Abstract
The novel dinuclear complex related to the [FeFe]-hydrogenases active site, [Fe2(μ-pdt)(κ2-dmpe)2(CO)2] (1), is highly reactive toward chlorinated compounds CHxCl4-x (x = 1, 2) affording selectively terminal or bridging chloro diiron isomers through a C-Cl bond activation. DFT calculations suggest a cooperative mechanism involving a formal concerted regioselective chloronium transfer depending on the unrotated or rotated conformation of two isomers of 1.

Abstract
A flexible macrocyclic ligand with two tridentate {CNC} compartments can host two Cu ions in reversibly interconvertible states, CuI CuI (1) and mixed-valent Cu1.5 Cu1.5 (2). They were characterized by XRD and multiple spectroscopic methods, including EPR, UV/Vis absorption and MCD, in combination with TD-DFT and CASSCF calculations. 2 features a short Cu⋅⋅⋅Cu distance (≈2.5 Å; compared to ≈4.0 Å in 1) and a very high delocalization energy of 13 000 cm-1 , comparable to the mixed-valent state of the biological CuA site. Electron self-exchange between 1 and 2 is rapid despite large structural reorganization, and is proposed to proceed via a sequential mechanism involving an active conformer of 1, viz. 1'; the latter has been characterized by XRD. Such electron transfer (ET) process is reminiscent of the conformationally gated ET proposed for biological systems. This redox couple is a unique pair of flexible dicopper complexes, achieving fast electron self-exchange closely related to the function of the CuA site.

Abstract
The reduction of a molybdenum monodithiolene complex, [Mo(CO)2(dt)(dppe)], in the presence of dichloromethane leads to the transfer of CH2 to sulfur and respective sulfonium species. Detailed analytical and mechanistical spectroscopic and electrochemical studies reveal the reasons for the unexpected formation and composition of the very unusual resultant complexes to be electronic-energetic in nature.

Abstract
With aromatic and aliphatic thiol-S donor Schiff base ligands, the copper-sulfur clusters, [(L1)8CuI6CuII2](ClO4)2·DMF·0.5CH3OH (1) and [(L2)12CuI5CuII11(μ4-S)(μ4-O)6](ClO4)·4H2O, respectively, have been reported ( Chem. Commun. 2017, 53, 3334); HL1/HL2 are 2-(((3-methylthiophen-2-yl)methylene)amino)benzene/ethanethiol). Complex 1 comprises a wheel shaped Cu8S8 framework, made up of interlinked Cu2{μ-S(R)}2 units. To understand the properties with relevance to the CuA site and to check whether self-assembly generates similar type clusters to 1, three complexes, [(L3)8CuI6CuII2](ClO4)2·(C2H5)2O·2.5H2O (2), [(L3Cl)8CuI6CuII2](ClO4)2·1.25(C2H5)2O·1.25CH3OH·2H2O (3), and [(L3CF3)8CuI6CuII2](ClO4)2·2(C2H5)2O·H2O (4) have been synthesized with supporting ligands HL3X (HL3 = 2-((furan-2-ylmethylene)amino)benzenethiol when X = -H; X = -Cl or -CF3 para to thiol-S are HL3Cl and HL3CF3 ligands, respectively). The X-ray structures of 3 and 4 feature a similar Cu8S8 architecture to 1. The spectroscopic properties and the X-ray structures revealed that 2-4 are fully spin delocalized mixed valence (MV) of class-III type clusters. The structural parameters of the N2Cu2{μ-S(R)}2 units of 3 and 4 closely resemble those of the MV binuclear CuA site. With the aid of UV-vis-NIR, EPR, and spectroelectrochemical studies, the electronic properties of these complexes have been described in comparison with the MV model complexes and CuA site.

Abstract
Large-sized coordination clusters have emerged as a new class of molecular materials in which many metal atoms and organic ligands are integrated to synergize their properties. As dynamic magnetic materials, such a combination of multiple components functioning as responsive units has many advantages over monometallic systems due to the synergy between constituent components. Understanding the nature of dynamic magnetism at an atomic level is crucial for realizing the desired properties, designing responsive molecular nanomagnets, and ultimately unlocking the full potential of these nanomagnets for practical applications. Therefore, this review article highlights the recent development of large-sized coordination clusters with dynamic magnetic properties. These dynamic properties can be associated with spin transition, electron transfer, and valence fluctuation through their switchable electronic configurations. Subsequently, the article also highlights specialized characterization techniques with different timescales for supporting switching mechanisms, chemistry, and properties. Afterward, we present an overview of coordination clusters (such as cyanide-bridged and non-cyanide assemblies) with dynamic magnetic properties, namely, spin transition and electron transfer in magnetically bistable systems and mixed-valence complexes. In particular, the response mechanisms of coordination clusters are highlighted using representative examples with similar transition principles to gain insights into spin state and mixed-valence chemistry. In conclusion, we present possible solutions to challenges related to dynamic magnetic clusters and potential opportunities for a wide range of intelligent next-generation devices.

Abstract
One-pot reaction of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN), [CuI(MeCN)4]PF6, and paraformaldehyde affords a mixed-valent [TREN4CuIICuICuI(μ3-OH)](PF6)3 complex. The macrocyclic azacryptand TREN4 contains four TREN motifs, three of which provide a bowl-shape binding pocket for the [Cu3(μ3-OH)]3+ core. The fourth TREN caps on top of the tricopper cluster to form a cryptand, imposing conformational constraints and preventing solvent interaction. Contrasting the limited redox capability of synthetic tricopper complexes reported so far, [TREN4CuIICuICuI(μ3-OH)](PF6)3 exhibits several reversible single-electron redox events. The distinct electrochemical behaviors of [TREN4CuIICuICuI(μ3-OH)](PF6)3 and its solvent-exposed analog [TREN3CuIICuIICuII(μ3-O)](PF6)4 suggest that isolation of tricopper core in a cryptand enables facile electron transfer, allowing potential application of synthetic tricopper complexes as redox catalysts. Indeed, the fully reduced [TREN4CuICuICuI(μ3-OH)](PF6)2 can reduce O2 under acidic conditions. The geometric constraints provided by the cryptand are reminiscent of Nature's multicopper oxidases (MCOs). For the first time, a synthetic tricopper cluster was isolated and fully characterized at CuICuICuI (4a), CuIICuICuI (4b), and CuIICuIICuI (4c) states, providing structural and spectroscopic models for many intermediates in MCOs. Fast electron transfer rates (105 to 106 M-1 s-1) were observed for both CuICuICuI/CuIICuICuI and CuIICuICuI/CuIICuIICuI redox couples, approaching the rapid electron transfer rates of copper sites in MCO.

Abstract
Sulfur-rich metalloproteins and metalloenzymes, containing strongly covalent metal-thiolate (cysteinate) or metal-sulfide bonds in their active site, are ubiquitous in nature. The metal-sulfur motif is a highly versatile tool involved in various biological processes: (i) metal storage, transport, and detoxification; (ii) electron transfer; (iii) activation of the sulfur atom to promote different types of S-based reactions including S-alkylation, S-oxygenation, S-nitrosylation, or disulfide or thiyl radicals formation; (iv) activation of small earth-abundant molecules (such as water, dioxygen, superoxide radical anion, carbon oxides, nitrous oxide, and dinitrogen). This Account describes our investigations carried out during the past 10 years on bio-inspired and biomimetic low-nuclearity complexes containing metal-thiolate bonds. The general objective of these structural, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and catalytic studies was to determine structure-properties-function correlations useful to (i) understanding the peculiar features or the mechanism of the mimicked natural systems and/or (ii) reproducing enzymatic reactivities for specific catalytic applications.By employing a unique highly preorganized N2S2-donor ligand with two thiolate functions, in combination with different first-row transition metals (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, or V), we got access to a series of bio-inspired sulfur-rich complexes displaying a widespread spectrum of structures, properties, and functions. We isolated a dicopper(I) complex that, for the first time, mimicked concomitantly the key structural, spectroscopic, and redox features of the biological CuA center, a highly efficient electron transfer agent involved in the respiratory enzyme cytochrome c oxidase. In the field of sulfur activation, we explored (i) sulfur methylation promoted by a Zn-dithiolate complex that mimics Zn-dependent thiolate alkylation proteins and shows different selectivity compared to the Ni and Co congeners and (ii) a series of Co, Fe, and Mn complexes as the first copper-free systems able to promote thiolate/disulfide interconversion mediated by (de)coordination of halides. Concerning metal-centered reactivity, we investigated two families of metal-thiolate catalysts for small-molecule activation, especially relevant in the fields of sustainable fuel production and energy conversion: (i) two isostructural Mn and Fe dinuclear complexes that activate and reduce dioxygen selectively, either to hydrogen peroxide or water as a function of the experimental conditions; (ii) a family of dinuclear MFe (M = Ni or Fe) hydrogenase mimics active for catalytic H2 evolution both in organic solution and on modified electrodes in water. This Account thus illustrates how the versatility of thiolate ligation can support selected functions for transition metal complexes, depending on the nature of the metal, the nuclearity of the complex, the presence and type of co-ligands, the second coordination sphere effects, and the experimental conditions.

Abstract
In our efforts to understand the nature of metal thiolates, we have explored the chemistry of cobalt ion supported by (thiolato)phosphine ligand derivatives. Herein, we synthesized and characterized a square-planar CoII complex binding with a bidentate (thiolato)phosphine ligand, Co(PS1″)2 (1) ([PS1″]- = [P(Ph)2(C6H3-3-SiMe3-2-S)]-). The complex activates O2 to form a ligand-based oxygenation product, Co(OPS1″)2 (2) ([OPS1″]- = [PO(Ph)2(C6H3-3-SiMe3-2-S)]-). In addition, an octahedral CoIII complex with a tridentate bis(thiolato)phosphine ligand, [NEt4][Co(PS2*)2] (3) ([PS2*]2- = [P(Ph)(C6H3-3-Ph-2-S)2]2-), was obtained. Compound 3 cleaves the C-Cl bond in dichloromethane via an S-based nucleophilic attack to generate a chloromethyl thioether group. Two isomeric products, [Co(PS2*)(PSSCH2Cl*)] (4 and 4') ([PSSCH2Cl*]- = [P(Ph)(C6H3-3-Ph-2-S)(C6H3-3-Ph-2-SCH2Cl)]-), were isolated and fully characterized. Both transformations, oxygenation of a CoII-bound phosphine donor in 1 and alkylation of a CoIII-bound thiolate in 3, were monitored by spectroscopic methods. These reaction products were isolated and fully characterized. Density functional theory (DFT, the B3LYP functional) calculations were performed to understand the electronic structure of 1 as well as the pathway of its transformation to 2.

Abstract
The synthesis of atom-precise analogues of homometallic nanoclusters remains a great challenge. Herein we report the first pair of atom-precise copper/silver-thiolate halide cluster analogues, namely [Cu17/Ag17I3S(C2B10H10S2)6(CH3CN)11] (Cu17 and Ag17), obtained by bottom-up self-assembly and complete-metal-exchange-induced cluster-to-cluster transformation, respectively. The differences in optical absorption and emission of these analogues were fully elucidated by experimental and theoretical methods.

Abstract
Here we report the spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization of three novel chimeric CuA proteins in which either one or the three loops surrounding the metal ions in the Thermus thermophilus protein have been replaced by homologous human and plant sequences while preserving the set of coordinating amino acids. These conservative modifications mimic basic differences between CuA sites from different organisms and allow for fine tuning the energy gap between alternative electronic ground states of CuA.. This results in a systematic modulation of thermodynamic and kinetic electron transfer (ET) parameters and in the selection of one of two possible redox-active molecular orbitals, which differ in the ET reorganization energy by a factor of 2. Moreover, the ET mechanism is found to be frictionally controlled, and the modifications introduced into the different chimeras do not affect the frictional activation parameter.

Abstract
CuA is a binuclear copper site acting as electron entry port in terminal heme-copper oxidases. In the oxidized form, CuA is a mixed valence pair whose electronic structure can be described using a potential energy surface with two minima, σu* and πu, that are variably populated at room temperature. We report that mutations in the first and second coordination spheres of the binuclear metallocofactor can be combined in an additive manner to tune the energy gap and, thus, the relative populations of the two lowest-lying states. A series of designed mutants span σu*/πu energy gaps ranging from 900 to 13 cm-1. The smallest gap corresponds to a variant with an effectively degenerate ground state. All engineered sites preserve the mixed-valence character of this metal center and the electron transfer functionality. An increase of the Cu-Cu distance less than 0.06 Å modifies the σu*/πu energy gap by almost 2 orders of magnitude, with longer distances eliciting a larger population of the πu state. This scenario offers a stark contrast to synthetic systems, as model compounds require a lengthening of 0.5 Å in the Cu-Cu distance to stabilize the πu state. These findings show that the tight control of the protein environment allows drastic perturbations in the electronic structure of CuA sites with minor geometric changes.

Abstract
Reduction of a thiolate-bridged FeIIFeIII complex leads to the cleavage of an Fe-S bond by the insertion of the methylene unit from CH2Cl2 to give a neutral FeIIFeIII complex with a novel Fe-CH2-S fragment. The structural and electrochemical differences of the alkylated and the non-alkylated Fe2S2 complexes are also examined.

Abstract
The hexanuclear thioguanidine mixed-valent copper complex cation [Cu6 (NGuaS)6 ]+2 (NGuaS = o-SC6 H4 NC(NMe2 )2 ) and its oxidized/reduced states are theoretically analyzed by means of density functional theory (DFT) (TPSSh + D3BJ/def2-TZV (p)). A detailed bonding analysis using overlap populations is performed. We find that a delocalized Cu-based ring orbital serves as an acceptor for donated S p electrons. The formed fully delocalized orbitals give rise to a confined electron cloud within the Cu6 S6 cage which becomes larger on reduction. The resulting strong electrostatic repulsion might prevent the fully reduced state. Experimental UV/Vis spectra are explained using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and analyzed with a natural transition orbital analysis. The spectra are dominated by MLCTs within the Cu6 S6 core over a wide range but LMCTs are also found. The experimental redshift of the reduced low energy absorption band can be explained by the clustering of the frontier orbitals. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations are presented for the dicopper thiolate complex Cu2 (NGuaS)2 Cl2 [NGuaS=2-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidino) benzenethiolate] with a special focus on the bonding mechanism of the Cu2 S2 Cl2 core and the spectroscopic response. This complex is relevant for the understanding of dicopper redox centers, for example, the CuA center. Its UV/Vis absorption is theoretically studied and found to be similar to other structural CuA models. The spectrum can be roughly divided in the known regions of metal d-d absorptions and metal to ligand charge transfer regions. Nevertheless the chloride ions play an important role as electron donors, with the thiolate groups as electron acceptors. The bonding mechanism is dissected by means of charge decomposition analysis which reveals the large covalency of the Cu2 S2 diamond core mediated between Cu dz2 and S-S π and π* orbitals forming Cu-S σ bonds. Measured resonant Raman spectra are shown for 360- and 720-nm excitation wavelength and interpreted using the calculated vibrational eigenmodes and frequencies. The calculations help to rationalize the varying resonant behavior at different optical excitations. Especially the phenylene rings are only resonant for 720 nm. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
The redox equilibrium between dinuclear Cu(II) μ-thiolate and Cu(I) disulfide structures has been analyzed experimentally and via DFT calculations. Two new ligands, L(2)SSL(2) and L(4)SSL(4), and their Cu(II) μ-thiolate and Cu(I) disulfide complexes were synthesized. For L(2)SSL(2), these two redox-isomeric copper species are shown to be in equilibrium, which depends on both temperature and solvent. For L(4)SSL(4) the μ-thiolate species forms as the kinetic product and further evolves into the disulfide complex under thermodynamic control, which creates the unprecedented possibility to compare both species under the same reaction conditions. The energies of the μ-thiolate and disulfide complexes for two series of related ligands have been calculated with DFT; the results rationalize the experimentally observed structures, and emphasize the important role that steric requirements play in the formation of the Cu(II) thiolate structure.
