ligand frontier and transition metal d orbitals. We herein demonstrate the ability to chemically control the redox-activity of the ubiquitous acetylacetonate (acac) ligand. By employing the ligand field of high-spin Cr(ii) as a switch, we were able to chemically tailor the occurrence of metal-ligand redox events via simple coordination or decoordination of the labile auxiliary ligands. The mechanism of ligand field actuation can be viewed as a destabilization of the d z 2 orbital relative to the π* LUMO of acac, which proffers a generalizable strategy to synthetically engineer redox-activity with seemingly redox-inactive ligands.

Abstract
β-Diketonates, such as acetylacetonate, are amongst the most common bidentate ligands towards elements across the entire periodic table and are considered wholly redox-inactive in their complexes. Herein we show that complexation of 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate (hfac- ) to CrII spontaneously affords CrIII and a reduced β-diketonate radical ligand scaffold, as evidenced by crystallographic analysis, magnetic measurements, optical spectroscopy, reactivity studies, and DFT calculations. The possibility of harnessing β-diketonates as electron reservoirs opens up possibilities for new metal-ligand concerted reactivity in the ubiquitous β-diketonate coordination chemistry.

Abstract
Twenty-three dinuclear aluminum halide complexes based on bis(β-diketiminate) ligands with various flexible and rigid bridging groups have been synthesized and fully characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and elemental analysis. In addition, nine complexes were structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Attempts to reduce the dinuclear species using C8K remained unsuccessful, but the reduction potentials investigated by cyclic voltammetry indicate the principle feasibility.

Abstract
Redox-active unsaturated chelate ligands can be realised with different ring sizes of the resulting metallacycles. An overview is presented, starting from an exposition of non-innocent behaviour and chelate effects. A systematic approach is used to describe the most familiar situation, the metal complexes of 1,4-hetero-1,3-dienes in established forms (e.g. o-quinone, α-dithiolene, and α-diimine ligands) and with less common combinations of O, S, and N heteroatoms. The different steric and electronic conditions in six-membered chelate ring systems derived from the β-diketonate structure will be discussed with examples of substituted and π extended ligands, including 9-oxidophenalenyl, formazanate, and anions derived from indigo or 9,10-anthraquinone. Four-membered chelate rings existing in at least two ligand-based oxidation states are available through steric and electronic stabilisation in amidinate or triazenide complexes. Three-membered and seven-membered chelate ring situations are discussed briefly as further alternatives.

Abstract
Controlled ligand-based redox-activity and chemical non-innocence are rapidly gaining importance for selective (catalytic) processes. This Concept aims to provide an overview of the progress regarding ligand-to-substrate single-electron transfer as a relatively new mode of operation to exploit ligand-centered reactivity and catalysis based thereon.

Abstract
Aerobic reaction of the ligand H2L1, 2-(2-phenylazo)-anilino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol, CoCl2·6H2O and Et3N in MeOH under refluxing conditions produces, after work-up and recrystallization, black crystals of [Co(L1)2] (1). When examined by cyclic voltammetry, 1 displays in CH2Cl2 three one-electron redox responses: two oxidative, E11/2 = 0.30 V (peak-to-peak separation, ΔEp = 100 mV) and E21/2 = 1.04 V (ΔEp = 120 mV), and one reductive E1/2 = -0.27 V (ΔEp = 120 mV) vs. SCE. Consequently, 1 is chemically oxidized by 1 equiv. of [FeIII(η5-C5H5)2][PF6], affording the isolation of deep purple crystals of [Co(L1)2][PF6]·2CH2Cl2 (2), and one-electron reduction with [CoII(η5-C5H5)2] yielded bluish-black crystals of [CoIII(η5-C5H5)2][Co(L1)2]·MeCN (3). A solid sample of 1 exhibits temperature-independent (50-300 K) magnetism, revealing the presence of a free radical (S = 1/2), which exhibits an isotropic EPR signal (g = 2.003) at 298 K and at 77 K an eight-line feature characteristic of hyperfine-interaction of the radical with the Co (I = 7/2) nucleus. Based on X-ray structural parameters of 1-3 at 100 K, magnetic and EPR spectral behaviour of 1, and variable-temperature (233-313 K) 1H NMR spectral features of 1-3 and 13C NMR spectra at 298 K of 2 and 3 in CDCl3 point to the electronic structure of the complexes as either [CoIII{(LAP)2-}{(LISQ)}˙-] or [CoIII{(L1)2}˙3-] (delocalized nature favours the latter description) (1), [CoIII{(LISQ)˙-}2][PF6]·2CH2Cl2 (2) and [CoIII(η5-C5H5)2][CoIII{(LAP)2-}2]·MeCN (3) [(LAP)2- and (LISQ)˙- represent the redox-level of coordinated ligands o-amidophenolate(2-) ion and o-iminobenzosemiquinonate(1-) π-radical ion, respectively]. Notably, all the observed redox processes are ligand-centred. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that six-coordinate complexes of a common tridentate o-aminophenolate-based ligand have been structurally characterized for the parent 1, its monocation 2 and the monoanion 3 counterparts. Temperature-dependent 1H NMR spectra reveal the existence of valence-tautomeric equilibria in 1-3. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP-level of theory corroborate the electronic structural assignment of 1-3 from experimental data. The origins of the observed UV-VIS-NIR absorptions for 1-3 have been assigned, based on time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, characterization, and electronic structure studies of a series of thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) bis-tetramethyltetraazaannulene complexes. These sandwich complexes show remarkable stability towards air and moisture, even at elevated temperatures. Electrochemical studies show the uranium complex to be stable in three different oxidation states; isolation of the oxidized species reveals a rare case of a non-innocent tetramethyltetraazaannulene (TMTAA) ligand.

Abstract
Furan and thiophene diarylmethenes are potential redox-active ligands for metal centers that could be exploited in the development of nontraditional, stoichiometric, and catalytic redox reactions. As such, we describe here the selective meso-deprotonations of dithiophene, difuran, and diimine-difuran diarylmethanes to form the π-conjugated anions, for which only the diimino-difuryl anion is truly isolable and studied by X-ray crystallography. In all cases, facile one-electron oxidation of these anions occurs, which allows the isolation of the neutral dithienyl and diimino-difuryl radicals. UV-Visible and time-dependent density functional theory studies reveal that the oxidation of the dithienyl anion to its radical is associated with an increase in the highest (singly) occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap, evident through a hypsochromic shift of the main absorption band in the electronic spectrum, whereas oxidation of the diimino-difuryl anion causes only minor spectroscopic changes. Electrochemical studies support the stability of the radicals with respect to the anion, showing strongly negative oxidation potentials. The control of the redox activity of these diarylmethene carbanions through variation of the nature of the substituents, donor-atom, and the conjugated π-system and their potential as ligands for redox-inert metal centers makes them intriguing candidates as noninnocent partners for redox reactions.

Abstract
Coordination of redox-active ligands to metals is a compelling strategy for making reduced complexes more accessible. In this work, we explore the use of redox-active formazanate ligands in low-coordinate iron chemistry. Reduction of an iron(II) precursor occurs at milder potentials than analogous non-redox-active β-diketiminate complexes, and the reduced three-coordinate formazanate-iron compound is characterized in detail. Structural, spectroscopic, and computational analysis show that the formazanate ligand undergoes reversible ligand-centered reduction to form a formazanate radical dianion in the reduced species. The less negative reduction potential of the reduced low-coordinate iron formazanate complex leads to distinctive reactivity with formation of a new N-I bond that is not seen with the β-diketiminate analogue. Thus, the storage of an electron on the supporting ligand changes the redox potential and enhances certain reactivity.

Abstract
A series of N, N'-dialkyl-β-diketiminato manganese(II) complexes was synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopy, and then assayed for volatility, thermal stability, and surface reactivity relevant to vapor-phase film growth processes. Bis( N, N'-dimethyl-4-amino-3-penten-2-imine) manganese(II), 1, and bis( N- N'-diisopropyl-4-amino-3-penten-2-imine) manganese(II), 2, specifically, emerge as the most promising candidates, balancing volatility (sublimation temperatures < 100 °C at 100 mTorr) with coordinative unsaturation and reactivity, as revealed by rapid release of ligand in the presence of a silica surface. Good correlation is observed between buried volume calculations and relative surface reactivity data, indicating that metal availability resulting from sterically open ligand alkyl substituents increases surface reactivity. The thermal stability, volatility, and reactivity exhibited by these compounds render them promising precursors for the growth of manganese oxide films via vapor-phase growth processes.

Abstract
The title complexes were isolated as structurally characterised compounds [OsII(9-OP)L2]ClO4, L = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) or 2-phenylazopyridine (pap), and were compared with ruthenium analogues. A reversible one-electron oxidation and up to three reduction processes were observed by voltammetry (CV, DPV) and spectroelectrochemistry (UV-vis-NIR, partially EPR). Supporting calculations (DFT, TD-DFT) were used to assess the oxidation state combinations of the different redox active ligands and of the metal, revealing the effects of Os versus Ru exchange and of bpy versus pap acceptor ligation. Several unexpected consequences of these variations were observed for members of the new osmium-containing redox series. Remarkably, the EPR results exhibit a clear dichotomy between the complex ion [OsIII(9-OP-)(bpy)2]2+ and the radical species [OsII(9-OP˙)(pap)2]2+, which has not been similarly observed for the analogous [RuIII(9-OP-)L2]2+ systems. This difference, unprecedented for 5dn systems, is attributed to the superior stabilisation of the OsII state by the strongly π-accepting pap ligands. The reduced forms [OsII(9-OP-)(pap˙-)(pap)] and [OsII(9-OP-)(pap˙-)2]- exhibit strong inter-ligand interactions, leading to spin isomers and electron hopping.

Abstract
Polynuclear manganese compounds have garnered interest as mimics and models of the water oxidizing complex (WOC) in photosystem II and as single molecule magnets. Molecular systems in which composition can be correlated to physical phenomena, such as magnetic exchange interactions, remain few primarily because of synthetic limitations. Here, we report the synthesis of a family of trimanganese(II) complexes of the type Mn3X3L (X = Cl-, H-, and MeO-) where L3- is a tris(β-diketiminate) cyclophane. The tri(chloride) complex (2) is structurally similar to the reported tri(bromide) complex (1) with the Mn3X3 core having a ladder-like arrangement of alternating M-X rungs, whereas the tri(μ-hydride) (3) and tri(μ-methoxide) (4) complexes contain planar hexagonal cores. The hydride and methoxide complexes are synthesized in good yield (48% and 56%) starting with the bromide complex employing a metathesis-like strategy. Compounds 2-4 were characterized by combustion analysis, X-ray crystallography, X-band EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and infrared and UV-visible spectroscopy. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that the Mn3 clusters in 2-4 are antiferromagnetically coupled, and the spin ground state of the compounds (S = 3/2 (1, 2) or S = 1/2 (3, 4)) is correlated to the identity of the bridging ligand and structural arrangement of the Mn3X3 core (X = Br, Cl, H, OCH3). Electrochemical experiments on isobutyronitrile solutions of 3 and 4 display broad irreversible oxidations centered at 0.30 V.
